Yoshi's Island: Best "Mario" Platformer?
I never played the game as a child, unfortunately, but I did see a copy at my local Gamedude the other day. Was thinking of picking it up. I've seen more love on the internet for this game than I had with people I've met in real life, so I gotta ask. Would many of you agree that it's the best Mario platformer?
It is, hands down, the best platformer ever. The GBA remake adds 8 extra levels, which are somewhat contrived in my opinion. But the normal levels and the urge to 100% them are perfection. I really wish this game didn't come out so late in the SNES's life, it never got the recognition it deserved.

Yoshi's Island: Best "Mario" Platformer?
Yes.
However, it's not really anything like a regular Mario game, at all, so I can see people liking Mario 3 or World more just because they like the standard Mario formula better.

According to Wikipedia it sold almost 2 million in Japan alone, and lots of people consider it, like you and me, to be the best platformer ever.
Took a while for me to like the game because of how it worked, but I do really like it now. As for best platformer ever, ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I don't know. Kirby Superstar still feels like my gut feeling on that.
it's good, definitely good, I like it more than SMWorld, but I wouldn't put it above Mario 3. I hated that fucking baby.
Then again the fact that I played through the whole game even dealing with that baby says a lot.
So maybe I need to play it again and get back to you.
I've heard complaints about the baby crying, but honestly there's not a lot of it if you bust your ass to retrieve him. It really makes the situation urgent and is one of the neatest ideas for a health meter I've ever seen.

that's probably why I actually got through the game. it's just I hate that urgent feeling, like when you almost suffocate in water levels.
Actually, I agree with this. I prefer SMB3 and SMW.
Yoshi's Island probably has more longevity, due to the challenge of getting 100% on each level, but I just don't find it as fun. It seems slower to me, and I prefer the more traditional Mario gameplay and art-style.
It is still in my top twenty games of all time, and it is definitely worth grabbing. Just realize that the "Best Platformer Ever" hype is subjective.
I'd like to add that the control is hard to adjust to, but once you do it's beautiful. Getting 100% on World 2's Extra level is a testament to this. You have to be PRECISE, and the controls are flawless. It's my favorite side scroller level ever, and although I despise auto-scrolling levels, it's like an auto-scrolling level on crack.

I do remember there was this one occasion many years ago I briefly played the game at Toys R Us, and was a bit put off because I thought the controls were somewhat complicated.
YI:DS was a little dissapointing, partly because it has so much to live up to, but mostly because all the new sprites were awful and it has some pretty bad level design in places.
It's a good platformer, yeah. But best platformer ever made?
Nope. There are a lot of really, really good platformers out there.
I'd like to hear about them. Can you name some? I think the physics in this game are way more complex than any Sonic game. I was always curious if there was any leaked screenshots of the game before Miyamoto was told to "DKC" the game, or any pre-release shots of areas that are much different than the final version.
I really like Yoshi's Island, a lot. But I'm hesitant to call it the best platformer because I don't feel like it has as much staying power. I get sick of it more easily than a Mario game.

It is the best 2D platformer ever made.

I like the sequel for the DS more actually, the babies add some variety and the boss battles are a lot more interesting.
AAA+++ game.
If you get hit Baby Mario flys off Yoshi.
A timer begins counting down. How much time you have is dependent on how many stars you've collected, but it's never less then ten seconds.

I'm calling it now.
Because it's the goddamned truth.
I am stuck on a boss in Contact, so i usually play YI alot. It is fun.
FUN.

Well, I'd imagine it'll be quite a challenge to beat SM3, World and Sonic 3.
Personally, I prefer basically the whole Mario series of platformers to Yoshi's Island.
Can't comment on YI. Never played it.
All that garbage goes out the door when you feel the squishy and jiggly bosses or blobs of flan (perhaps tofu) in the game.
