The American Jobs Act OR Stimulus 2: The Stimulating

edited September 2011 in Debate and/or Discourse
So tonight the President is giving a speech on jobs. It's at 7 PM Eastern (so as to not conflict with the NFL opener). General reports are that he will suggest a 450 billion dollar package of infrastructure, unemployment extension, payroll tax cut continuance and a few other things. At least they're calling it the American Jobs Act, which is a nice direct title. It's generally viewed as a speech that will kick off the 2012 campaign from the White House's side, because everyone understands that Congress will do nothing. Hell, the Republicans have already pre-emptively rejected it.

I will even predict foreordained reactions:

Republicans: We reject big government liberalism and think trying more of the same failed policies is an awful idea. We must try the policies that created the crisis instead!

Independents: What speech, when's football?

Democrats (realistic): It'll never pass, sigh. Maybe we should have showed up in 2010.

Democrats (idealistic): scenario A (Obama proposes something huge and idealistic) - he'll never get it through Congress, what a weak leader.
scenario B (Obama proposes roughly what the AP thinks he's proposing which is frankly bigger than I expected) - he pre-caved again, what a weak leader.

Here's a place to talk about the speech and not clutter up the primary thread.

The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.

I'll pay attention to the speech, and the predictable follow up camera whores afterwards, but I honestly have zero hope that anything will come of it but talk. Nothing will reach the president's desk to get signed.

I basically think the independents have this one right. Though I'll still be watching.

I think this speech will really tell us the type of Obama we're going to get going forward. He's either going to do one of three things.

1: Propose something bold he knows will Fix the problem but never pass in a Tea Party Congress.

2: Propose something conservative with some democratic ideas, which will then have those democratic ideas removed when congress drafts the bills. (He bought into the lies/sold out)

3: Knowing he can't pass anything through congress that will help jobs, Obama moves to play up legislation that will, as with his grand debt ceiling bargain, smoke out Republican hypocrisy over the jobs debate and illustrate that they do not want to help the country, only their Rich Donors.

    I think 1's a long shot, but I can at least hope for option 3, can't I?

I'm not even sure if I'm going to watch this one. I know what Obama is going to propose and I know what the reaction is going to be, so the Netflix movie that is coming seems more interesting (in that I want to start it on its return trip in the morning).

EDIT: The only thing I don't know is how much Obama is going to point out GOP hypocrisy. But I'm sure I can get that on the highlights.

If the White House does nothing else these next 13 months, they'll spend every waking moment trying to illustrate (with bright colored pictures if necessary) to both the Democratic base and Independents that there is a difference between him and the GOP and that its worth going out on election day and voting for his second term. Dudes gonna stay very close to the center and try to own it if possible.

I'm not expecting any surprises with this speech, nor do I expect tonight to make or break the President.

There will be some attacks on Congress. It sounds to me like they're planning a Truman '48 style campaign.

Unfortunately, owning the center means disappointing the left, while the right will be equally enraged no matter what he does because Limbaugh says he's a socialist Muslim Kenyan.

The White House's guests include the CEOs of American Express and GE.

I'm honestly questioning why I should even bother voting Democrat.

Should have done this shit in 2009.

They really only need to not be pure poison to the left. Honestly considering how fickle the left seems to be in this country I don't really feel bothered about being marginalized anyway.

This is the last hope for the President right here and I hope he knows that.

If his job plan isn't good enough, he can kiss a second term goodbye.

He could murder a puppy on camera, and I don't think it would be enough to guarantee a Perry/Romney victory.

Judging by last night's debate, he might earn Republican votes if he murdered a puppy.
