    1) Is there any reason not to put the SETA menu option to the maximum?

    2) Why does the SETA seem to randomly cut out on me? I hit 'autopilot', 'j', and then lean back; and then without touching anything, I'm back in normal time.

    1) You can generally max it out; however, the faster it is, the less time the game has to calculate the AI for every ship in the sector - this can lead to wonkiness (ships crashing into things) but can also be abused if you or you ship is being fired upon since the AI enemies probably won't be able to track you efficiently.

    2) Either you're tapping a key or are approaching another ship or station and the game is giving you a chance to do something about it. In Terran sectors, especially though, the stations are massive and what the game considers a good distance to cut SETA can be on the order of tens of kilometers.

Doing one of the early missions for the Terran campaign and while I'm supposed to follow this pirate ship, I happened to disable a pair of (I think) Xenon L ships and I claimed them and sent them to a station. Are they better ships than the one I started with? Should I just sell them? What should I do with them? I didn't really look at them at all other than to figure out how to get them to go to a station since I was busy trying to follow that other ship and all. Also, how do I repair my own ship's hull?

Best thing to do with the L's (and your own ship) is to hop out of your ship in your space-suit (Ctrl+E), and use your space suit's repair laser to get their hull to max. Then either sell them or enjoy 100% hull. The repair laser sucks however, so be prepared to wait a while for it to fully repair. I generally propped my 360 controller on RMB so that I could go do something else while it repaired.

if you open the steam overlay while repairing it locks your laser on, thats how I rolled

If you're using a joystick, then minor fluctuations in throttle count as input that bumps you out of SETA, you can disable that by selecting a target view window - that disables input while selected

As suggested, I did the Terran Pilot start, and after a bit they gave me a free scout ship! Which has a slower max speed (but a much higher potential max speed) than my starting vessel for some reason. M/s is the only value governing 'how fast am I going', right?

    Yes to your last question.

The scout ship they give you is a much lighter frame than the one you start in - it's a dragster to your muscle car. It can be upgraded to be as fast and maneuverable as hell, and it can use the really awesome Terran fighter guns, but it doesn't come with any (and you can't afford them for a long time), and it can only hold a single, fairly weak shield generator.

I usually sell it as soon as they give it to me and invest in my current ship. In a later mission, they'll give you three as a reward. Those I usually keep because, by that time, I can outfit them with something, and they make a decent, though not awesome, escort for a system trader.

Okay, finished that leg of the mission and I caught up with one of my claimed Xenon ships on the way back and I'm repairing it right now. I'll probably strip it and sell it and keep the other Xenon ship for now and possibly use or sell it later, depending on how things go. I'm really liking this game, though I wish autopilot wasn't so useless. At least I can speed travel up so there's that.

I lost my claimed ship. Accidentally hit the gate before I was ready, and either the ship crashed into me and blew up, or it otherwise glitched and I lost it.

If I recall Xenon Ls aren't that bad - respectable stats when upgraded, and early on they can be sold for a hefty chunk of change (probably much more than you'll be getting from missions).

I think I still have a few in my game that I use for quick in-sector transport. They are by no means the best M3 in the game but you'll be seeing quite a few of them come your way.

I'm at work but I was wondering, what causes the enemy ship to be able to be claimed and not simply explode? Out of the 5 ships I fought then, only 2 were abandoned or whatever and the rest blew up. Is it just chance that once they reach a certain percentage of health they'll jump out or whatever it is that happens?

From what I've seen: they won't always jump and they won't jump if they still have shields or they are in a big ship, other than that it's just random once they start taking damage

How do I change the controls to more closely match X3:R in Terran Conflict? I am not a fan whatsoever of the cursor fire.

Also...for whatever reason I can't find the key to auto accelerate to full speed...I know backspace is full stop...just can't find the opposite.

also, is there a way to keep tabs on my computer-controlled ships? I sent them into battle with some pirates, and lost one.

As flawed as X3:TC is in many ways, I still squeezed 60+ hours out of it before I even tried any mods. The core strength of the experience--flying around, making money, building moneymaking stuff--is so fun that it helps make up for a lot of what the game doesn't really deliver.

But yeah, there's a whole lot they could do better with this new entry.

God, that's always how I start the game -- go farm pirates until I get a Nova, maybe a Nova Raider, then hightail it to the nearest Xenon sector to farm an L / LX.

About to start playing X3:TC, and I had two quick questions, this seems the best place to ask:
Are there any mods that are really compulsory? Not looking for things like the faction wars mentioned earlier, just things that fix broken elements.
I don't have a joystick, and I'm not invested enough to get one of these, much as I might like to, so I was thinking of just getting one of these. Would that be any good for this (and any other flight sims I might play) or am I better off with just KBaM at that point?

The latter work just fine. I know, I've got one. :)

You should get the bonus pack. I also consider Gazz's mods to be indespensible: Complex Cleaner and Mars. I also like the one that adds jumpdrives and transporters to basically all equipment docks. And there's another mod that cleans out the low value asteroids; I like using that one as well, so I'm not sitting there trying to find the handful of decent high value ones. Ring of Fire is pretty amazing for sector defense, but costly (and if you want to use it much, you'll need to set up your own defense sat production line).

Yes. But make sure you take it off auto-update. Or one day it will update and it will break all your mods and you will be pissed.

I'll just chime in with a random helpful hint (since I had to discover it myself and I don't remember it being mentioned in the manual): get docking computers installed on your important ships. Once you do, your ships will automatically and instantaneously dock at any station if you set your autopilot to dock with one within 5 km or so.

Saves all of that time you'd use to dock manually or letting the autopilot try the longest, slowest route possible.

I tried the Terran start that people recommended, but it ended with me being given a mission against pirates that absolutely slaughtered me. One of their fighters would break my shields in a second, my weapons had no noticable effect on them, and there were half a dozen flying around the station I was meant to scan.
Going to try a freighter start, see if that's a bit more viable.

Pirates are usually no big deal, but occasionally you'll fight a Blastclaw with a Plasma Burst Generator (it kind of resembles a flamethrower) which will absolutely wreck your shit near-instantly.

Early on, it's important to save often (automatically at stations, or buy Salvage Insurance). I don't think the actual story missions get too difficult until maybe about halfway through the Terran campaign. You may have accepted a fighting mission a bit out of your league.

The game is fun regardless of how you start. Once you get some money under you belt you can switch how you play on the fly.

I know what you mean. I had to do the same thing. You don't need a mod, there's a setting for it. Hold on, I'll just load it up real quick and check where it is.

And that was the last we ever heard from him...

Ok, got it. Go to Options (checkbox in the lower left), Controls, and the Game tab. You want to bind "Toggle Classic Flight Mode" to the right mouse button.

I also recommend binding your mouse's back button (if you use one) to "Cancel/Escape", which is under the Interface tab. It makes everyday menu navigation much more intuitive.
