Starred upgrade means it also has visual change to your weapon. For example, one of the M4 upgrade gives you reflex sight. You can toggle the visual change on and off in the upgrade menu.
You can make the security guards cuff themselves when there is no assault in progress and hurt them enough (when they stagger) then press F.
When the difficulty says hard, they were not kidding. Goddamn Helicopter pilots and their terrible aim.

Find a Christmas present on any of the levels in multiplayer - take it and you will be given a Santa mask! Plus you will get the chance to be surprised later on...
Big features
Player drop-in ability in load-out and in-game!
You can now join an ongoing game! You will no longer be locked out of games just because they have already started or because you dropped out during play. Just rejoin and continue collecting those precious dollars and gems!
These are the rules: Players who are downed or in custody and drop out only to rejoin the same game will respawn in custody. Drop-in is disabled during the "point of no return" phase of the heist, as well as on the end screen.
Heavily improved fighting and acting by team AI and enemies
New features and fixes include:
• New events and enemy tactics on all levels
• Team and enemies now pick better cover and firing positions, and use more intelligent firing lanes for suppression and sniping
• Enemies now master additional acrobatic moves (such as dashes and slides) and they can fire at you while doing them!
• More cover moves for team AI and enemies
• Enemy AI move in tighter formations and coordinate better
• Team AI now keeps up with human players much better
• Smoother turn and aim on team AI, and reduced animation glitches on movements
• Better looking weapon recoils on team and enemies
• AI teammates now pick weapons that better suit the current combat situation
• Combat will now be more mid ranged and not run-in gun battles
• Team AI no longer has "ants in the pants" (they don't move around so much) when there are no enemies around

• Texture resolution setting "low" to "high"

There's a lot of good and some questionable in here. The difficulty feels way easier, a lot less cops spawned in general though bullets seemed to hit harder. Maybe cranking the difficulty up is going to be required to get that madness we love from Payday, but the point of entry seems an easier slope to get over. Also, Diamond Heist and Slaughterhouse are now playable on normal!
Also of special note is the Christmas themed achievement and the prize tied to it. Click the spoiler to see what you get, or else get your butt in game and grab a present!

Nice one, I've just realised ive never actually spent time in the menus just jumped into the game everytime :P

Origin is the exact same as my Steam, in case you're needing a Support or Assault in BF3.
What are your options with civilians? The only interactions I know of are yelling at them to hit the ground, and tying their hands together.
That's pretty much it. Civilians only purpose is to cost you money (by killing them, typically when they run into the middle of a hail of gunfire trying to escape) and to become hostages. You take hostages to trade away in the event that you or your comrades get taken into custody. Similar to freeing a 'survivor' in Left 4 Dead.
I wish hostages counted for more. Something like the amount of hostages you take affects how tough the assault rounds are. I also wish cops had to worry about killing hostages. Currently their bullets don't harm them which is silly, but there would probably be much less combat if the AI was worried about killing other AI.
edit: I only know of presents in the bank job and in slaughterhouse. In First World Bank the present is on the vault table inbetween the stacks of money. In Slaughterhouse the present is at the shipping container yard. It is as far right as you can go tucked into a little corner. I recommend doing the bank job to get the christmas achievement as it is the easiest.
