I think the vast majority of Americans do not know what Dr. Who is and certainly not that specific Dr. Who
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
This one's the Doctor that was on PBS all the time back in the 80s.
Not that it reached a vast majority of Americans from there either, but he's still generally more well-known than the other pre-2005 Doctors. Appeared in more episodes than any other individual Doctor, and more episodes than the Fifth through Ninth combined.
I'm fairly certain that as his years have advanced, the lines have blurred and Tom Baker has forgotten that he isn't actually a Timelord. God bless his mad little heart.
Of course he dressed up as the 4th Doctor. The scarf is pretty iconic. Think of the alternatives. Who could wear a vegetable on their lapel with a straight face?
Anyone who says Peter Davison gets punched in the gobblewhompers.
I would love to see more strips featuring Doctor Who references. Maybe even one parodying the show seeing as they've parodied other shows and of course mainly video games.

Tom Baker is as sharp as a tack. He plays a doddery old buffoon for laughs whenever he's on panel shows or the like but if someone tries to treat him like he's a doddery old buffoon he is viper quick with an incisive comeback.
I had no idea what was going on here until I read Sabre's post.
I tried watching Dr. Who once and I could not get past the cheesy sets.
If you have BBC America, you need to give the "New Who" (the 9th, 10th, and 11th Doctors) a shot. There's nothing cheesy about the sets now and the plotlines are much more intelligent.
Oh, he isn't Professor Layton? I'd figured it was that.
It's the difference between a Top Hat and a Fedora....it's like saying Indiana Jones looks like.....some famous Top Hat wearing guy. LOL
I'm with Victory63--I'd absolutely love to see more Dr. Who strips! And I think a lot of people vastly underestimate the amount of Dr. Who fans in the States. My almost 8-year-old daughter has turned into full on Whovian in the last 6 months or so and has found other kids in her 2nd grade class that watch Who too, so if it's that pervasive in the grade school set, there has to be a fair amount of actual adults into it too.

First words out of my mouth was "Silly Gabe, he's Dr. Who".
I ♥ making awesome crafts! I ♥ my Cookie Brigaders!

Tycho is a man who was once known to wear a teabag on his nose.
Heh, yeah, I saw the scarf and instantly thought "Tom Baker!" then doh'd when I saw the sonic screwdriver and realised it was Dr Who specifically.
I'm not so surprised that they know the 4th Doctor, but I near lost my shit when Tycho referenced Rumpole of the Bailey in a podcast. 3:20 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62HV8vNGMUo
I knew it was a Dr. Who when he pulled out the sonic screwdriver, but I'm not really familiar with the doctors before the 9th. The 4th is the most iconic though of them and I realized it was him but not until the screwdriver.
David Tennant is my favorite of the new three. Christopher Eccleston second. Matt Smith I like, but I like the other two better.

I actually recognize that Doctor because of the Simpsons.

If one were to get into Dr. Who, what is a good place to start? Taking into account the cost of viewership and all - IE if I can get the old eps on netflix or Hulu without buying DVD box sets, I'd prefer that.

The newer seasons are easier to get your feet wet with, since they aren't dated aesthetically.
Christopher Eccleston -> David Tennant -> Matt Smith
Let's play a game: "ooooh weeee ooooooooo" is the song lyric at the bottom of the post. According to the alt text, it's Tycho's interpretation of the Doctor Who theme. How many other songs can we name that "ooooh weeee ooooooooo" would apply to?

edit: Where the hell is the delete button?
Instead, it's a more modern brand.
And I don't even watch Doctor Who nowadays. Caught up on a dozen or so episodes several months back and that's about it.

Woops, I messed up somewhere.
Ok good. I wasn't the only one.
I've seen one episode of Doctor Who, and it wasn't with this doctor.

I'll start: "Buddy Holly" by Weezer
