Hooking up my PS3 with sound

BucketmanBucketman Call meSkraggRegistered User regular
So I just got a PS3, horrary! Anyway all I have at my disposal is my PC monitor, it has HDMI in so picture is not an issue, but what about sound? So far the best looking thing I can find is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65pB1Zefsh8&feature=related (and it has awful music) but it seems like this would be a major oversite, plus don't you just hook HDMI up to a TV and get sound fine? Why not a monitor?

To clarify I have this monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236033

Thanks in advance

Sound should just go through the HDMI cable to your monitor. That's how I ran my setup for a few years.

If it's not working, could you just double check that:
1.) The *monitor* thinks that sound is coming through via HDMI (instead of through the 3.5mm jack)
2.) The PS3 is outputting sound through the HDMI cable (instead of, say, the optical output)

I can't at all seem to figure out how to get the monitor speakers to work. At all. Maybe if I run something into my audio in and headphones from the audio out thats built into the monitor?

Well I thought I found a way. I got a free pair of Turtle Beach PX21s at PAX east this last year, but my sisters dog chewed through half the cord. Guess which half, the part that would run audio from the ps3 to the head set. Still works on my PC though.

I think I just have to use the guide in that video, I already have the 2 male to 1 male connector. I just need the female female connector.

    Reset settings? http://support.asus.com/Troubleshooting/detail.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=13&m=MK241H&s=19&hashedid=7QeBdyp1ohixDvxq&os=&no=1766

The HDMI connection should work for putting sound to the monitor's speakers. Have you tried connecting headphones to the monitor?

Also check your PS3's audio settings: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/audiooutput.html

yeah tried headphones on the monitor, and resetting the settings, I just don't get sound out of them. Maybe they've just always been broke and I've never noticed.

I know the ps3 has the option to not send the audio through HDMI so you can instead send it out to an older receiver via the composite cables on a standard PS3 A/V cable. Should be under audio settings. When I first got my PS3 I didn't have a TV so I hooked it up through my asus vw266h monitor and the audio worked fine, so it should be either a settings or volume issue.

The setting I have it on now is the last one on the list, it has a picture of the red/white cable showing. I have those connected to a thing that makes them 1 connector, and that is put through my audio in on my monitor. I get nothing with volume up to 100. I think I'm just going to get a female female and use that.

Yeah I know a few people who used the Composite cable for audio on their older TVs that only had DVI.
