I went and tithed a couple of lutefisk. But then I died, so it is gone forever

I don't know much about what the benefits of tithing lutefisk are as I haven't managed to tithe any substantial amounts yet, but I'm pretty sure it's not worth tithing a couple at a time.

No, everything I've put on there has told me I can't use that item on there, and the anvil decays. I think I've been putting crafting items on there though so maybe I've got that wrong, I guess I should be putting weapons and armor on there?

Edit: OK yeah, I just tried with a sword and it worked fine. I iz dumb.

I forget what other skills you get down the astrology tree, but the first one is a buff that boosts your magic resist as well as necromantic and aetherial resists and has a chance to stun attackers.

    Oh, yeah. Equipment only.

Yeah the Anvil enhances weapons or armor with a random stat bonus (or penalty).

Also, once you hit a lutefisk tithe threshold (the lowest I've seen has been 20), the statue spits up a random artifact then crumbles.

I haven't gotten this far myself, but I saw on the games forums that deep down there are things that heavily damage your weapon if you hit them. So it may be advisable to bring some ranged weaponry.

oh thats pretty nice. It's very much like Viking Wizardry's first skill then.

    My current setup is:

    Swords
    Shield Bearer
    Berserker (maxed out)
    Master of Arms
    Psionics
    Perception
    Viking Wizardry

currently working on maxing shield bearer and master of arms. Psionics has been nice when you open a door with like 8 baddies behind it to put one or two to sleep before they can reach you

Well I think it remembers how many you tithe so it doesn't hurt to just throw them in there if you are there.

Also I'm sad because I was just doing really good, full inventory and was looking for the guy to sell stuff to and I died from a trap I kept accidentally walking over. That was silly. And I have permadeath on. I might want to turn it off soon and actually try to get somewhere

Permadeath is for the same sort of masochists who dug (dig?) hardcore mode in Diablo 2. No thank you.

So, swords, dual wield, berserk, vampire, assassin, perception, and astronomy feels overpowered.

I went Swords, Shields, Vampire, Assassin, Forge and I forget what else and it's pretty nice. Plus, I don't have to lug around food!

  • FyndirFyndir Registered User regular
    Permadeath is for men.

Being a vampire and not taking perception kind of sucks at first, if you get unlucky with not noticing a couple of traps you end up really badly hurt really fast.

Yeah I just sell all my food. I can't tell though if vampire heals you by a percentage of your attack. I have been assuming yes, so been trying to pump my attack as much as possible, hence berserk. But assassine with blackjack and astronomy tends to give you some nice frequent stuns to get free hits + healing off. If it isn't a percentage of your damage healed, then I think it would be better to pump defenses as high as possible.

Also tend to get vampire corpse heal asap as my first level up. Past that I have just been dying to traps whittling my health down mostly.

No, it's that we realize that dying in ridiculous ways is half the fun and also preserves the replayability of the game. If you cheat, then there's really no accomplishment in beating the game.

  • zucchinizucchini robothero pretty much amazingRegistered User regular
I wouldn't call it cheating. It's just easy mode.

Considering food doesn't sell for much, and you keep dying to traps, why sell your food? Use it!

Roguelikes traditionally have a "wizard" mode you can enable to turn off permadeath. It has always been considered cheating and in fact old school roguelikes will always mark your score as having cheated if you've done so. Now granted, this isn't an old school roguelike in many respects, but it really is cheating. It's just cheating that's included as an option in the game just like wizard mode.

Yeah, you can't call it a cheat if it's a box you check on the difficulty screen.

I tried to let Gaslamp Games know about this via twitter but after they asked other users via twitter if anyone else was having the problem, they seem to have dismissed it. #-O

Obviously I'm not saying you can't use the cheat, but plenty of games have cheat codes built into the game and it's still cheating. If that's how you want to play the game then go for it! I just think it makes the game less fun.

Yeah I haven't even played much, so it probably is more challenging in a fun way. It's hardly Diablo 2 where you might spent solid days of game time getting to 99 and then lose it to an accidental fire patch.

It isn't a problem with the game. It is a problem with steam itself. Try visiting another game's store page.

And like I said earlier, the work-around is to log out of steam on the browser, go to the game page and put the game in your cart, then log in when you try to buy it. It worked just fine for me earlier.

Also I'm not really too concerned that I'm playing the game wrong or whatever by enabling saving.

I just did like 6 or 7 permadeath runs and sure it was fun but now I want to try something different.

oh yeah no problems, I just grew up on the game genie method of cheating so I just thought unchecking that box was just easy mode.

Although funny enough, now that I turned off permadeath I have not died and I almost have the whole first level mapped out. Finally found the guy to sell all my junk to also.

Still no idea how to un-stack items though. Right clicking does not work. Basically I want to turn a lot of things into lutefisk but it only gives me one lutefisk if I put a stack of stuff in the cube

Okay I found a post on the forums regarding this
Yes there is currently one way to seperate stacks.
First you need to have a tool type that has more than 1 spot.
Tools are the things that you can use and create items with recipies.
An anvil is a tool with 4 spots, which makes seperating easy.

Select the stacked item you want form your inventory and click to put it into one of the spots inside the tool spots.
It will automatically only add ONE.You can do this on more spots to seperate it even further.
Put the stacked item you are holding back into the inventory,
then select the items that are in the tool spots and manually add them to your inventory into seperated boxes.
    Do not click SORT.
Does not work for Horadric Cube and the tools(Anvil, dispenser, etc) themselves.

    Voila.

Anyone know if you can disable the game launcher? I wanted to take a Steam screenshot but Shift+Tab wouldn't work. I think the launcher may have made it wonky.

oh damn. I just crafted like 15 fire bolts into a bunch of lutefisk using that method and it was fine. But I bet I could have sold the stack for a ton, considering how much he is selling them for.

Not too concerned though because I have a bunch of gold sitting around right now

Here's the deal with the Steam Overlay: We use WinGDI and DirectDraw, because we're a 2D game and we want to run everywhere. Unfortunately, Steam doesn't support Steam Overlay with these two fine pieces of (elderly) technology. We are working on a work-around, but it's going to take some time to put together and test.

In the mean time, if you want to take a screenshot, hit CTRL-G and it will dump one to your Save Games folder in Documents/Gaslamp Games/Dungeons of Dredmor.
