Sigilyph is probably, no joke, the best pokemon you can use ingame. It has Magic Guard, a good stat layout, good level up moves and movepool diversity, and because of the type layout can solo half the gyms and 3/4ths of the Elite Four. Fly is such a waste on it.

well, I can breed a decent one later, but I really had no intention of ever using it.

Sawk, Whirlipede, Boldore, and Herpaderp have made the first few gyms a cakewalk. Dewott has prroven himself to be too damn fragile for most serious encounters, and Pansear is just a head-scratcher as to his utility.

I dunno, I've been having quite an easy time with just Pansear and Dewott. I've been leveling a Swadloon alongside them just to have a good grass / bug in my party. The key to Dewott is to realize he's basically a glass cannon. Put the item you get from the second gym's city on him that increases the damage of water powers and he does enough damage to kill most things outright.

I just stuck Rock Smash on Pansear, and his Dark and Fire abilities have been taking care of the rest.

I agree with this. Psybeam and Air Cutter have great type coverage together for the first few levels until you get Air Slash and Psychic. My Modest Sigilyph is killing things 5-10 levels higher with relative ease.

No, Magic Guard is the "Unaffected by any damage that doesn't directly come from opponent's moves". So no burn, no weather no poison damage. But, it still has the other effects like taking the attack penalty from burn and such. Gets really mean when you slap a life orb on, 1.3X damage for no cost.

Played for a bit today. At the second Gym, haven't tried it yet.

My team is Dewott, Pidove, Munna, Roggenrola, Pansear and Purrloin, although Dweott is the only one I've really worked on. I have Audino, Woobat, Lillipup and Blitzle in the box. Need to go back to the cave I found Roggenrola in (Wellspring I think) and look for a special patch.

    Thoughts:

    Dewott is a goddamned BEAST.
Pidove only exists cause I know I'll need a fly HM slave eventually.
Munna doesn't seem that useful, will replace when available.
Rogennrola is pretty cool, might keep him going.
Pansear is rapidly, RAPIDLY falling behind in terms of power.
Purrloin is almost worthless. He has cut, however, so...

Audino is completely worthless. I wish I had saved the ball and just ganked her for XP.
Lillipup might get pickup, so I'll have to take a closer look.
Blitzle I haven't touched at all. I hear it's not bad.

    Also: No bug types? Really?

I'm in Black as of right now.

Man, I'm dumping Purrloin like right now. It hasn't learned a single decent move so far, and after looking at it and its evolution's movepool, it doesn't look like it's gonna get much better. I was gonna wait until it evolved to at least get the evo's Dex entry, but this things so fragile I don't even want to try to get five more levels on it.

With him gone, my team currently consists of Servine, Tympole, Sawk, and Blitzle. Now to find a replacement.

Playing Black has reminded me of what a pain it can be trying to level multiple Pokemon.

All the ones I want to add to my team don't come until later, so right now I'm stuck with a Dewott and a very underpowered Drillbur. Can't wait until I get that Exp. Share in Castelia.

After thinking it over, I think the Pidove line is probably going to be a good addition. Given that I have a grass, electric, water, and a fighting type on my squad, I don't have much defense again grass itself or bug types, so a bird will probably fill in a gap until I find a fire type.

I did take a look at Venipede's final form, though. Jesus W. Christ!

Pidove is terrible though, it doesn't learn a single physical fighting move until way after the game is over and its stats are atrocious. I'd say pretty much anything, but especially Sigilyph or Momen over Pidove.

And Venipede is fantastic against grass and bug types.

The only problem with Petilil (and Cottonee, it's counterpart) is the lack in move variation. It's either Grass or bust, and sometimes you just want to kill stuff quick for EXP. If only Grass-type was better offensively.

Pidove is worth it for team Type coverage up to about the 3rd Gym. By then, you have access to better Pokemon (or types rather). It's so bizzare that they made this Pokemon learn all these special Flying-type moves and yet it's attack is the better stat. They had their chance to create the first ever special-centric early bird Pokemon line.

Game Freak does weird shit sometimes. Like how, up until Platinum, most bug types didn't learn a single bug move by level up. Then they all got Bug Bite and things are much better this gen, but fucking Absol and Rhyperior learned Megahorn when Pinsir didn't.

Or how Pidove is arguably worse than Pidgey, which is really saying something.

I think the weirdest thing though is that they gave poison a new attack... Which is the same thing as Sludge Bomb with 5 extra power. And it takes up a TM slot along with Sludge Bomb. I mean... really?

E-Z mode for the game is grabbing Arcehops and letting it learn Acrobatics. Don't give it a hold item and its a functional 165 base power after STAB. Combine that with its 140 base attack and you have a monster... as long as it stays above 50% HP.

it can't hit for shit because whelp it's a dark type poke with horrible ATK, it's only useful stat is its speed, and it explodes if another poke even looks in its direction

Yeah its UU at best, others do its job and better etc. I know. that sort of thing is common
106 base Speed is not a low stat and base 88 attacks are usable.
Its the new Persian. It'll be some quirky pokemon that you won't see often but it shouldn't be underestimated.
and also, I'm heavily assuming that Snatch is a valuable move. If Smogon has thought about banning Baton Pass then Snatch (and Psych Up) should be more common
It has a ton of useful moves that work well with its abilities (Undurden/Prankster) and stats that are just decent enough to pull something off
