Actually, babies regulate their breathing to their parents so being close to them reduces the risk of SIDS. As long as you are responsible, it can be a really great experience/bonding time. I sleep great because I know my baby is okay. Obviously, keep blankets folded at waist level or below, watch pillow placement- either none, or have it configured that the baby is not near them, bed is flush against wall if the baby isn't between the parents, don't drink or take benadryl (anything that affects your alertness), etc. I don't know if it is a mama thing but I am very aware of Henry and if he wakes, I am up before he cries because his breathing changes and I am awake. As far as him wanting to stay with us, I'm in no hurry. He is 6 months old. He doesn't have to be independent just yet. I am fine with him needing us.
I'm not trying to tell anyone the right way to be a parent, but the problem comes when you are ready for the baby to sleep in their own room but they won't because they're so used to sleeping next to someone. It's even worse when they are able to get up and just won't stay in their room no matter what you do. If you're fine with your kids always being in your bed, by all means. It's just something to think about. And it's all anecdotal, of course. Your kids could switch with no problems at all, but I've just heard a lot of the opposite and the parents regretting it. We personally kept our son in a bassinet in our room until he was about 6 months old, when we started putting him in his crib.
Yeah! Some kids just have a problem getting/staying asleep but I have known kids who slept with their parents and others who were always in their own bed and some of them had the issue and others did not. I just think it is good to be well informed. Cosleeping can be a great and safe option but 6 months is hardly "always". Also, so much of our culture is about this idea to keep parents from being inconvenienced, often at the expense of the child. I think it is okay for a parent to have some difficult times. Babies are so new to the world and it is natural for me to be near mine. People should do what is best for their family but there is certainly no one perfect way.
Babies are just crazy. My daughter was doing the newborn-eat-every-two-hours thing, then she started sleeping from 9 at night until around 5, now she's back to up and down constantly. And she's only three months old. I know any given thing isn't likely to last but it sucks that they all involve either interrupted sleep or bodily fluids or both.

If this is a brand new thing and hasn't been going on very long, she might just be teething.

Teething is sad times. Our baby has two teeth, both in the past week and three more are nearly poking out. It blows my mind how quickly he is growing and what a difference a couple of weeks can make. He is nearly crawling and I am scrambling to baby proof this place!

Our son teethed for probably a good year. It was horrible. I do not envy you guys.

You shut your dirty mouth because it is too early and that cannot be happening

Hopefully it's not since she is only 3 months old. Although wikipedia says it can happen that early. Frankly, the earlier the better in my opinion. The sooner it starts, the sooner it's over and you can hopefully get some more sleep.

Henry started teething around 3.5 months and only just now (6 months) has the teeth to show for it. Is your baby drooling a lot? Chewing on everything? Red cheeks? Maybe even a slight fever? It can be pretty rough.

Teething is a long process. Maybe some kids get used to it so it doesn't bother them when they are older, but some of the last teeth are the worst. The canines can be especially bad since they are wedge shaped and keep cutting and cutting until they are in all of the way.

Goddammit you let me have my denial!
But yeah. Red cheeks, constantly chewing on fingers. They say it can be preparation for teething so I guess we'll see. I get a night off tonight and man I'm going to sleep for at least six hours straight. I'm not sure I remember how.
My son teethed for a long time but only the first two caused him much trouble. After that he would just get s snuffy nose and be a little more miserable but he didn't scream or have trouble sleeping.
His older sisters on the other hand; they couldn't sleep and we had to give them children's tylenol for them to have any reprieve.
We just found out the daycare that said they had a spot for us in September 2012 meant oops 2013.
This is an issue.
Wow! That is definitely booking it in advance.
That's how it is all over this city. Daycares are so full people book a spot when they start to think about having a baby because the waiting list is sometimes up to 5 goddamn years. 2013 may be our best option still.

That's crazy talk, we got mad when we heard some places around here were on lists of 5 or 6 months. I can't imagine having to wait years.
That aside, I've been watching in awe of my friends raise their kid. He is 6 or 7 months old now and is huge! I got him a duck pillow plush a while back that he seems to like well enough.
It's been interesting hearing the tales of raising this kid.
I guess they accidentally starved him during his first few days. Yes, accidentally. When they first brought him home, they were feeding him 8oz every X hours (I don't recall what X was, but just use your imagination). Why only 8? Because the nurse told them to give him no more than that before they left the hospital. They ended up going back 2 days later because he wouldn't stop crying. My friends were pretty upset when they found out why...
Until you get in the daycare, just use a box and some duct tape. Maybe punch some holes in the box. That's what I do when I get stuck babysitting the nieces and nephews. I get sleep, they get.. quiet time. It's all good.

ugh, teething. keep those frozen nibblers handy! or a couple washcloths.
and it may be rough, but try a lactose-free formula if you're not still breastfeeding. if you are breastfeeding, look at momma's diet. several factors can contribute. better yet, talk to your pediatrician. should always be the first step.

The good news is we live 4 blocks from her retired parents and 4 blocks from my not-retired-but-able-to-work-from-home-a-few-days-per-week parents, and that the bulk of my time is not spent working as much as it is spent at school, which, being an astronomy degree, does not take place primarily during the standard 9-5. I'm confident we can work it out.
Plus July this year to July next year my wife is on maternity leave from her government job.
Plus the world ends december 2012 anyways, so that's only like 6 months of stopgap daycare.

I just put the mail on my wife's desk, which was all junk. My 2 year old son went over there and then went running off with the Victoria's Secret ad in his hands.
That's my boy.

At 3. There is such a big difference between a 2 year old and a 28 month old. It's not fair to call him 2.

My first one is due August 19th. The fact that it is literally going to be born on the busiest week of the year (the week before school starts; I'm a teacher) is, to my mind, ironclad proof that it's mine. :-)
It hit me the other day that if my kid waits as long as I did before it has children, I'll be 70 before I'm a grandpa. I was suddenly very mad at myself. Then weirded out.
Lest you guys think I only come into this thread to complain about my daughter, I would like you all to know that she's awesome and loves Lady Gaga. Like to an uholy degree, no matter how hard she's crying or what her problem is, if we turn on Bad Romance or Just Dance and bounce with her she calms right down until the song's over. It's aces if we're trying to warm an unexpected bottle.

I'm having a son and my girlfriend just hit 9 months on the 20th, so this kid could be here any day now.
Aw, congrats! Ours was a couple of weeks late and it was nerve wracking. I kept thinking it was time, yay false labor, but it never was. I hope everything goes smoothly and that you are holding your baby soon!!
If you don't have anything wrong with you you could sell your eggs for some real cash money. It's an ordeal to get approved but it's like a couple thousand bucks.
