X-Com: The hideous death of everything you ever loved. Also: New FPS!
The irony of people talking about Valkyria Chronicles X-Com is that Julian Gollop really really wanted to make a game that, according to him would control basically the same as Valkyria Chronicles some years before Valkyria Chronicles came out.
Only problem with their new idea ITS FUCKING MASS EFFECT.
Edit: this is more of a joke and not anger at all, but still, it's just 1950's Mass Effect.
Mass Effect clones aren't such a bad thing if they give us improved shooter mechanics and something different in the setting while letting bioware handle all RPG stuff. Just focus on the gameplay, people. Leave the dramatic story telling to Bioware.

A Mass Effect clone isn't an inherently bad idea, but making the first new Xcom game in almost fifteen years a Mass Effect clonse is definitely inherently bad. You see, we already have Mass Effect. Two Mass Effects, in fact, with a third on the way.
What we don't have are any good, new games which are remotely like the old Xcom games. I don't want another Mass Effect. We don't need another Mass Effect. And even if the game is great, I'm intrinsically opposed to it because what I want is for a game carrying the Xcom label to be an actual Xcom game. As it is, I don't even care to see what the videos show until I start hearing about extensive research trees, base planning, and destructible environments.

See all of the elements that make up the classic XCOM gameplay are elements of niche gaming. All of that intense depth, strategy and tactics are anathema to the big publishers. Pining for a AAA publisher/developer to take these concepts and do them up is like asking them to set piles of money on fire.

Kind of like making a clone of one game, then putting it up against the very game that its cloning, even choosing to release it on the same day.
Oh wait...

Hey, everyone wants to play as a marine in the Middle East who, for some reason or another, always ends up alone and doing everything.

Nah man, be fair. It isn't always in the Middle East.

it could be Russia.
The Red Menace lives on, you know. It's only a matter of time before Lenin smashes out of his glass coffin to resume the quest to crush Capitalism and Freedom.
So I'm away from my computer for a bit, on a crappy laptop, and I decided to load up X-COM because, hey, X-COM. I've just started engaging Snakemen, and my Flying Armor is so new that only about half my squad of ~15 people has it. I've just researched the hover plasma tank but haven't built one yet, and my Skyranger is on its way to a landed large UFO. Please let it be Floaters and not mind-controlling Sectoids...
Also this game is awesome.

Haha, no doubt. I never said it was smart. I'm just thinking that's the way they'd see it.
I'd love an update to the classic XCOM formula too. I'm just not going to get all hurgle-burgle over what they are actually doing with the license. Who knows, it could even be fun.
I find myself idly thinking about Frozen Synapse and X-Com
I kind of wonder which bits of X-Com I liked the most. I think it was more the metagame than anything else.
I think I convinced myself that I liked the random bullshit chance but I think I did not actually like that stuff.
I like the turn-based battles, but after a while I find myself wishing there was an auto-complete button so I can get back to my research and base building. The strategic world map is definitely my favorite part. After the very beginning when you have some better weapons and tech, raiding downed scouts for elerium gets to be such a chore. Especially when you spend half an hour killing all the dudes and find out that the reactor didn't survive the crash and all you get is a load of plasma pistols.
I just chase them around the world and then pounce when they land. When you have 3 hovertanks and a bigger GDP than most of the world, its not a big deal to sacrifice a few to win.

My friend and I used to "hot seat" the game on my 386. He was much like you in that the research, resupply, development, basebuilding, were his area of interest. Mine was the tactical combat. I learned the hard way not to launch my troopers on a mission unless he had loaded out the ship. Nothing like deploying with nothing but empty guns and stun rods.

Must have made missions with Chrysalids and Snakemen very interesting.

Was apocalypse any good? I remember playing a demo and struggling to get it to run but being intrigued by it.
After playing a fair bit of Frozen Synapse recently I'm itching to try XCOM/X-Com again.
Apocalypse is a lot of fun. You should definitely check it out.
The real-time mode that they put in for Squad Mode was pretty awful; really against the core element of X-COM, I always thought. Fortunately it was an option, and once I found that out I rather enjoyed it.

I thought the Apoc realtime mode would be a horrible disaster, but it turns out that I ended up liking it immensely more than the turn-based mode. You can still pause combat to give orders, but the realtime mode makes you able to finish battles in a fraction of the time of turn-based. Having a UFO raiding mission be over in five minutes instead of forty-five is great, especially when most of that time would be spent with your guys waiting in position by the front door and you constantly hitting the end turn button.
And generally speaking, your guys are actually a lot more competent in realtime. Instead of only a few guys being able to reaction fire, everyone who sees the target can reaction fire immediately. Makes scenarios like suicide attackers much, much less obnoxious.

I can totally dig the missions going faster (especially the later ones... ugh), but I had far better success in turn-based mode.
Then again, I wasn't any good at the Baldur's Gate games either, in the same vein. So maybe it's just me.

That's what grenades are for.
If they scream, you're clean. If they don't, explosives.
