Original Gameboy games...wow there's an oldie for ya...
I went to a local used goods store the other day, and found an original GAMEBOY for $3.00. Mint shape...not even the slightest scratch on the screen, the battery area is mint, and no yellowing whatsoever. I picked up a mint copy of Metroid 2 for it from a local used game store for $5.00 to make sure it works, and it works flawlessly. It seriously looks like it was just taken out of the box and time machined to that store.
Anyhow, onto the obvious question now...what games should I get? I remember having one back in the day, but don't remember the games I had except for Tetris.
Here's what I have now after an Ebay run...(can't wait for them to arrive)
Operation C (contra)
Tetris (obvious get due to the sheer nostalgia)
Metroid 2 (already had as stated above)
So what else for the one and only original handheld?
Kirby's Dream Land
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land
Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening
These games are 100% win, and also gold.
There was this bike racing game on Gameboy that I had way back when that was pretty fun. I don't remember what it was called though... it eventually got a GBA sequel, though.
If you've ever played Demon's Crest on SNES, you'll kind of have an idea what it's like.
Kirby's Dreamland 1 and 2, Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening... Hmm...
Also, Wario Land. To this day I think the original was the best in the series. (I also preferred it to Mario Land 1 and 2, though they were exceptional as well.)

Motocross Maniacs? That game was awesome.
This thread reminds me of my original Game Boy. I was like 8 or something and I saved up for a loooooooong time (maybe it wasn't very long, but that's what I remember) to afford the $80 package of awesomeness. When I finally got the money, I had my mom take me to the store and I bought it right then and there. Came with Tetris. Oh yeah, you know it. I kept it hidden in my room because I thought my brother would be jealous and try to play it without my permission.
Good times.
I bought a lot of games for it over the years (most of them crap, kids games) and then I eventually moved up to a Game Boy Pocket and then to a Game Boy Color. When I got the pocket, I gave the old brick system to my younger sister so she could play Donkey Kong Land 2 (her favorite!). And then when I got the Color, I gave her the pocket and she gave me back bricky. I had some cousins that didn't have any video games so I felt sorry for them and for Christmas I gave them the brick plus a bunch of my games that I didn't play anymore.
They were soooo excited! They played it all that day. And then a couple of weeks later, I found out that they sold it at a pawn shop for like $10. Thanks cousins!
Good times... good times.

Thanks guys for the gaming advice! I love me some Gameboy Zelda, Mario and Castlevania...so those will be my next purchases for sure. (I totally forgot about Link's Awakening...SO getting that)
I'd keep it as a collectible, myself, since all the later models of Game Boy (save for the Micro) will play the same games.
Anyway, good games...
-Tetris
-Super Mario Land
-Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
-Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
-Wario Land II(I think III was GBColor)
-Mega Man Xtreme
-Mega Man II
-Mega Man III
-Mega Man IV
-Mega Man V
-...maybe Mega Man in Dr. Wily's Revenge. I didn't like that one so much.
-Kid Icarus
-I've heard good things about Castlevania Legends
-Operation C is a decent portable Contra
-There's a Ninja Gaiden for it, not sure if it's very good, as it's more a copy of another non-NG game.
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of the Foot Clan
-The other TMNT games might be good.
-Donkey Kong '94
-Kirby's Dream Land
-Kirby's Dream Land 2
-Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (I think the Oracle games were GBC)
-Wizards and Warriors X might be good.
-Batman
-Donkey Kong Land
-Kid Dracula
-Game & Watch Gallery
-A Boy and His Blob

OH, I'll be babying it trust me. I'm ridiculousy careful with my electronics...I may even buy a plastic display case for it to keep it on my shelf like a museum so it'll be free from dust and stuff. I'm still gonna play it though from time to time.
Thinking of a case like this...they don't cost that much in that size...
It's getting much harder to find classic Gameboy games in my neck of the woods. Every once in a while GameCrazy has a 3 for $15 special, but most of the desireable games cost about $10-15.
I traded my Magic: the Gathering card collection for an old collection of Gameboy games. I'm still debating as to whether or not I won the trade, but it's the beginnings of a nice collection. (Besides... Those cards bottomed out in a terrifying way. Never again will I collect something that has "Collectible" in the label, as they are typically rendered useless by the droves that collect them.)
At any rate, I'm surprised to see a few of the titles I received in that trade on some of these lists. Makes me feel even better about the deal.
Edit: Also, this looks like a fairly comprehensive list of titles for the system, for anyone who could use a memory jog.
I only have a few original Gameboy games and I hadn't played them for a while, but they look much nicer on my Gameboy Player screen than the dingey little GBC thing. I traded in a few when I was younger, but my favourite I have now is Donkey Kong Land. It is good but the graphics are horrific, the sprites tear and flicker quite a bit. But I am gonna buy the sequels, mainly cos I like Donkey Kong games a bit too much.
But the other ones have already been mentioned countless times in this thread. I really need to pick up some of them though.

Mega Man 4 (Probably my favorite of the GB series)
Game+Watch Galleries (2 and 3 get my recommendations)
Double Dragon (somehow, the GB version is my favorite port)
Contra; Alien Wars (a MUCH more compitent port than the GBA version, acctually)
Donkey Kong (Classic in every sense of the word. Pretty long too)
Final Fantasy Adventure (Portable Secret of Mana for the win)
This was the game that i got with my origional game boy. Got the game plus the brick for 25 bucks and I was soooooo excited. Many Many good times with that thing. Mostly i remember playing pokemon blue laying around different parts of the house
pretty sure it {pokemon yellow} doesnt {need the GBC}
Indeed, it does not need a GBC. All Pokemon games prior to Crystal will play on anything that has Game Boy in its title. Except Micro, but nobody loves Micro anyway.

Catrap (interesting and challenging puzzle type game)
Now that I think about it, I can't remember many of the games I had for GB.
WarioLand 1-3!!!!!

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land

POKEMON YELLOW! THE GREATEST OF ALL POKEMONS! PIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIKA!
Nanoloop 1.3 is not a game, but perhaps the one single cartridge that gets the most of my attention. A tracker/weird synth for the gameboy.

Yeah, the place in my town has a ton of used GB games...most in great shape too, but are about $9.99 each.
Yes.
I recall it being pretty damn hard at times though. The four-eye tower boss... ugh.

While I agree with this statement, will it run on the original GameBoy, or does it require the GBC?
pretty sure it doesnt
Also
Both are AWESOME games.
Also there was a 'lolo' game, but good luck finding it.
You'll dig it.
