The Decline of Manliness in Contemporary Society

Squall LeonhartSquall Leonhart Registered User regular
edited June 2011 in Debate and/or Discourse
Has anyone else noticed a loss of manliness over the course of the past hundred years or so? It seems like men are slowly becoming more and more like women. Men are starting to think it's acceptable to show their emotions and be open, more like girls than men. Don't get me wrong, sometimes this can be a good thing and can lead to more successful relationships and to accepting other people for who they are. However it can also be done too much, to the point where it becomes pathetic, liberal, weak, and general failures of society. It can also lead to ruining relationships, since while many girls claim to want a really sensitive guy, they also want a strong man with a mysterious dark side to him. Please tell me that I'm not the only person here who noticed this. Also, what do you suggest we do about it? And last but not least, do you think that the loss of manliness is more good than bad or more bad than good?

Just last month I tried to buy a fair young maiden from her father. I was willing to trade my best herd of goats for her, too. But the maiden in question spoke up, and even worse she spoke up to object to my offer. And to top it off, her father, instead of giving her the beating she deserved, actually agreed with her! Apparently some men think that women are worth more than cattle in this pathetic, liberal, weak, and general failure of a society we live in. What do you suggest we do about it? And last but not least, do you think that the loss of men's ownership of women is more good than bad or more bad than good?

Hi there! I'm going to actually dissect everything that's wrong with your post.
Has anyone else noticed a loss of manliness over the course of the past hundred years or so?
I'm only 26, so no. I don't think you've been alive long enough to notice that either.
It seems like men are slowly becoming more and more like women.
    Which women?
Men are starting to think it's acceptable to show their emotions and be open
Because it is acceptable and should be. There's no reason not to.
, more like girls than men.
Then clearly men were getting it wrong at some point!

Don't get me wrong, sometimes this can be a good thing and can lead to more successful relationships and to accepting other people for who they are.
    I know it's great right?!
    However
See, usually when someone says acting a certain way leads to better relationships and societal acceptance, there's not a but. That's it, end of story. So let's see what you think is more important than healthy relationships and arbitrary societal disapproval.
it can also be done too much, to the point where it becomes pathetic,
    According to who?
    liberal
    That's pretty great actually.
    weak
I'd say it takes far more testicles to show one's weakness openly. Like, three even. Hiding your weakness is far easier and possibly even cowardly depending on the reasons and the emotional weakness.
    and general failures of society.
    This doesn't make sense grammatically.
It can also lead to ruining relationships, since while many girls claim to want a really sensitive guy, they also want a strong man with a mysterious dark side to him.
Uh huh. Besides the grotesque stereotype here, openly sharing your emotions doesn't prevent a person from being strong, mysterious, or black.
Please tell me that I'm not the only person here who noticed this.
    Here? Yeah, probably.
Also, what do you suggest we do about it?
    Nothing! It's great!
And last but not least, do you think that the loss of manliness is more good than bad or more bad than good?
You never actually defined manliness beyond a reluctance to be open about their feelings. So I'm not sure what you think is being lost here.

American manliness has many and terrible strands. And go anywhere from pathetic, to desperate, and down to other objectives that could substitute for vile. It all seems inspired by going back to a vague idea of when men were men, by people who are completely disconnected for the hardships of the times they want to go back to. As far as I can tell, being a man comes down to having a stubble and hating your mother-in-law, or something like that.

He even took the time to rescue the occasional kitten.
    DARLING ETHEL:
To-day as I was marching to church, with Sloane some 25 yards behind, I suddenly saw two terriers racing to attack a kitten which was walking down the sidewalk. I bounced forward with my umbrella, and after some active work put to flight the dogs while Sloane captured the kitten, which was a friendly, helpless little thing, evidently too well accustomed to being taken care of to know how to shift for itself. I inquired of all the bystanders and of people on the neighboring porches to know if they knew who owned it; but as they all disclaimed, with many grins, any knowledge of it, I marched ahead with it in my arms for about half a block. Then I saw a very nice colored woman and little colored girl looking out of the window of a small house with on the door a dressmaker's advertisement, and I turned and walked up the steps and asked if they did not want the kitten. They said they did, and the little girl welcomed it lovingly; so I felt I had gotten it a home and continued toward church.
