The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
The Wii Virtual Console in Japan is set to add another two console selections to its lineup — the fighter friendly Neo Geo and the MSX. The Neo Geo is SNK's baby and home to King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Metal Slug, and various other masterpieces of the 2D gaming age. The MSX is of course Japan's early-80s attempt to standardize the world computer market. The effort didn't pan out despite brisk sales, but as a game platform it excelled, giving birth to such esteemed series as Metal Gear, Bomberman, Parodius, and Puyo Puyo.
Other than MSX titles Eggy and Aleste, no games have been specifically mentioned, and there are no rumblings currently of a European or American release of titles from either system. If I had to guess, I'd say there's a 50% chance for the Neo Geo titles showing up here, and not a chance in hell for the MSX.
I hate linking to Kotaku, but there it is. Finally. I could give a rats about the MSX, but I demand that the Neo Geo be available to American gamers as well.
Second demand? That you all buy Last Blade 2 the moment it is available. Do it.
Isn't the MSX the only home to the true sequel to the original Metal Gear? If so, that's a pretty neat addition (if we get it over here). Neo Geo stuff is huge news though - the day Samurai Shodown 2 hits the VC I'm calling in sick.
I can't imagine that they wouldn't bring the Neo Geo stuff over here, despite the lack of official announcement it seems like a given.

yes the MSX was home to the real sequel to Metal Gear 1. That is until Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence came out. hit had the MSX version of Metal Gear 1 and 2 on it.
The Neo Geo is huge news though as it still has a fairly large fan base in the US. I demand that they put Magician Lord on it when the launch it here!
Great, great news! I'm hoping the Sega CD follows suit.
Does anyone know how much data could you store on a Neo Geo cart? I know they held more than your standard Genesis or SNES cart, but I'm not sure by how much.

Well, you could have linked to Gamasutra, since we had it up before them

Shit loads, some of the carts are huge.
Keep in mind neo carts are the same as arcade carts, which in some cases hold as much as a CD ROM.
some games like Garou are huge,... clocking in at about 85 MB (683 Mbit) ... but an earlier game like (for example) Magician Lord is only 41Mbit, which means only about 5 MB. Smaller than Super Mario 64.
EDIT: Yeah.... just checked with a not-so-legal site. Rage of the Dragons is the biggest game I could find clocking in at 89.4MB.

Arcade is not limited to only neo-geo you are aware. STV-titan, atomiswave, naomi, and many others have used, or still do, ROM carts.
I was asserting that because the neo-geo is, at core, an arcade in a console, you can expect pretty massive cart sizes.

Uh...... this entire thread is about Neo Geo. In fact, everything you said above was about Neo Geo.
Anyhow, the Neo Geo arcade hardware and home hardware are nearly identical, as are the carts. So much so that you can get an adapter to play MVS carts on an AES console. They use the same resources (which is really what takes up the space.... sprites and sounds, not program code) on both AES and MVS carts.
And no matter which way you look at it, if we're talking Neo Geo (which we are) then we're talking maximum 90MB.
If this doesn't become available in the US it will be the dumbest move ever in the history of time and space.
I have an AES system and several games but this is fucking awesome. I don't understand how anyone who owns a few Neo Geo titles and therefore knows how awesome they are would have trouble caring about them being available for a much larger market for the first time.

Well, we need to phrase it to SNK this way: You can either sit back and make nothing as AES games go for over $200 routinely on eBay, or they can put them on the VC for $10 a pop and start raking in the dough.
Everyone should do that, they'll definitely answer. A while ago I emailed Ben Herman and got a response within five minutes, we then had a quick email conversation about the XBox ports and Baseball Stars. Surely they can't be too busy right now.

I'm aware of this, I own an MVS and an AES.
When he asked how big they get, I gave a broad generalization that arcade carts are much larger then SNES games and can get up into the range of CD ROMS (not all CD ROMS fill the entire CD).
Because based off my experience collecting arcade carts and PCB's that's been the case.
Where do you live and what time do you usually go to bed?
SNK fans never sleep.

I'd hate both of you - but those cartridges reminded me of how awesome the NEO GEO version of Super Dodgeball is and now my heart is incapable of hatred.
Eh, space isn't an issue with me really. I had a big 4 slot, then i sold that off and picked up the candy cab. The candy cab runs my neo and my cps-2 and cps-3 stuff now.
Guys, I just made a post about FLAMING MOD FIST for people who quoted tons of screenshots.
As an aside... comments like this would carry more weight if mods still had mod badges displayed. I've mentioned in the feedback thread... any chance of it happening?
EDIT: Just e-mailed SNK/Playmore through their normal e-mail address. Let's see how long it takes to respond.
Touche, my friend. In my defense, though... mine is smaller. I do believe I have perhaps the only counter-top Neo-Geo arcade unit in existence.
Oh, and Baseball Stars 2 is the best baseball game ever made. Who's with me?
I'm with you on Baseball Stars 2.
(But I'd have one helluva time adjusting to the buttons on your counter-top cab.)
Though I'd be ecstatic if they bring Neo Geo to the US VC, I'd hit the freakin' roof if they incorporate online play. Sadly, I doubt that's gonna happen.
I really, really want a home version of some of the Neo Geo games. Rage of the Dragons and Fatal Fury 3D are on the top of that list.
Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition did get a (horrible) PSX port. Interestingly New Power Instinct had several Rage of the Dragons characters in it as secret characters. They were removed for the PS2 port though and then Rage of the Dragons never got ported.

Uh no offense, but that tabletop neogeo isn't anything to brag about. The carts with the listed serials is whole 'nother matter. I do know they wiped out alot of carts serials for one reason or another. Of course some of what I have are reprogrammed MVS carts but they still work

2020 super baseball and Last resort. I have to say 2020 baseball is enjoyable from a comedy point of view. Landminds in the catchers fields and then 7th inning bullshit (those who played, know)

Last Resort's okay. I wish it had a bit more variety in the levels. And the last (or second to the last) boss made me yearn to be able to turn the ship around, a la Strato Fighter.
I like its novel spin on the R-Type-like pod, though.
Minus fighters, Magician Lord easily tops my list as far as Neo Geo games go. Despite some cheesy voice work, that game rocks. The music's top notch and the graphics hold up to this very day. But I have yet to finish it. (Cursed morphing frogs!!)

Actually no. Largest Neo Geo games are 155 MB big.
the largest ARCADE cart.
The neo-geo AES carts hold the same guts as the MVS carts, MVS carts are arcade carts. Some arcade carts do get up into the range of a CD ROM.
I should have been more specific as I was talking in general.
Getting new consoles added is a feature i never anticipated for the VC it would be amazing if it happened.
No,... they don't. They hold the same assets as the AES carts. The largest Neo Geo games are 716 Mbit, which is around 90 MB.
Most Neo Geo carts were 330Mbit models, which means up to (but not necessarily) 42 MB.

Grim, that is most definitely a sweet-looking rig. My folks have one of the humongous MVS machines that holds 6 games.
