Let's play a game: "ooooh weeee ooooooooo" is the song lyric at the bottom of the post. According to the alt text, it's Tycho's interpretation of the Doctor Who theme. How many other songs can we name that "ooooh weeee ooooooooo" would apply to?

I'll start: "Buddy Holly" by Weezer

I'm not sure about earlier Who, but I know all the episodes starting with Christopher Eccleston and going through to at least the 1st season of Matt Smith are on Netflix watch instantly. And I think the BBC website has the latest episodes just a day or so after they air, because they'd prefer that to people torrenting it. Which is super awesome of them.

I've only seen the new series so far, but I want to watch the original. I just rented the first three episodes yesterday and plan to watch them tonight.

For anyone wanting to get into Doctor Who, I suggest starting with seasons 5 and 6 of the new series. The earlier seasons of the new series definitely have good episodes, but they also have the slitheens (which are awful and juvenile and should have fallen though a crack in time).

You can get season 1-5 of the newer Doctor Who series on Netflix. (The show went off the air for 15 years before starting up again in 2005). The effects/sets are less cheesy, and is overall much more recent.

While it is not a relaunch and stuff from the older series does carry over, the early seasons (mostly 1-2) reintroduce elements of what happened original series as-well as slowly relieving the events that happened between the end of the old series and the new. As such the new series would be a good place to start and from there you can go back and watch the older series if you find you like it.

I need links to this, because I don't get BBC America as part of my channel package and I haven't seen the episodes since "Let's Kill Hitler". The only way I have been able to keep up was through a friend who bought them on iTunes. Unless they only do this for the UK region, and not America. :(

Yeah, if you're not in the UK I don't think that works.

If you want to watch the newest episodes in the US you have to either:
    a) have BBC America,
    b) buy episodes on iTunes/Amazon,
    c) wait for it to come out on Netflix, or
    d) use less than legal means.

it's all about the triumph of intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism."

I must say that I, for one, hope Gabe remains unmoved by Tycho's efforts so that we at least have some sort of dam holding back a potential flood of Whocomics.

Don't get me wrong. I watched some of the "new" Who (the Eccleston season) back when it was on Sci-Fi Channel, after Battlestar Galactica, and it was perfectly alright. It's just that, well, I think even the most omnivorous of us pop-culture nerds usually have at least one or two properties and fandoms which we cannot help but be annoyed by (or perhaps actually take some pride in finding distasteful so that we can console ourselves with the idea that there is at least some limit to our geekiness).

For me, that property is Dr. Who.

In fairness, it is not even anything about the show itself as it is that in my experience with the devotees of the franchise I know personally (and nothing against any of you Whovians here), they...well, to be frank, they never fucking shut up about it. I have known people fanatical about virtually every major segment of the pop cultural geek continuum: Star Wars fans, Star Trek fans, anime fans, comic fans, etc. None (again, this is just my personal experience) are as fixatedly vocal as Dr. Who fans. And after a while it gets old.

All of this is to say that I personally would be unlikely to enjoy further Dr. Who-themed comics and so I hope that there aren't any. Of course, it doesn't help that I haven't though the (by my count) two Whocomics we have had so far were very funny apart from fan-appeal, but that's beside the point. But hey, that's just me, and if we are seeing the dawning of the age of Whocomics (which are the new LoLcomics which were the new WoWcomics), I know that there's a significant segment of the board population which will get a big kick out of it.

    From Gabe's newpost:
I was interested in Skylanders as soon as I heard about it. I love toys and the whole concept just seemed cool to me. With that said I was still surprised by the marketing assault I found at our local Toys “R” Us or TRU as those of us who used to work there called it. I took Gabe down there who is seven now and smack dab in the middle of what I imagine their target demographic to be. When he saw the wall of Skylanders toys and accessories he actually started drooling.

I have to say that in my time working at TRU, I can't actually recall seeing a child be so moved with lust for an item that it caused them to literally salivate. Slightly disturbing.

I was showing him the game last night and he said “this is League of Legends for kids”. I thought about it for a minute and fuck all if he isn’t exactly right. I think LOL is a much better comparison here. You buy the game and it comes with three Skylanders and the portal. You could theoretically play it with just these figures and probably not have a terrible experience. In LOL there is nothing saying you can’t just play with the free heroes each week. You don’t have to buy all the other heroes.

It's not a very accurate comparison. With LoL you certainly do not have to buy all the other characters, but you can, FOR FREE! It's completely possible to acquire every single LoL character, and all the runes you could ever need without ever paying a single penny, aside from your ISP bill. Also LoL gives you more than triple the characters to try out for free every week. I have 3 LoL characters unlocked and I'm only level 10, I've played maybe about 50 matches total. While some of the skins look pretty neat, I certainly am not ever going to pay any actual currency for virtual clothing, and that's the only real thing you ever need to spend real money to get in LoL.

Skylanders requires a game purchase, level purcahses, AND character purchases beyond your initial 3....

The difference between paying for how the characters look and paying for being able to use them at all is quite large to me. I really do see this more like a pokemon action adventure game. They've just limited the collecting from hundreds down quite a bit, and made you have to buy them rather than earn them. Seems like a bad lesson for kids too. Don't earn your rewards, just earn money, and buy them.

He's considered more of an alternate incarnation rather than a main Doctor. A what-if as you could say.

Also David Warner who played Ed Dillinger and the Master Control Program in "Tron" played an alternate incarnation of the Third Doctor where instead of being trapped on 1970s earth, he lands in 1997 and then travels with the Brigadier.

There has been a number of Doctor Who video games since the 80s to present, however most of them have been bad or so-so.
However the current episodic graphic adventure point-and-click game "Doctor Who: The Adventure Games" has been pretty decent and is soon to start its second series of another 4 episodes. The series is developed by Sumo Digital and although American residents have to pay for them, UK residents get them for free with sadly Australia missing out on all the action.

Well like mentioned before, you might want to start with the new series from 2005 to present.

Or you could even have a glimpse of the 1996 TV movie which is also part of the main continuity. Luckily someone has uploaded on YouTube in parts:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdssdH_uOto

Other shows which might be comparable to Doctor Who but not fully are Quantum Leap or The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

If you're considering watching the classic series however only want to keep to specific stories then here are a couple good/great ones:
    *Talons of Weng-Chiang
    *Tomb of the Cybermen
    *The Aztecs
    *The Caves of Androzani
    *The Visitation
    *The Chase
    *Pyramids of Mars
    *The Time Meddler
    *Ressurection of the Daleks
    *The Robots of Death
    *The Seeds of Death
    *Attack of the Cybermen
    *The Curse of Fenric
however if you'd like to watch the show from the very begining (1963) to the TV movie (1996) then GOOD ON YOU :D

I watch doctor who for several reasons:

    1. It's fairly unconsistant quality, but when it more often provides a good time. The show is overall quite good and some fairly standout moments.
    2. It has a fairly low chance of cancelation as well as it cycles characters out and in, making you quite unsure on who'll live.
    3. The britishness of the whole thing is quite fun.
    4. I enjoy the "doctor" as a character. An immortal being forever traveling in loneliness that travels to earth to find someone to be friends with (maybe more). He doesn't take a companion since they are fun/smart to be around (quite honestly they are often annoying) but more to prevent the loneliness to transform the doctor to some monster.

Haven't watched the old shows though, but would like to one day.

A bunch of the old stuff is also available on Netflix streaming. Clicking the top entry in a search for "Doctor Who" will get you the 2005-current TV series with 5 out of 6 seasons, but the others they currently have up:

    Second (Patrick Troughton):

    • The Green Death

    • The Ribos Operation
    • Pyramids of Mars
    • The City of Death
    • The Pirate Planet
    • Horror of Fang Rock
    • The Androids of Tara

There are some standout episodes of the classic series that certainly contribute (although not essential) to the lore of Doctor Who through the revived series.
    • An Unearthly Child (First episode which aired in 1963)
    • Tomb of the Cybermen (While not the first cyberman story, it is a great episode that we're lucky to have still exist and is a prime example of Patrick Troughton's 2nd Doctor)
    • Genesis of the Daleks (One of, if not the best story of the classic series. Introduces Davros and fills in a substantial amount of lore surrounding the Daleks.)
    • City of Death (The height of Douglas Adams' involvement in the series)
    • The Five Doctors (Not only features all five incarnations to this point (although Tom Baker's 4th is a technicality) but is also a great story)
    • Remembrance of the Daleks (Final dalek story of the classic series and certainly a highlight of Doctor Who in the 1980's)

  • Victory63Victory63 Registered User regular
[*]City of Death (The height of Douglas Adams' involvement in the series)

Of course the height but it wasn't all that he contributed to the series.
He was the script editor for the Seventeenth season (Destiny of the Daleks, City of Death, The Creature from the Pit, Nightmare of Eden, The Horns of Nimon, Shada) as well as writing the stories "The Pirate Planet" and "Shada". Although filming of Shada hadn't been completed (although still counted as part of the main continuity), it was later released on VHS and also later adapted into an Eighth Doctor adventure (which is also strangely counted as part of the main continuity) with primitive animation.

He also wrote a script for an idea of a Doctor Who film titled "Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen" which of cousre wasn't produced.

At the very least, all Who fans should watch City of Death. It's absolutely rollicking, and even if you don't know the Fourth Doctor when you start, you'll know him when you're finished.

Classic Who is hit or miss, but there are a lot of blogs and articles that go through and sort out the good from the bad, which makes watching all the more enjoyable. And since the serials usually stand independently of each other (usually, unless there's a series long arc), you can watch a few episodes here and there and have a good time and get to know some old (new?) Doctors with relatively little pain.
