It was an era of obscenely luxurious maratime travel. And the consequences of increased firepower without corresponding mobility leading to attritional psychologically damaging warfare.

Hmm, no I cannot point out Denmark. I also can't name all 50 states off the top of my head either. I group them by "this sounds like a redneck state, this sounds like a New England state, this sounds like an abandoned state, this sounds like California" and group them accordingly.

Ap0 do you remember what the specific details of Howard's refugee policy were?

I was under the impression the cornerstone was that he said, outright, that no one arriving by boat was going to be allowed the possibility of being granted asylum.

Otherwise I can't see how the christ sending people to Nauru would actually deter anything.

As I understand it the policy was that boats would be diverted to Nauru in order to sidestep International Law regarding how claiming asylum worked (i.e. once you reach sovereign territory you claim asylum and they are obligated to process you according to a range of criteria) in combination with shrinking/modified where we counted the extent of our water (but only for the purposes of this process). As they would never reach our territory they would be in a limbo state wherein they were kept elsewhere indefinitely lacking most of the protections granted by the laws applying to asylum seekers.

They were also planning on updating this to include prison ships floating outside of our waters to augment this plan before it all came crashing down... for the duration of the election and subsequent loss of power for the Tories...

Or at least this is what I recall.

10 years experience is code word for "I'm lazy so don't apply unless you're serious about doing the work." It is surprisingly good at filtering resumes. Instead of a thousand you get a hundred.

2-3 years of experience in a professional setting is almost indistinguishable from 10 years.

    That's Summer Heights High

Chris Lily plays three people at a school - Jonah Takalua, Polynesian troublemaker; Mr 'G', drama teacher with delusions of talent and J'aime ...something, bitchy meangirl private school transfer student.

It also featured Toby, the guy with down syndrome and he was off the chain.

Well Moab covered from birth until he went up to Cambridge. The new one covers University up to the 90s (I think, not finished it yet).

Yes, the Howard government was repugnant. And they rode this populist vilification of boat people to election victory. They trotted it out to deflect no end of scandal and potential scandal.

During the actual election they released false information that the boat people were throwing their children overboard in order to force the navy to take everyone on board and back to Australia - something which was not only untrue but intentionally so. It poisoned the perception of refugees within the general populace perhaps irreparably.

They incarcerated children for the first 7 years of their lives and caused no end of distress and problems with those policies.

Now that Labor is in power the Liberals headed by Tony Abbott (once ironically the health minister for the Howard government) have fallen on the three pillars of their strategy once again - boat people, everything the government says, does or thinks is wrong and generally being as obstructive as possible.

Abbott is almost certain to be the next Prime Minister.
