Does it really matter if people know what the number is? I'm not seeing why blacking it out is important here.
Then don't do it. Problem solved!

but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.
Each and every PAX badge now has a unique number on it.

Just judging from the numbers I think it's sequential. ~30000 passes sounds about correct. I was following suit with others out of curiosity what numbers do people have. for now don't post your numbers just the first 2 digits and the rest * out. So mine is 31***
another neat detail that no one's mentioned yet: all the helpful info on the back! official pax twitters, show hours, basic rules, a brief guide to the convention center, and hotel shuttle hours are all printed on the back of the badges. so convenient!
I was just about to post something about the new and improved back. It's nice they added more info for people who may not follow this stuff as closely as us.
...so yeah, I got my badge today too! I'm sure the numbers have some meaning, the obvious answer being anti-counterfeit measures. If anyone is suspected of having a fake badge, it could make it much easier to identify by having unique numbers.

It's mostly the same as last year.
the thing that get's me is they changed "don't spray paint or put stickers on stuff" to "don't vandalize anything". That's not a very PAXish change.

Or they could just be messing with us.
That would work if they aren't sequential. If they are you could just use #11111.
Got my 3 day badge today as well. Had a thought about the numbers. What if they are for a raffle or lottery of some sort? I doubt this is true, but how great would it be to find out you have VIP seating to a concert, or maybe early access to the show floor? Just a thought.
Without being too crazy or expensive, what would you want to win?

A lock of Jerry's hair.
(For reference, my number starts with 30. So... so far, no one has had a number less than 30k. It may not be sequential.... The number may mean something... like, if it starts with a 3 or a 4, it's a Three Day Pass, etc. Could be an anti-counterfeit measure, like a checksum.)

That guy with the ridiculously long scarf at PAX. Say Hi!

I am so excited but how am I suppose to wear it around my neck?
Per the registration page.
Badges will be mailed out to the US ONLY (A FedEx Option is available for those outside the US) approximately two weeks before PAX -- you'll receive your lanyard at the show.

LIES LIES LIES, it'll hover around your neck telepathically upon your entrance to the convention. The badge is infused with enough energy to last the weekend, note that 10 nuclear reactors exploded around the US in the making of these badges.

If you look closely, the slot in the pass is just wide enough to accommodate a roofing nail. They expect you to nail it to your chest, about an inch below the suprasternal notch and into the manubrium.

I was worried that there may be issues with the said badge deliveries. Here's a quick snip of my conversation with Interactive Ticketing. I modified this to make it shorter and took out personal info. Grain of salt for interpretation, but I think it's clear enough:
Question:
I live outside the US and ordered my PAX East tickets a little while ago. I chose the option to have them shipped with FedEx, but since then I ran into issues with FedEx and I'm concerned about not receiving the tickets.
I was wondering, should I never receive the badges through the mail, can I still pick up badges at the will call line by showing my printed tickets? If not, I what are my options and how can I guarante my entry to the convention knowing that I did buy the tickets?
For example, what happens to someone who had the badges shipped but lost them before the event?
Answer:
If you do not receive your badges via FexEx, simple bring your printed confirmation (ticket) with you and you will be able to register on-site and receive your badge there.
The same would apply if you received your badges and lost them before the event.
I hope if they fail to deliver them, you would get reimbursed. The international FedEx price was around $20!
True, I would hope so, but their service was quite iffy and I have no trust in them at this point.
I'll be honest. The charge is the last thing on my mind right now All I want to do is make sure I can get in the event at this point. I would hate to see all the traveling, investment, preperation and anticipatoin go to waste because I hit a closed door due to a silly administrative problem. I'll try to handle FedEx later (should they fail to provide and if I feel up to it during my post-pax depression).

I wouldn't worry too much. As long as you have the printed confirmation they'll figure something out, and nobody at PAX wants to have somebody's entire trip ruined due to a minor issue.
In other news, my 3-day badges are 436xx… I could see there being 10,000 each of the 1-day badges, and then 20K - 30K of the 3-days. Just a theory though.
Did you apply for Media this PAX as well (I see the Prime Media badge)? I know we get them at will-call if we are getting any. I purchased my 3-Day ahead just in case, both then and now.

Or, if it's like that Trailer for RIFT, it will hover above your hand for a few seconds before flying off towards a tear in the sky, causing said tear to look... representative of something.

The badge also will turn into a floating question mark wherein you'll have to give 10,000 quests and give away 24 gold each, once completed you'll gain 1 pokeball per successful quest to use in the Pokemon Safari.
