Why doesn't anyone like the zoo? Don't you all remember the boat?
Why doesn't anyone like the zoo? Don't you all remember the boat?
Oh do I ever remember the boat... :winky:
The zoo's just not all that exciting, especially when half the animals were AWOL. At the best of times it's mildly entertaining. Besides, lots of places have zoos; only Seattle has a space needle.

what time does the MMT start on the 8/24 (or 24/8....same thing)?
Traditionally, the MMT starts around 9sm both Wednesday and Thursday. Though I did start Boston's MMt at 8:30am this year. A concrete time wont be posted until the final schedule goes up (probably early August).
Thanks for getting the voting site setup for me VT!
I'll try to go in there next week to add all the sites and info. Anyone can add locations, so if you feel inclined, go add some spots and info. I won't be able to get there to add everything until next week.
While my girlfriend and I were in Boston for PAX East we walked around the city quite a bit. To my surprise we spent a lot of time in the old graveyards... its with this in mind that I would suggest two additional stops for your consideration.
- The grave of Jimi Hendrix (which is in Renton - about a 30-40 minute drive from downtown)
- The grave of Bruce Lee (which is on Capital Hill in Seattle)

I wanted to go on this last year but I came down late Thursday so I missed it all!
This year I'm coming down Wednesday mid-day so I'd be up for part of Wednesday and Thursday!
Under ground sounds fun.
I'll also put a vote in for the Aquarium... just because I like fish and it sounds cool...
Also I have a transportation suggestion: why don't we rent a passenger van. I wouldn't mind commandeering it as long as everyone chipped in for the cost.
can you join part way through the tour eg. if i missed the first day can i join on the 2nd day?
That's been how it has worked, yeah. You can even meet up with the group part-way through a day, just see where they would be based on the schedule and keep updated via Twitter and possibly texts in case anything shifts. If people have a heads-up that you will be joining at a certain location then they will be on the look-out and quicker with tweeting updates.

I missed this last year...but me and my girlfriend will be there Thursday and would love to participate. Therefore, I agree that it would be great to do the underground tour on Thursday.
Another great thing to do is the Ice Cream Cruise. Traditionally they were only on Sundays, so taking the MMT never worked out, BUT they now have Thursday/Friday/Saturday, and Larry also does charters/party cruises if you wanted to book an exclusive trip.
This is the BEST water tour in Seattle. It's cheaper (and less obnoxious) than the Ducks, about 1/7th the cost of an Argosy Cruise, and you get a real, live narration of sites as opposed to a ferry boat. The boat goes around Lake Union, so you get to see Gas Works from the lake, go under the 1-5 bridge, and see some other pretty cool local (but famous) Seattle sites.

PLUS, ICE CREAM!!!
That does sound awsome... we could kill a few birds with one stone by the sounds of it. And yes ICE CREAM!
So depending on the distance of each site we visit, how do people like my van rental idea?

In my experience, using vans (or cars to a lesser degree) for large tours is incredibly difficult in a lot of areas of Seattle. Vans are much more difficult to park (and maneuver...) and for a tour I led a few years ago it was almost impossible to find a spot to park even one van, and completely impossible to park multiple vans in the same area. It might be slightly easier depending on the day/time, but the entire downtown area is usually pretty packed. And, it almost always has to be street/open lot parking, most vans won't fit into a lot of downtown & vicinity parking garages.
The year before last, Isha organized the "party bus" which worked out well because the bus driver was pretty knowledgeable about the area and knew where to be and how long he could stay there. But, it was still really tough to get to some of the places we wanted to stop at, and we had to skip a few stops because we couldn't find a place to stop or park.
VT's '08 tour with lots of individual cars seemed to work pretty well, but it all depends on willing drivers to carpool. And last year's relying on buses and walking sounded like it was ok, except that you have to rely on inconsistent bus schedules and sometimes have to walk quite a ways to reach your destination.
Good luck in whatever you decide to do!!! My recommendation would be to cluster as many spots together as you can, and only rely on transportation when it's absolutely necessary. Depending on the numbers, it's pretty easy to get around the city without needing a vehicle at all, it just means that you might have to wait a bit longer, but the tradeoff is that you won't have to worry about finding and paying for parking.
This is the first year I'm actually flying in a bit early specifically to have time to get out and see Seattle and I definitely want to hit up the MMT. We're flying in Wednesday evening so I don't think we'll catch the 1st day but I will be up for whatever Thursday events you guys will have planned.

I finally updated the OP and the voting site! I made some changes, so go check your votes and alter them if needed:
-added Lakeview Cemetery (Bruce Lee and Brandon Lee's graves) and the Ice Cream Cruise.
-took out Downtown Waterfront (too large and vague. many of our options take place in that area, so vote for the ones that interest you) and...something else that I forgot...
-made note of which items are included in the CityPass. CityPass will save you money on admission if we visit 3 or more of the places included.
Also, please check that when you sign up on the voting site you checked the proper day(s) you plan on attending. I will be using that to make the schedule. If you've mentioned in this thread that you only plan to come Thursday, it's all but meaningless to me. Mark it that way on the site!
As for renting a van: I appreciate that you are offering to drive if we do rent one. I see a couple issues (other than what Nomad said):
1. I believe a passenger van holds 11-15 people. I'm certain there were more people than that last year. So we'd need at least 2 vans and 2 drivers.
2. $$$ It would require either someone to pay for the van rental themselves, or everyone who wants to attend would have to pay some towards the rental. I think it's generally appreciated that the MMT does not have an upfront cost (people can spend as much or as little as they want).
If more people want to rally behind this rental idea, it's something we can discuss further.
i'd like to visit U dub but i guess i can do that in my own time.
Depending on what day, I could maybe give you a mini-tour! Or, at least I can tell you what the good spots are!
i was gonna check out the book store and buy some shirts, hoodies, etc.
anything else worth looking at on campus?
The Suzzallo Library reading room is really pretty, Suzzallo is the ornate building on Red Square (where the bricks are), and just south of that is Drumheller Fountain, it's a pretty cool fountain, and whether it's on or not you have an awesome view of Mt. Rainier.
There's all kinds of random other things on campus too, like the Physics Astronomy building has a working pendulum, and... other than that, it's just another pretty campus...

It's actually a campus full of history if you know what you're looking for.
It was the site of the 1909 Alaska-Yukon Exposition and was the impetuous for the Olmsted Brothers (the designers of New York's Central Park) to design the park system of Seattle. HistoryLink.org has a bunch of great resources about the Northwest to read if you like reading about history.
I had very much fun last year but will be working during the MMT this year. (sad face)
You guys should check out Fremont. There's the Theo Chocolate factory, Paseo is an amazing Cuban sandwich place, Brouwer's (may be 21+) has excellent food and about a million beers on tap and Jai Thai has a table where you can sit on floor pillows. All this and more!
I've lived here 3 years now so feel free to contact me if you're looking for things to do in the area. If you've never been to Seattle, you have to go to Pike Place at some point, which is in walking distance of the convention center.
And make sure the vuvuzela comes back for another year! See you at PAX.
I unfortunately am holding off on my voting due to some hotel snafu's I may not make it up till thursday instead of wednesday, so do not want to unfairly mis align the voting.
I doubt I will be able to do Wednesday because I'll be spending 6 hours at a salon. :-D I am however free on Thursday. I voted with this my in profile.
A small update.
Voting: You can keep voting/editing your votes until August 1st. I'll be making the schedule based on where the votes stand that day. Right now, 24 people have signed up on the site. Right now, Seattle Center and the EMP/Sci-Fi museum are tied for the #1 place. Convenient since they're right next to each other.
Buttons: Do you guys want MMT buttons? Does anyone have ideas for a design? I'm late on this, so we have to get moving if we are to have buttons. Also, I have no graphic skills, so I'll have to outsource the design work to one of you lovely forumers. (Menolly?)
CCST: The CCST is happening this year. It was late to pop up, but there it is. Do we want to greet them when they arrive in Seattle this year?
