Alright, so I've been contemplating getting an iPad for some time now. In a ridiculous impulse-driven move, I ordered a first generation iPad a few days ago.
Originally, I was just going to get the refurbished iPad for 350, but then I figured, hell, for 50 extra bucks I might as well get it new. Then tax was factored in (which surprised me because I'm used to not paying tax when I purchase stuff online), but I ordered it anyway. The final price was 430 dollars.
Almost immediately after I bought it I started kicking myself... If I had waited, for 70 dollars more I could have bought the iPad 2 (by ordering it through Amazon and thus avoiding tax). I initiated a return, and once it gets here tomorrow I planned on sending it back.
A new idea blossomed, however. I think maybe I should keep this first generation iPad, and then just use the 70 dollars to buy apps (it seems like the apps are more expensive for the iPad, and a lot of the good ones require cost something).
So tell me, H/A, will I regret keeping the original iPad? I don't care about the thinness or lightness of the new one, nor do I care about the cameras. The only thing I'm really worried about is speed. Will future apps have trouble running on the first gen iPad? (I don't care about games). I mean, I know when the iPad 3 rolls around the original iPad will have some problems, but I plan on upgrading then to the newer one. I just don't want my device to be stuttering and struggling to run apps for the next year. And I also hadn't factored in purchasing apps (or a case, for that matter), which is why upgrading to the iPad 2 wouldn't just cost 500 dollars. If I keep the iPad 1, however, I could get some cool apps, get a nice case (found one for twenty bucks), and still keep the price tag under 500.
What would you do?
Thanks.
I hate you and you hate me.

some apps might eventually require the faster specs too. all apps will run better.
i'd get the new one absolutely.
You're looking at a single core processor vs. dual core in the new one, and a far better GPU. Raw specs don't matter as much in tablets as they do on traditional PCs, but by keeping the old one you're going to reach that point where apps and games no longer support your device much quicker than you would on the iPad 2.
Do you guys know about the availability on Amazon? As in, will I be able to order it on March 11? And if so, do they get sold out within an hour or something crazy like that?
EDIT: And I do plan on upgrading to the iPad 3 (if it has a higher res screen), but I'll still get the iPad 2 because you can get a pretty penny for an Apple product if you sell it when a new one comes out (from what I've seen).
I don't think Amazon sells iPads except through resalers.

It says "By Apple" and it has free shipping with Amazon Prime. Are you saying this won't be offered for the new iPad?
I think since the iPad and iPhone can have data plans attached to them, Apple doesn't sell any of them through Amazon.
But this shows the iPad having the same info as the iPod Touch I linked to:

I'm not trying to prove you wrong or anything, I just honestly don't understand how Amazon works. I really want to buy it without tax
That is also not sold by Amazon. There will probably be resellers selling them, but I don't know how fast the stock of iPad2s is going to go, also, you probably won't be able to pre-order through a reseller.
And as long as I can get it through Amazon.com without paying tax, I'm happy (which it seems like I'll be able to do).
There are no iPad 2 pre-orders. If you go to Apple's online shop, they tell you to get in line on the 11th. Maybe a licensed third-party seller like Best Buy'll be doing presales, but that sounds like a crapshoot.
Ah, I read "Order starting on the 11th" as "pre-order" when I was looking at their site. Maybe I'll waltz by the Apple store on the 11th and see if they have any left. I don't think it'll be crazy like the iPhone 4 release was.
Best Buy doesn't even know how many they're getting yet.
really? wouldn't the lines be big because of no preordering?
i'm wondering if i order it day-of on the apple store, will they have enough stock to send it (preferably by 2 day shipping). or i could hope that getting out of school at ~2:30 is enough time to get in line at the apple store to buy it there
Satans..... hints.....
I waited in line for 7 hours for the iPhone 4 with a pre-order. I don't see it being that bad.
Yeah, the new one is coming out in 4 days, not 6 months to a year. There's a difference.
I'm picking up the refurb, but I'm unlikely to run any 3rd party apps. Just want a long battery life browsing machine that can do email and I don't have a netbook already. If there's a decent RDP client I might pick that up.
The biggest thing you'd gain from the new iPad is the boost in speed internally. Stuff like cameras, weight; you'll adapt to that without really worrying about it too much. But as an owner of an iPhone 3G, many of the apps and games that are out now run really sluggishly on my phone, because they're optimized for a faster device. I can still use them, but I'm no longer the target platform. You'll probably run into a similar thing in about a year or so.
Oh. My derpiness. I'd thought it was longer than that. Heck yeah, if they're not charging you a restocking fee get that swapped out.
