Perfect with the caveat that China actually went through hell for that amount of change. Talking about complete destruction of the imperial government, internal strife and the foreign occupation of its major cities and territories. Hopefully in the fictional world, history would be kinder

With no foreign analogues to deal with and only the four nations presumably working in pseudo-harmony, should be interesting. I don't doubt there will still have been nationalists etc though...

Huh, I wonder who's going to be using MMA. Maybe the anti-bender faction? I remember reading that they would use the chi blocking techniques, but beyond that I guess it would make sense for a citizen of a cosmopolitan place like Republic City to be a bit of a mutt when it comes to martial arts form.

Also, the inclusion of Tricking is awesome. The fights in this series are going to be flashy as hell and it's going to be really fun to watch.

From the city's design and the chase sequence featured in the trailer, I'm kind of hoping to see some parkour/freerunning action sequences. I friggin love freerunning "fights" like in Casino Royale.

I really like the metalbending cops.

Its interesting to think that Toph had a pretty huge effect on the world when she invented metalbending.

    Beats the zero earth bending.

But she wasn't born in the Earth kingdom, so that makes more sense.

    How so?

I expect he's trying to imply that someone from one of the Water Tribes, essentially born to water-bending, ought to be more likely to use it than either of the other two elements she may have learned along the way, especially her opposed element (fire).

Maybe its a stretch but the anti-bender movement sounds like it is based on the Taiping Rebellion (TL;DR anti establishment, religion driven civil war from 1850 to 1864), especially now that we have pictures of the main baddie brandishing "平" on his armor. Or the Boxer Rebellion (Another civil war from 1898 to 1901 coming from a bunch of people claiming spirit possessed magical invulnerability). A stretch.

I actually am not all that surprised. Air is ubiquitous, and fire can be created by firebenders. On the other hand, water and earth both require that their element be present in the immediate vicinity to be of much use. Katara tended to have those sacks of water with her all the time, so she could waterbend whenever she wanted to, but it looks like Korra doesn't have them. And in a city filled with metal, earthbenders who can't bend metal would be hard pressed to find what they need.

In short, I think she's probably firebending more out of necessity than anything else. If the city was built out of ice like the Northern Water Tribe, well then she'd probably be waterbending a lot more.

Katara learned to pull water vapor out of the air. Korra is the Avatar and was probably tutored much more extensively and rigorously than Katara as a waterbender, so it isn't a stretch to say that she could do the same thing.

Katara learned that trick from a crazy lady who became a master of the hidden ways of water-bending through absolute necessity. She was also a water-bending prodigy. There is nothing currently available to say whether a less gifted bender, even one who achieved traditional mastery, would ever learn the trick, and no more dry fire nation prisons to inspire them.
So unless Katara set to teaching everyone how to pull water from air like how Toph taught everyone who could to metal-bend, or it turns out that it was a known possibility that all water-masters eventually figure out, and remembering that Korra is a "properly trained" Avatar with no wacky adventures under her belt (yet), it's entirely plausible that Korra, despite having the potential and skill to do it, doesn't know how or that it's even possible.

Pulling water from the air/objects hasn't been shown to be a difficult technique. It's merely been a matter of benders realizing they could.

My excitment level has risen to extreme levels in the last 30 minutes since I checked this thread. Sure, people linked the trailer over the weekend, but seeing the pics and all the rest of the talk.. I don't think I've been this excited about a TV show coming back since Futurama.

So here's a question: The special edition of Book 1 came out to celebrate that which shall not be named, so I have this nice slipcover to go over my copy and a mini-version of a book I own. Is there -any- chance they'll do anything like that for Books 2 and 3, or should I just break down and buy the last 2 seasons?

The thought probably never occurred to Katara because she was raised on an ice patch. Not only was drawing water from the air unnecessary, but also exceedingly difficult, since the air around an ice patch would be extremely dry.

I can't imagine someone like Katara simply withholding that information from new waterbenders. I mean, would she have a reason to keep it secret?

Taking water from the air easily leads to taking water from plants and other life, and that is definitely not something Katara would want.

As someone who only watched the original after the whole thing was finished I am really really digging the fact that the characters at least look like older teens.

I loved the original show but I have to say it's refreshing to see some older protagonists.

Korra seems to be a bit more serious and to the point than Aang. It's entirely possible she prefers the aggressive firebending style over waterbending when fighting.
