Also Bioshock 1 is decent but there are better shooters out there if you are just looking to frag things.

    Namely Borderlands. Or Killzone 2.

What about Resistance?!? Or better yet, Resistance 2?

Heavy Rain is intriguing, although it does sort of seem like an interactive movie. Do you have any real control of the events or are you just along for the ride? In ther words do your actions in the game effect the outcome of the story?

Both. The game itself is mostly quick time events and dialog with some exploring/investigating sprinkled in.

But your decisions definitely affect the events in the game to significant degrees.

    Right on.

I'd be careful with Heavy Rain. It's gained decent reviews from some websites, but the writing is awful and the voice acting is atrocious.
It's pretty much a bad horror movie (Saw) meets a good thriller (Se7en), except the good things about Se7en (the direction, acting, filmmaking) were replaced wholesale. The real problem I had with it though, is that Heavy Rain takes itself very seriously, and though it touches on topics like divorce, drug use, and murder, and isolation, it has very little to say on those topics.

I would go for Uncharted 2. Uncharted wasn't there yet, but I loved Uncharted 2. That, or Demon's Souls. Ideally, I would get both, and if you find Demon's Souls frustrating, switch over to Uncharted 2.

Tidus was actually a pretty upbeat character, though I guess there was a lot of "dad why were you so mean to me :(("

I personally enjoyed FFXIII, but don't put your expectations very high. It's very linear and as far as the story and characters go, your mileage may vary. If you want a game to show off how pretty the PS3 can be, though, it's one of the better choices along with Uncharted.

But if you like RPGs, I'll second Resonance of Fate. It's.. very odd, though.

You keep not mentioning Uncharted in your responses OP, is there a reason?

There is no good reason, I just don't know much about it. From what ive seen it looks like an indiana jones/tomb raider adventure/puzzle game. But I could be wrong. I've never been onto those types of games but I'm willing to give it a try.

Definitely try it. I never thought I would like it and it's awesome.

It's like when you see a movie and you're not a fan of the genre, but it's a truly amazing movie so it's still a great experience. The games are just so polished and well put together, and the direction and story are in a class of their own.

    Must Play:
    Demon's Souls
Demon's Souls (seriously get this fucking game)
    Infamous
God of War Collection (if you have not played the first two games)
    God of War III
    Darksiders
    Heavenly Sword
    Arkham Asylum

    Little Big Planet 2
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction/Crack in Time
    Dead Space 1/2
Katamari Forever (if you have not played the Katamari series)
Dragon Age (would recommend you play it on a PC if you have one that can run it)
    Uncharted 1/2
    Mirror's Edge
Fallout 3 or New Vegas (Not bad on the console if you haven't already played them on PC)

Everything else has already been mentioned so I'll throw something new into the mix. If you like 3D platformers and sneaky gameplay that doesn't throw a game over when you get detected the Sly Collection is pretty great, and it's a ton of gameplay for the price since you get 3 games for, I think, $40.

I would just go and download the demo before you buy it. Demos exist for a reason.

And I bought Uncharted and didn't care for it at all. And neither did my friend. So it's not like everyone is guaranteed to like it.

Personally I think the 2 exclusives I've got the most bang for my buck with is Metal Gear Solid 4 and Infamous. I played through both games more than twice, and MGS4 has a fun little multiplayer component. Infamous also has a demo so you can try it out before you buy it.

Demon's Souls is awesome. Just such an original game.

Batman Arkham Asylum is pretty much the best Superhero game ever.

Although it is true, Batman Arkham Asylum IS the best Superhero game ever. No question there.

I didn't realize how many great exclusives I actually owned:

Uncharted 2 (Uncharted 1) - I like 1's story so much better, but 2 is an all around better game - I would play them in order (1 then 2)
Demon's Soul - It's make you cry toss controllers hard but wow it's rewarding to beat that first boss.
Valkyria Chronicles - Some people on here apparently hate this game others say it's one of the best games ever. I will say for a game with over 30 characters you control I never have been so attached to each and every single one of them. LOVE this game.
Little Big Planet 2 - 1 was ok, but seriously better off just getting 2
Heavy Rain - You have to be in the mood for this one, I made it about 1/2 through one playthru then dropped the mood. I fully intended to do it over - this time with the Move!

    *Update*
I just purchased my ps3 and the game I bought was...... Killzone 3! It actually was a bundle so I didn't actually choose it. It wasent my first choice but it looks cool so I'll give it a shot. The next game I'm going to get is either Mass Effect 2 or Infamous. Still not sure which. Thanks for all the advice everyone :)

Be warned that Uncharted 1 has far more frustrating combat and poorly designed sections than 2, so even if you find yourself hating 1 you might still like 2. I know I did!

Edit: Also, it worth metioning that Uncharted 1 makes the PS3 Slims really, really irritatingly noisy since there's no install option and it constantly reads from the louder, cheaper blu ray drive. Really, you might just want to skip 1 and get 2.

I would really suggest renting FFXIII instead of buying it. I know, subjective opinion and all, but general opinion is...poor. I found it to be staggeringly bad.
On another point, I disliked Uncharted 1 and absolutely *loved* 2.
Oh man, and bulletstorm, while not exclusive, it tons o' fun. Definitely a renter, though.

And sorry if you've mentioned this, but have you played Mass Effect 1 at all? The games are quite story intensive, and if you care for that sort of thing, you may want to see if you can track down 1 for the PC.

Gran Turismo 5. I just love that game. Fun to race, online is solid, a bit of a grind (much less so than when it came out), but overall a great experience if you like sim racing games.

After that, I'd say Uncharted 2.

Mass Effect 2 has been pretty great. RPG elements are light, but mostly improved from 1 from what I've read. I did the D/L, and it's noticeably quieter and cooler than running a disc. Game play still stutters a little and load times don't seem improved, unless they're even worse on the disc version.

Don't buy any games - get a GameFly subscription and for about $19/month (or the cost of one used game) you can try all the stuff that's ever been released on the PS3

since i got GameFly i've only bought the big games that i knew i'd play continuously for a long time like Fallout 3 New Vegas, etc.

I've thought about it but I don't have a lot of time to play games so I figure I'll just buy the games I'm confident I'll like as opposed to renting a new one every week. That way I can invest my time into high quality titles.

I would echo the suggestions on Demon's Souls as your first game for the main reason that in addition to being one of the truly unique exclusives the servers will be getting turned off sometime this month.

It may not sound like much, but the interactions with other players via bloodstains and (you see the last few seconds of their lives) messages. (Players can leave messages for one another on how to tackle enemies or find hidden passages and items)

Then you can actually join peoples games if you die as a blue phantom, aiding them in completing the level and if they manage to kill the boss you regain your body. Or you can summon them in reverse. Players can also invade your world and attempt to kill you to regain their body, or vice versa.

While you can play it offline, it'd be a shame to play such a great game without experiencing that side of it.
