Ahh yes. The best part of many fighting platforms was the finishing move, or as Mortal Kombat as coined the phrase "Fatality."
Digging up some oldies out of the collection and going through to see what I can remember, I stumbled upon a classic: Eternal Champions. This game was awesome for it's time. The fighting system was a bit chunky but the graphics were good and the blood was nice.
The funny part is that that phrase is a mistranslation. What Lenneth says is "Sono mi ni kizare," ("They form I shall annihilate") but what they translated was "Sono mi ni kizame." But it's still funny that with all the Norse mythos that Tri-Ace fucked up and Enix fixed, that they'd simply mishear something. :P
Some of those EC fatalities got a nice 'WTF' from me.
I remember when MK had come out, and GamePro did a feature on the 16-bit ports of it versus Street Fighter II in a comparison feature. They gave the 'award' to Mortal Kombat because it had fatalities and Street Fighter II didn't. I lol'd.

Well then. Remind me never to be under a clown car that's been shot out of a cannon. Anymore.

Here's some clearer versions of Challenge from the Darkside's finishers (including the Cinekills, which are mostly lame anyway). You know, just in case you want to see your gratuitous gore in pixel-perfect accuracy.
I'm still amazed every time I see that Daigo clip. God damn.
And I'm glad that someone already linked Valkyrie Profile. Amazing finishing moves there. The quotes they have during their attacks are also incredible. "My path is strewn with corpses." Simple. And it comes from a man that shouts almost every word in his script, and carries a sword a good foot taller than him.
One of the characters also turns into a giant dragon for one of the most damaging attacks in the game. It's really surprising the first time you do it. "They say you should not speak unkindly of the dead, so I'll just say, 'Nice try.'" That's another great quote, especially since it's from the crazy, evil guy you've recruited.
Finishing off a match in CvS with Rock's Raging Storm and then getting to see his 'Geese's Power' victory pose is always awesome.

I never got a chance to see that since I could never pull off the controller movement for the Rising (or Raging, whatever) Storm. Though I got damn good at pulling off the Deadly Rave.

Geese's version was pretty hard to pull off, you sorta had to 'cheat' and waggle the controller a lot more than the move says you should. But Rock's version is a simple two scoops and punch, the standard command for most supers...
And Eternal Champions was a Sega game, that's why most people never really heard much about it.
That video really picks up after the guy falls down the pit of razer wire and axes.
Is it wrong that I was very dissapointed that the wolf at the 3:13 mark didn't take a crap on the guy after he ate his intestines? Kicking dirt? Come on, was this kiddy shit on a Nintendo system or something?

Geese version was never that hard provided you had a stick (you have to arc from the diagonal to the half circle and the arc it again the other diagonal and then it's easy), but then again I learned it back on SNK before it was ported to the Capcom side.
The only trick with Geese (on Capcom) is the sweep storm combo, which is very picky on when you pull it off. I find it only comes out (for me I'm sure better players can pull it off other ways) is to time the sweep the final down angle then hit punch right as you hit the kick, but release the punch later.
It's weird that this topic popped up, because I brought my Genesis + Sega CD over to my house last weekend, and showed all my housemates Eternal Champions CD for the first time.
The entire house is hooked. It's withstood the test of time better than a lot of other 2D fighters. It's combo system is still awesome.
My whole house got hooked when, during a fight in front of the circus, they accidentally triggered the over kill where the clown car falls on the player, and blood goes everywhere. After that, they played for a week straight trying to find all the over kills.
Then they stumbled upon a cinekill. They're playing it right now, in fact.
Can you regale us with any tales of hidden things cut from Eternal Champions, TSR?
Reminds me...I saw that bit about Valkyrie's mistranslated attack on GameFAQs, I was wondering if the person who mentioned it just read that same FAQ, or knew more about VP...

A little of column A, and a little of column B. I knew that the translation was off beforehand, but I had thought it was simply a different form of the verb. It's interesting because some of the characters are almost word for word translated even at the cost of making sense to a western audience (Nanami in particular), while others are nearly completely rewritten or had their original lines almost completely ignored. Lenneth just sort of ended up as some weird middle ground.
I only become really aware of it around the time of Silmeria's release though when the voices are a hell of a lot clearer and you're treated to 4 different VAs saying the same line for the Nibelung Valesti (well, plus Alicia's "Kore na no kitto wa" - "This is surely it").
In DBZ Hyper Dimension or whatever, you could do a, what they called "Desperation move" which was basically a fatality but you did it when you were inches from death.
Goku did tons of crazy crap, beat your opponent up, went SS3 and then created a giant spirit bomb.
I only had the cartridge version of Eternal Champions, but it was really cool. I never really figured out how to do the finishing moves, although I did accidentally knock somebody into the fan once.

Tell me about it. I played the Genesis version with my older brother when I was like... 9 or so. We got a couple of the finishers, like Trident's stage one where the vines/tentacles pull you underwater and the fan and the electrocuting sign. I have absolutely no idea it got this fucking violent. I love it.
You have to admire any fighting game that let's you fight a Senator.

Eternal Champions also has a really good story.
And yeah, like everyone who ever owned Challenge from the Darkside, I also took it everywhere to showcase the glory of the Overkills.
My favorite was the shark.
Not all the cinekills were lame. They each play off of the respective Champions' fears if I remember right.
In one, the Eternal Champion turns the pirate girl into water.
Oh, and Time Killers needs some love, if only because you can still fight after half of your limbs get chopped off.

Go to that video and skip to 3:13 and watch Goku fight Buu or whatever his name is. That's the move.
Pretty cool video too, I remember playing that game a ton.
I still think that may be the greatest DBZ game, in terms of gameplay quality.
I remember Vegeta's special move being crazy hard to pull off.
I love playing that game, it's one of those games me and my cousins would fight for hours, for the fact that your health bar was also your energy bar. So after we both beat the crap our of each other we would charge back up to full life and fight some more.
Ahhh yeah, I remember *running* to the store to get my copy of EC : CFTD for Sega CD back in the day! The first one had rocked, but it seemed unfinished....the second lived up past expectations. When your spending hours unlocking crap like chiuauas and snakes to fight with, you know you love the game. They also improved the HELL out of the combo system compared to the first, a lot of old moves didn't work because they didn't suck the opponent in, which they fixed for the sequel.
Heh, you know a games violent when the animated LOGO has a shark eating two of the characters on a raft, ending in a bloody limb close up in the water.

Man, I really wanna watch those now. Awesome video. I approve.
Nibelung Valesti!
(It shall be engraved upon your soul.)
Also, lots of finishers here in JAPANESE, but contains spoilers.
Let 'em eat fucking pineapples!
I am a freaking nerd.
*Arcade drops on the guy.*
FATALITY!
Wow he was just impaled on the Washington Monument.

And Silmeria had better ones anyway.

I love the way it wiggles around.
I have never even heard of this EC game. I mean, this shit is unbelieveable. Makes MK so tame and acceptable.
The one where the guy is ran through by a tree and you can see is entrails waggling - well, damn.

There should be more EC in every thread. My favorite fighting game growing up, actually.
Either way, I loled. I was expecting poop though.

Considering the shit they put IN there, I'd be amazed that they had anything left over.
I mean, you can fight as a fucking OWL, for chrissakes, and not a owl man, either, a regular ass owl.
