The first pic I posted was done using Painter. The second was a sketch I scanned and traced over and cleaned up in OpenCanvas, then tweaked the proportions in Photoshop, then threw it back into OC to colour in.
Painter came with my Wacom, and OpenCanvas version 1 is available for free. The skills take years of practice however. >_>

looks like the only difference between that and the good people is inking and coloring, which you could still do
not that I know anything about drawing but don't denigrate yourself, it looks pretty good
