Unfortunately, it was attached to an awful story and shitty actors.
Most movies just have 3D tacked on as a way to boost ticket prices, or they use it cheaply by having shit fly out of the screen.
I can't imagine they would do either with the Hobbit. Done properly, it can add a bunch of depth to the scene and look great.
It is rarely done properly, which kind of seems like it will be the death of the technology.
