PS3: "I'm no longer a wii"

The gist of it is, that PS3 will no longer have motion sensing and BC will be limited(the limited BC was already in another thread, but the motion sensing is new) I think this is good news, this means that the price for PS3 will drop significantly.

*chortle*

EDIT: Actually it looks like they may have misread as the press release didn't say anything about this, but knowing Sony...

So.... we're paying MORE for a nerfed PS3.

    Ridiculous.

Edit: hang on, he says the motion sensitive stuff is gone, but doesn't quote any sources for it.

I guess that explains what happened with Warhawk.

I think the only way people won't go apeshit over this is if they bring back rumble. Remember they said something about "rumble is old, tilt is new" around E3? What will they have if they drop the tilt?

Sweet Jeebus. I can't believe it. I didn't think Sony could fuck up harder then it has, but wow. Four months from launch and they're backpedaling on their console features already. They must be hemorrhaging massive amounts of cash if they're doing this.

GG Sony, you've managed to out do yourself.

This was just added today and I've read on a few other sites about the press release(though none of them said anything about the gimped motion sensing) still looking for a back-up source.

But that sites been pretty reliable in the past.

Dropping sixaxis just... doesn't make sense.

Controllers are made the same for all regions. If its dropped from PAL, it's dropped everywhere. And the latest news from the spiderman 3 game is the use of sixaxis in some exclusive PS3 hoverboard content.

The PS2 playback being nerfed though - there's many sources from that, uncluding an interview with a sony guy: yahoo news

edit: ah, the official press release. This made me lol:
Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology.

Man, I love how this is pretty much exactly what microsoft said re: xbox360, and sony chastised them for it. "True backward compatibility" was supposed to be one of the big advantages of the PS3.

Well, that's a relief. I really want to know where Tomshardware got that idea though; they're usually pretty reliable...

As for the Press Release, it doesn't mention a lack of motion sensing, but the choice of words in some places is intriguing, eg:
...compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation® (PS) titles and a limited range of PlayStation®2 (PS2) titles.
    (Emphasis mine.)
What does that mean exactly? I really would like to know if that means "every PS game we can remember making and every PS2 game you'd actually wan t to play" or "80% of every PS game ever and 50% of PS2 games, only not any of the ones you actually own"

Why is it you guys think it will be only good games that are backward compatible for PS3? Don't you remember when the xbox360 could play barbie horse adventure but NOT pyschonauts?

The games that work will be the highest sellers and the ones which used the same or similar engines. Don't expect the unique minor selling games we enjoy to be the top of the list to be emulated for a while.

It means that the PS1 backwards compatibility is hardware based like it was in the PS2, but some games may still have trouble due to the different disc read speeds and save-system access and whatnot. PS2 emulation will be software based like it is on the 360, so it will be on a per-game/per-feature basis.

That doesn't make any sense. For them to be doing hardware PS1 emulation and not hardware PS2 emulation, they'd have to have gone and produced a bunch of outdated PS1 chips just so they can stick them inside the PS3. That'd be a really stupid thing to do considering PS2s are still being produced and have a PS1 chip inside them already.

The more likely meaning is that they simply have got a better PS1 software emulator written than a PS2 software emulator, compatibility-wise. They've probably been working on the code for a PS1 emulator for years longer than they have their PS2 emulator, so it's probably the case.

The PSone chipset might be used for sound on the PS3. I'm not fully sure but many PS2 titles used the PSone chipset for sound so it might be a standard on the PS3. Its still a bad idea to remove the PS2 chipset... if its anything like the 360 less then half of my games will be supported.

I can see why Sony'd remove the emotion engine and going the software emulation route. It can be constantly upgrade to the point where most PS2 titles will work.

However, removing the motion controls, I highly doubt it.
I remember reading that Factor 5's Lair depens heavily on it. So it wouldn't be playable on a PAL machine or they'd have to rework large parts of the game for a PAL release.
