I can't draw well [worth shit] but I'm trying to make a world map for a project I'm working on.
The map's pretty big but I'm having problems with one main part - the canyons. I can draw mountains till the cows come home, but the moment I have to draw canyons and valleys and stuff, I can't do it.
The map I'm working on needs a web of canyons right around that area of the map, but I have no idea how to draw the recesses in the proper thatched style. I've combed the internet for references, but I can't find anything useful.
DJ- I really like that style you have been developing-
I might try just toning her skin- ever so slightly. Like a very light gray kind of stretched over where her cheecks might be a bit rosy, and the nose- like tonally describing the texture of the skin- but not really rendering it via a lightsource. Skin has alot of natural variations, so you can preserve your really nice linework, and still give the figure a little more body- without having to adhere to cast shadows and a bold lightsource. It will retain the positive aspects of your design.
That's a fantastic idea. The trouble I have is because I lazily use only a 2H mechanical pencil, I'm moderately limited in the variation of tone I can use.
I've been toying with the idea of going back to an old graphite/Copic marker combination I used to use in order to retain the linework in addition to giving it some tonal variation. ( Old-school example: http://hustletronix.com/nick/art/2004/soldier2.jpg )
I've been allotting myself between 10 and 20 minutes for these sketches depending on the size of the drawing, focusing on gestures and quickly building up the forms. Still quite rusty though since this is the most sketching i've done in a couple of years.
Nice ink work, JP. Has a nice Frank-Miller-in-his-prime kind of feel.
I dunno, Ein. It looks pretty okay to me. You've got all sorts of perspectives clashing with each other in that fantasy map way, so that seems fine. What I thought you could do is show the gradual slope out of the canyon, like so:
DMAC: stunning work as always. My only gripe is the bottom fella's right tooth (our left) seems to be in front or growing out of his lip, rather than inside his mouth like the other tooth.
Radar, I didn't bring it up when you first posted your progress on that, but I think your colors are doing Tam's lines some sweet justice.
DJ, it's good to see your art again. These new sketches are looking pretty cool. A little closer observation would go a long way for the details (like the hands).

I actually have some doodle doodles. The concept work variety. I'll put them behind a spoiler tag so they're not a million pixels long.
Guys, I've been staring at this all day and I can't decide if they look enough like kids or if the composition is shit. I really think it has potential, but I just can't look at it anymore today. Please guide me.
edit: update below
All the legs are too short, and it's accentuated by the fact that all the people are very short. And also have crazy different head sizes. The girl's is much, much smaller than the two guys, which probably wouldn't be that extreme of a difference and it makes it look more like error rather than style. Also your characters are like, four or five heads tall which makes them roughly dwarfish in size. Which is fine if they're kids, but their faces imply more teen/young adult features.
Yes, consult Toji's link, consult Loomis' FDFAIW section on boy's proportions, consult reference. All 3 kids are problematic: The boy on the left is an awkward amalgam of adult and child proportions, the girl looks like she's 2 feet tall, the fat boy has Cotton Hill syndrome, even accounting for some stylistic license.
Oh god I do not want it to look like a swastika.!!!!!!!!
I did not even notice. DAMMMMIT. I will change it up a bit
Also thanks for the feedback - It's odd because I love the chocolate bear ( yes chocolate ) but thats what feedback is about - getting it seen through others eyes.
Frank, I think you might benefit from doing some quick studies of tween faces before returning to this particular drawing. I think it's an improvement over the previous one, but it's hard to tell without comparison. Still not quite there, but a step in the right direction.
I'd say watch some movies that deal with teenagers. "School of Rock" "Super 8" "Jack""E.T". The 80's had a lot of movies dealing with teenagers and tweenagers.
Also, flip on the Disney channel.

Woke up drawing Le Nud3-NSFW I guess. They're modest nudes.
I'm off to work.

Aren't most canyons carved by rivers, though?

These were fun.
Here is my new Demo reel. I chucked together a heap of stuff into the wee hours of the morning.
Nothing from the agency I work for - all my own stuff done in my spare time just to avoid any issues.
Feedback welcome.

Your vector work is awesome....!!! Love those characters - reminds me of Castle Crashers.
Where abouts are you doing your Internship? Adelaide I am guessing ? Rising Sun?
Also right before the bear I'm not so sure about the disco swastika.

I didn't notice anything overtly swasticky about it.
Something you want to tell us, Bacon?

It's out of alignment and the arms are different lengths. By that logic I'd get offended every time I walked past a dutch windmill.

I don't know, if you pause it, you can see it's not a swastika, but when it's in action it goes so fast it really does look like a swastika.
