And on the note of digital, back at the beginning of the New 52, John Rood said digital sales were roughly 10 percent of print sales.
Is this like for the first month of the new 52 or pre-New 52 sales?
Either way I would think they have increased what with Marvel moving towards it and giving free codes to get people into buying digital.
Having switched myself it is waaaaay more convenient and easy.
Since switching to digital a couple weeks back, I have spent more money on comics (even comics I would never usually buy) in that time than in a couple of months of going to the store.
it is way easier to go "Oh wow they have that series up? Imma buy a few issues" and before you know it you have spent 50 dollars and have the first 4 issues of Gambit and the X-Ternals

it is a dark place to be
I'm pretty sure I am closer to the bottom than the surface, maybe if I just buy more I'll break through the other side? Negative money is still money right?

Anyway whenever I get my student loan Amazon gets a reasonable percentage of it in return for comics. The fact that they are right there, and I don't even need to get out of bed to order them makes me very weak to temptation.
Like, I just ordered the All-New Atom, Blue Beetle and Booster Gold trades that I can't find here from America. And it cost me loads (postage mostly), but it's just numbers on the screen, so away it goes.
I'm finishing The Boys last arc in digital format. Might finish Scalped the same way but for some reason comiXology only has up to issue 51 and I think issue 55 was released a month ago.
Alan Moore is doing a Gentlemen spinoff called Nemo: Heart of Ice which sounds like it's going to be Captain Nemo at the Mountains of Madness
that sounds incredible but i can't stop thinking about what happened the last time Moore did Lovecraft
whatever happened to the Century? I have one volume, sort of a graphic novella, and I bought that years ago.
Part 2 came out not terribly long ago. Part 3 is supposed to hit in early summer (in the same interview, Moore said it was done and off to the printer), and then this new one hits near Christmas.

January Sales Estimates. Not that great, because while the top 3 are over 100k, the bottom of the top 10 continues to erode. Aquaman #5 would have been in the 15th spot the month prior. Top 10:
1 JUSTICE LEAGUE #5 138,576
2 BATMAN #5 130,492
3 ACTION COMICS #5 105,088
4 DETECTIVE COMICS #5 99,342
5 GREEN LANTERN #5 97,878
6 BATMAN THE DARK KNIGHT #5 76,824
7 SUPERMAN #5 73,719
8 FLASH #5 71,611
9 BATMAN AND ROBIN #5 65,507
10 AQUAMAN #5 65,094
X-Sanction #2 sold 58k, which was more like a 40% drop, Defenders #2 sold 39k which is more like a 55-60% drop.
Scarlet Spider #1 did 53k, although with the drops like the above that might show the spider-brand needs to stay relatively small.
Good chance Shade won't finish with 12 issues, as #4 sold 17, 512.
Blackhawks #5 is the lowest of the DC 52, selling 12,267.
Wonder what all these Marvel numbers would look like if those books cost $3 instead of $4. I guess they know what they’re doing but it seems to me like they’d be making more money by dropping back to the old price point.

Defenders dropping off does not surprise me in the slightest
Not counting the six DC books that are already being canceled, the lowest six are:
Captain Atom, Voodoo, Blue Beetle, Grifter, Resurrection Man, and I, Vampire.
We've already heard (though I can't remember where) that there will most likely be another wave of cancellations, so I guess if it's another group of six, these will be the next to go?
I gotta say, I am much more emotionally invested in this group than the first one, so I hope that's not the case.
Yeah but Defenders also stars Namor, Iron Fist, Doctor Strange and Red She-Hulk
that isn't exactly an all-star cast
It's not about setting the roof on fire with sales, it's about comparative trends; it's not so much where you start out but where it goes afterwards and making the sinking boat float a little longer. It has nothing to do with the cast in that sense, as I think the A-list creative team somewhat balances off a bunch of B-listers, as this is essentially what Marvel did with Daredevil months prior. Defenders has basically lost in the second issue what you usually lose by issue #3, that's just not a good sign for any book.
I can only wonder what the Greg Land issue of Avenging Spidey will look like after everyone leaves with Madueria.
Defenders was inflated from the start, as Marvel shipped retailers a bonus 50% of whatever they ordered, for free. I know they did the same thing with the Point One special, and I believe The Incredible Hulk as well, though I'm less sure of that.
If you've noticed your local shop discounting those issues, that's why. They get a bunch of free ones so that they can sell them at a discount, and make up the cost, both by selling a larger amount than they might normally, and by hooking a lot of people into buying the ongoing series.
I suspect they did the same thing with Deadpool #49, as that book sold an extra 20-25k copies above its normal level.

.....my shop didn't sell Defenders #1 for cheap, grumble grumble  They did for Point One only because that was a well publicized thing on the internet.
edit: David Gabriel says in this interview overship sales aren't counted by Diamond, don't know if it's specifically sales and dollar or just dollar though.
If that's true, it has to be a dollar share thing, just based on the Deadpool sales I cited. There's no way in Hell that retailers ordered an extra 24,114 copies of the last issue in a story arc, just because the book's leading up to the character's "death."
And yeah, my shop didn't sell Defenders at a discount either, or I might have bought it. They did sell Incredible Hulk #1 for $2, and Point One for $3.

I have to disagree
a good portion of readers buy characters over creators. It shouldn't be like that, but it is. People will always buy Spider-Man books or Batman books because they are Spider-Man and Batman.
Daredevil has both a long pedigree of fantastic stories and universal critical acclaim working for it, while Defenders has Fraction's recent iffy record and a B-List cast.

"Ride or Die" confirmed Dominic Toretto, as they took off to find the Dragon Balls in hopes of reviving their friend Sonic

Of course, most of the Marvel books I read are around the same level.

It is one of my favourite new DC books
The speculation market is still alive and well, it seems
These are the other drops from bigger name Marvel books in the past year:
Uncanny X-Men
11/11 #1 - 109,911 (+82.5%)
11/11 #2 - 72,485 (-34.1%)
12/11 #3 - 64,112 (-11.6%)
Wolverine and the X-Men
10/11 #1 - 99,611
11/11 #2 - 83,356 (-16.3%)
12/11 #3 - 58,438 (-29.9%)
Avenging Spider-Man
11/11 #1 - 112,153
12/11 #2 - 60,682 (-45.9%)
Incredible Hulk
10/11 #1 - 106,472 (+178.6%)
11/11 #2 - 80,143 ( -24.7%)
12/11 #3 - 46,446 ( -42.0%)
Daredevil
07/11 #1 - 64,866 (+147.8%)
08/11 #2 - 40,990 ( -36.8%)
09/11 #3 - 39,477 ( -3.7%)
09/11 #4 - 40,311 ( +2.1%)
10/11 #5 - 39,413 ( -2.2%)
11/11 #6 - 38,302 ( -2.8%)
12/11 #7 - 38,824 ( +1.4%)
Avengers X-Sanction
12/11 #1 of 4 - 93,380
1/12 #2 of 4 - 58,578 (-37%)
Defenders
12/11 #1 - 85,969
1/12 #2 - 38,935 (-55%)
The only other book that is comparable is Avenging Spider-Man for a second issue drop. (Good for Daredevil being so solid)
that isn't exactly an all-star cast

It will in all liklihood hang around at least 30k. After all, the Defenders is a classic name.
Also while we are being depressing about sales stats there was actually a rise in comic sales last year and one is predicted this year too
So it aint all bad
I just think expecting it to perform like Uncanny or a Spider-Man book isn't what you should be doing
Oh man, there's gonna be a Land issue of Avenging? I've stuck out some terrible stuff in Spidey, but man!
On the flipside - JJJ's O-face!
( Ron Jeremy as JJJ porn tracings!)
so it will be worth it
The trick is going to see if he comes back for another 3ish issue arc like they said he would.
