Does piracy hurt business as much as businesses say? No.
Does anyone do it for any reasons that are not entirely selfish? No.
Nothing about this is in any way new, either.
I don't think producers and publishers would spend the money and resources they do on anti-piracy solutions if they didn't have good reason to believe it costs them considerable amounts of money.
Also any individuals "reasons" are irrelevant. Piracy is stealing.
While I can't argue that piracy isn't a problem, they do lose a decent chunk of honest customers to piracy what with the crap they pull in an attempt to stop it, and spend a pretty penny to do so.
I can't blame them for it, but the cure is almost worse than the disease, with the case of some companies.

Pirates are assholes. Remember when people pirated the humble indie bundle? the one that was for charity?
Also there is a reason to use DRM other than to prevent piracy.
They need to show to potential investors that they are doing something to combat piracy, and DRM is a something, regardless of how ineffective it may actually be.

But dude, like, they would have to set up a Paypal account and stuff and that's all just such a hassle
but then I read a book called Wealth of Networks. The book's not about piracy, but about how social production is a viable alternative to traditional models. It's a really awesome book
Do software pirates have nine Pirate Lords who each hold claim to a different part of the internet and only convene as a council for matters of grave import?
Yes but the council has not convened recently due to the chaos caused by the internet kraken
What doesn't make sense to me is how the cost to reproduce a digital work perfectly approaches zero, yet I'm charged close to the same price for it as the same work that comes in pretty packaging. Also I wonder why DVDs were priced about the same as their equivalent VHSs when the media was transitioning despite the dramatically reduced cost to produce a DVD.

If you undercut retailers by offering a digital version at a reduced price, they often refuse to sell your product in protest and you miss out on a whole bunch of sales.

because they want to take your money, and you will give it to them if you want to possess the product in question.

Steam is good. I like steam. I think the system they have set up is great at combating piracy, and the fact that they are able to experiment with a wide range of pricing options for everything to find what really works is great.

because business
no, because physical packaging costs next to nothing
dammit, i want dvds for 3c each! the physical product is the only part that's expensive! the marketing, production costs, distribution, and recompense for the creatives working on it are all expenses that should be borne by the studios!

I saw a guy nearby at campus once, practicing with a unicycle while I was practicing ocarina.
After a while I started playing a circus tune, and he had a good laugh when he caught on to what I was doing.
