I'm not at home right now but when I am I'll hit you up on Steam and we'll see if we can get this sorted out. It looks like you need to upload a server config file with a lot of things predefined. Then we can start uploading missions.
Also loaded both games, and got sixupdater up and running. Guessing I should install ACE at the very least. Wondering if I should be rocking anything else modwise.

I just picked this up, almost have vanilla installed, then onto OA. I'm going to do the tutorial stuff first some I'm not an asshole, but I would love to play support, medics, evac, heli pilot (either ferrying people, or providing air support), anything like that.
I look forward to playing with you guys! (great OP, by the way. Convinced me to buy it before I even read half of it)
Yeah, if you're just now trying it for the first time, it might be a while before helo pilot is a non-comedy option. Medic, however, is tons of fun, at least in ACE. Probably not bad in vanilla either.
Did some tutorial missions (murdered a squad several times in a helicopter, crawled around with broken legs for a while, and destroyed several millions of dollars worth of military assets) with relatively few issues except those to do with the ridiculous complexity of movement available in this game...
Then I started up single player, and suddenly my guy can't turn left or right without using the "Delete" and "End" keys. If I move my mouse to the right, it only turns my head, but my guy walks comically into the wall. No amount of fudging with the control scheme has corrected this issue. Help?
That sounds like you're stuck in freelook. Is your alt key stuck? Have you tried double tapping it to make sure you're not in freelook? I think alt is the default. You may want to double check that in controls.
Haha. Holy shit. I'm decent at transport heli. At least in the tutorial. Need some combat experience. But fuck me if I can fly s damn attack copter. Is there any trick to this? Any tips that made it 'click' for you guys?

I set up my stick and I've been flying helicopters for a good chunk of today. I think I peaked out after about two hours and started to unlearn everything I'd picked up by that point.
They are fun, for sure, but it's gonna take steady hands, steadier nerves and a shit ton of practice.
Practice a million times and always remember that gravity and momentum actually affect how your chopper handles. You can and you will stall your chopper.
Oh! Another good skill to learn is how to land when your engine is shot, or how to fly without a tail rotor! Get a joystick, TrackIR and pedals and then you can be like Liu:
I remember some wonderful times playing arma 2 after release with PAJoe folks. I was so close to buying OA but then I remembered that my desktop is no longer available and I think this engine would melt my laptop into a brick of plastic-metal.
But yeah everyone who can play this, buy it, it's worth it.
I picked up Combined Operations, since I'm rather fond of these more realistic games. Problem is my internet's kinda slow, so it'll probably be a day or two before I can even start the game to poke at the tutorial, let alone actually play online.
So before I play anymore online, I will finish the tutorial! And properly configure Vent!
Apologies.
I don't think and apologies are necessary, it was kind of lame you could be on vent and hear what we were saying but oh well, once you get vent working it'll be great to have another person to play with.

would have joined you guys earlier, but we sort of had a tornado warning and my power was flickering so I dropped for awhile
Got Combined Operations, should be ready to go in a few hours. What exactly is the ACE thing people speak of, sounds like it adds things but do I need it to play with you guys online?
Here's a breakdown of me playing the prologue portion of Harvest Red
Team: Enemies!
me: Where?
T:Target down
m:What
scroll to firefight outside of town
*dies*
*dies*
*teammate dies*
Me: Oh it was this way the entire time
Now that I am in the mission proper, I keep dying because I will get a certain point in the game and when I call for a ride, the helicopter pilot will do something stupid and crash. Can I/How to make interim saves!
I see a lot of people mentioning helicopters, but no airplanes. Are they used much?
A little. Most of the time, there are only one or two planes. At the same time, there will usually be a dozen helicopters. They have a better damage model in game, too. They can take damage to engine or rotors, stuff like that, while an airplane will just explode.
Getting this to run has proven to be more annoying than initially thought. Arma II is not cooperating and spewing out an error about a bad serial on setup or something. Oh well, google-fu time.
Edit: Well, I got that figured out. Steam forum had an answer at the top. Now my character seems to be stuck in perma sprint, and my mouse sensitivity is so high that I do 360s trying to edge a bit to the side. This game, it apparently loves me.
Eh, can't handle the jank in trying to get this to run. Combined Ops won't run. I get an error launching regular ARMA 2. OA runs fine. I'll come back to it in a few months or so.

To be honest with you, it probably won't be much/any cheaper than it is right now.
Though, if you wanted to give Vanilla a shot before jumping into an OA purchase, that might be worth waiting for.
Because I'm almost ready.

I find I fly about 300% better when I'm practicing offline than when I'm actually flying in a mission. Combination of FPS and nerves, I think.

Does this game have something like this?
OpFlash
Because it needs something like that...
It's made by the same people. It's pretty much a next generation version of Op flash.. With not nearly as good of a story.
It's much closer to Opflash than that shitty dragons rising cash in game that came out last year.

It makes ARMA2 10x as awesome.

Found some odd bugs in the campaign, which caused me to have to redo the first mission a few times.
