Cause and Effect of Piracy

So I tried to get onto bioshock 2 to kill some time. Unfortunately, the constant updates that windows live insisted on me installing before I played the game made short work of that. Now the program doesn't even start up. In addition, I can't uninstall WL as it is required to play the game. It's annoying crap like this that reminds me of one of the second main reasons that people steal games, movies, any type of media; DRM. While most agree the main reason people download media is less than noble, few seem to really dwell on the other factor that keep sites like pirate bay or iso hunt up and running.
While having some form of DRM is expected, developers seems to be getting more and more extreme. Ubisofts most recent DRM, for example, requires a constant internet connection in order to play its games. Certain games affiliated with Microsoft use Windows Live which, as mentioned before, has some very frustrating "features" which make most men (like myself) repeatedly smash their foreheads into the nearest monitor and/or keyboard. Even indie games like Iron Grip: Warlord have had their share of DRM screw ups (in my case it was a faulty key system).
The newer forms of DRM punishes consumers who simply want to play the product they purchased. The frustrations from this unprovoked annoyance pushes honest consumers to download cracks or the whole game, movie, etc. all together. The presence of these new recruits helps provide a larger seeder base, from which other pirates distribute their media from. Essentially, the DRM that was once intended to prevent piracy, is actually now encouraging it.

99% of piracy is just because people want shit for free.

They blab on about DRM and whatnot but that's really just an excuse.

Does piracy hurt business as much as businesses say? No.

Does anyone do it for any reasons that are not entirely selfish? No.

Nothing about this is in any way new, either.

Console games don't really have this problem, do they?

I mean, to the degree and extent that PC games have it.

I don't think producers and publishers would spend the money and resources they do on anti-piracy solutions if they didn't have good reason to believe it costs them considerable amounts of money.

Also any individuals "reasons" are irrelevant. Piracy is stealing.

There is a big chunk of pirated software that goes to people who would never have bought the product in the first place, making its impact less than businesses say it is.

A thousand pirated copies of a work does not mean a thousand sales lost. Maybe like a hundred, maybe less.

A common rationalization that would not change the fact that those 1000 people all stole something.
