This is really a late-to-the-party thread for me because I just got this game the other day. I watched Wonderboy basically beat most of the game before so I basically know the story. I usually wound up doing something else on the computer or something while he figured out puzzles so it's nice that those are still completely new to me.

The game takes place in ancient Greece and stars the lovable protagonist Kratos.

kratos.jpg
Basically, Kratos has terrible nightmares from his past and is completely mentally tortured by them. The goddess Athena offers forgiveness of his past if Kratos can destroy the God of War, Ares. And so begins our quest...

So now for the first time I'm making my way through the game and honestly, I just want to talk about it. On my playthrough I'm currently about to face Pandora's Guardian, so you know, that's fun.

Plus, God of War II comes out soon (next month I think, right?) so there's definitely stuff to be said there.

- Remember to use spoiler tags. Especially for any GoW2 stuffs.

Oh and NECA is making a cool Kratos figure

For $20 it's hardly a waste of money for the game. Incredibly fun gameplay, very fun puzzles, good difficulty and lots of unlockables.

Hoping it only takes as long as a DMC game. So I can pick it up a week before the second games release and at least beat the main story.

That's about right. It's not a particularly extremely long game from what I remember. Something like 8-10 hours ish on a first playthrough?

I need to play this again and not get frustrated. I just borrowed a friend's copy, so I guess I need to buy the thing also. I remember having mixed feelings about it, so another playthrough would do me good.

I picked it up over winter break for the first time, it was pretty fun. However, I am not a fan of any of the platforming sections.

I'm looking at you River Styx.

Definitely worth $20. Also makes me wonder why there's so few greek/roman based games. The mythology offers a lot of fun possibilities, and hopefully we'll see more of it.

I never really figured out why GoW got such great praise. The graphics are fantastic for a PS2, sure, but the gameplay is like a poor man's Ninja Gaiden. It sure is fun, and I love the subject material (Greek mythology), but the gameplay got stale for me pretty quickly.

Also, fuck the spinning-blade-pole climbing "puzzle" in Hades.

In summary: Good fun, everybody should play it, but it's not great.

At least Styx has the advantage of being the worst part of an awesome game, so at least less crappy via proxy.

Anyway, yeah, it doesn't take much longer than 10 hours or so to beat the game the first time on standard difficulty, the fun it going for the unlockables though.

I played this once, at a friends house (we took it in turns). You should definately pick it up; it's fun, easy to master, and you can do some pretty cool things with it, like turning you enemies to stone or ripping their heads off (do not play this game if you are easily shocked).

I loved God of War. This is coming from someone that beat Ninja Gaiden on both Normal and Hard difficulties. It's accessible, sure, but it's also got enough depth that advanced gamers have quite a bit to chew on.
From the looks of the GoW 2 videos, it seems as though God of War 2 will share the old school, arcade-like mentality with regard to the spectacles, especially where boss fights are concerned. Having that massive statue suddenly rise up from under the horizon and attack you will be very cool.

I've always thought this. It was this, Gladius, that other game that sounded like Gladius (one was the strategy RPG, one was the action game) and, uh, Battle of Olympus. That's all I can really recall. But it's such a rich setting.

God of War is well worth $20. It's a fun balls-to-the-wall action game, and what it lacks in depth (as compared to something like DMC3 or Ninja Gaiden) it makes up for by being so visceral. I'll never get tired of grabbing harpies, slamming them onto the ground, pounding on them with a big heel, then grabbing their wings and yanking back until they both snap off while they let out a screenching death cry.

It also nails that big, epic feeling that a game set in ancient Greece should have. The strings-and-vocal soundtrack, the biiiiiiig locales, everything. It's just a well-polished experience overall.

I liked the River Styx just fine. It was decent platforming, and a nice break from the more intensive gameplay of the fighting. Honestly, I think people are just biased against platforming in 3D, even when it works well. I guess people don't like insta-deaths anymore.

There's always the Caesar games, and Zeus (which I had a lot of fun with), both for PC.

Other than that, I liked God of War, but the pacing absolutely sucked. I kept expecting Pandora's Temple to end. And then it didn't. And then it didn't again. And then it didn't one more time. Sure, it's something new, but there was very little feeling of accomplishment while going through the game because I was still stuck in that one temple.

I think part of my problem is that I heard the game described as a gory, Greek mythology themed Zelda, when it's really not.

I disliked Styx more because I felt it didnt really fit with the rest of the game very well. It certainly wasn't the worst 3d platforming I've seen, but I've never been a big instadeath fan, and platforming isn't why i loved GoW.

Shadow of Rome wasn't necessarily based on mythology, instead focusing on a really skewed version of a real historical event.

Still, it was a pretty good game with a Final Fight mentality and a lot of really cool boss fights. The only downside is that you have to experience these really shitty stealth sequences, but they're brief enough that they don't drag the game down too much.

In fact, I remember a time before this game came out, wherein I'd always talk about how much I wanted a game where you participated in gladiatorial matches. One with a real time, action oriented focus. Shadow of Rome gave me this in spades.

I just completed this on Saturday, having started it over a year ago

In my defence there are whole months where I didn't even manage to touch it due to coursework.

First game I've completed on anything but easy too, though that's because it's the first time I haven't automatically started on easy.

I thought it had a suitably epic feel to it, looking forward to GoW2.

Just to drive the point home, the very start of Styx, with the pillars? I was dying on those.

It just seemed the platforming in GoW was tacked on and not done as well as the combat, just like the puzzle solving/airplane flying in DMC. And yeah, GoW isn't as good as DMC3 or NG, but so what? It's still a good game in its own right.

If DMC3 looked as pretty as god of war...I might fall for it...but goddamn is it ugly.

Really? I thought they both looked good. The later levels of DMC3 are especially nice-looking.

The final boss was so cheap I almost gave up. I forget exactly why, but I do remember that it was annoying. The game really needed at least one more boss battle, or maybe mini-bosses so that the flow of the game wouldn't have been disrupted.

I'm really excited for the second one, and am looking forward to, that's right, more boss battles.

I updated the first post just a tiny bit. Added some pictures and a little bit of text about the story of the game. Nothing big but I'm about to go actually play the game some more sooo ya know.
