This is really a late-to-the-party thread for me because I just got this game the other day. I watched Wonderboy basically beat most of the game before so I basically know the story. I usually wound up doing something else on the computer or something while he figured out puzzles so it's nice that those are still completely new to me.
The game takes place in ancient Greece and stars the lovable protagonist Kratos.
Basically, Kratos has terrible nightmares from his past and is completely mentally tortured by them. The goddess Athena offers forgiveness of his past if Kratos can destroy the God of War, Ares. And so begins our quest...
So now for the first time I'm making my way through the game and honestly, I just want to talk about it. On my playthrough I'm currently about to face Pandora's Guardian, so you know, that's fun.
Plus, God of War II comes out soon (next month I think, right?) so there's definitely stuff to be said there.

Oh and
NECA is making a cool Kratos figure

I'm looking at you River Styx.
Definitely worth $20. Also makes me wonder why there's so few greek/roman based games. The mythology offers a lot of fun possibilities, and hopefully we'll see more of it.
Also, fuck the spinning-blade-pole climbing "puzzle" in Hades.
In summary: Good fun, everybody should play it, but it's not great.
At least Styx has the advantage of being the worst part of an awesome game, so at least less crappy via proxy.
Anyway, yeah, it doesn't take much longer than 10 hours or so to beat the game the first time on standard difficulty, the fun it going for the unlockables though.
I am a freaking nerd.
From the looks of the GoW 2 videos, it seems as though God of War 2 will share the old school, arcade-like mentality with regard to the spectacles, especially where boss fights are concerned. Having that massive statue suddenly rise up from under the horizon and attack you will be very cool.
You mess with the dolphin, you get the nose.
God of War is well worth $20. It's a fun balls-to-the-wall action game, and what it lacks in depth (as compared to something like DMC3 or Ninja Gaiden) it makes up for by being so visceral. I'll never get tired of grabbing harpies, slamming them onto the ground, pounding on them with a big heel, then grabbing their wings and yanking back until they both snap off while they let out a screenching death cry.
It also nails that big, epic feeling that a game set in ancient Greece should have. The strings-and-vocal soundtrack, the biiiiiiig locales, everything. It's just a well-polished experience overall.

There's always the Caesar games, and Zeus (which I had a lot of fun with), both for PC.
Other than that, I liked God of War, but the pacing absolutely sucked. I kept expecting Pandora's Temple to end. And then it didn't. And then it didn't again. And then it didn't one more time. Sure, it's something new, but there was very little feeling of accomplishment while going through the game because I was still stuck in that one temple.
I think part of my problem is that I heard the game described as a gory, Greek mythology themed Zelda, when it's really not.
I'm not surprised that that costume won. And I know there is also a female costume for Kratos in GOW2.
I disliked Styx more because I felt it didnt really fit with the rest of the game very well. It certainly wasn't the worst 3d platforming I've seen, but I've never been a big instadeath fan, and platforming isn't why i loved GoW.

Let's not forget Shadow of Rome. I that game so hard.

Still, it was a pretty good game with a Final Fight mentality and a lot of really cool boss fights. The only downside is that you have to experience these really shitty stealth sequences, but they're brief enough that they don't drag the game down too much.
In fact, I remember a time before this game came out, wherein I'd always talk about how much I wanted a game where you participated in gladiatorial matches. One with a real time, action oriented focus. Shadow of Rome gave me this in spades.

It won?
Yes!

some other examples of what that was up against.
In my defence there are whole months where I didn't even manage to touch it due to coursework.
First game I've completed on anything but easy too, though that's because it's the first time I haven't automatically started on easy.
I thought it had a suitably epic feel to it, looking forward to GoW2.
that was pretty frustrating though.
I'm notoriously bad at 3d platforming. For some reason I can't judge angles right- I'll continually just leap off at crazy diagonals for no reason. Remember in Ninja Gaiden, right before the last fight, the platforming section of just running along and jumping? Took me about 50 tries because I suck that bad at it. No idea why.
I'm not that bad, but yeah, I can see that, when I play any sort of platformer the character always seems to gravitate to any inplement of instadeath. I made it though Styx, but I was very glad when it was over.

Just to drive the point home, the very start of Styx, with the pillars? I was dying on those.
It just seemed the platforming in GoW was tacked on and not done as well as the combat, just like the puzzle solving/airplane flying in DMC. And yeah, GoW isn't as good as DMC3 or NG, but so what? It's still a good game in its own right.
I'm really excited for the second one, and am looking forward to, that's right, more boss battles.
