Game On: Diplomacy

Seeing Orikaehshasdighstahtae's thread about Dystopia has inspired me. It has brought back wistful memories of playing games of Diplomacy in the lobby of my dorm with a group of people and a pile of pizza. Good times were had.

This is Diplomacy:

diplomacy.jpg

It is played on a map like this:

Diplomacy%20Map.JPG

There are many variations of the map, but that is the standard one.

The game is very simple: 7 people representing various European countries in the 1400's (I think? Anyone know for sure) vie for world domination. Unlike Risk, however, this game requires an immense amount of strategy and finesses rather than pure luck. The core of the game is taking over countries that have supply centers; more supply centers means more armies you can build up.

Fighting is very simple. You have to have more armies bordering a country than the other guy. For example, say you have 1 army in France, and your opponent has an army in Spain. If you try try to attack Spain, your armies will "bounce" and nothing will happen. Now if you take 2 armies bordering Spain and attack it, you can successfully take over Spain. That simple.

Where it gets interesting is in the ordering/negotiating phase. Between each turn of the game, the players all give their units specific orders, such as "Army number one moves into Germany." During this phase, you are free to talk to other countries as much as you'd like and try to get their support to take over other countries. This is where the finesse comes in. Now, when making negotiations, you have to be careful. Players are free to back out of agreements they make with others, making backstabbing and treachery a normal and oh so fun part of the game.

I've been looking around for some free online versions of the game and haven't come up with much. Any other experiences Diplomacy players know of any?

And of course, does anyone want to play? Don't just say sure and then back out after. This game can take quite a while to finish (we're talking weeks here) online. There is room for 7 people, maybe more if a map that can support more can be found.

Someone play.

I've come out of lurking for this. If you can find an online version, I am so in. Maybe do it over Email, so like we host the board as it is on day X, then we we decide it's time to act, email everyone troop movements, and update the map?

The hard part would be getting people to email all at the same time, unless we had like some way to delay the other players from knowing about what your move is until they had submitted theirs as well.

Having someone run the game who isn't actually playing might solve that.

We could call this entity a "Diplomacy Master"

we could even turn that into an acronym because its too many syllables.
    "DM" for short

    This is a revolutionary idea!

There was a game of Diplomacy in Of Dice and Men awhile ago, I'm pretty sure the thread is gone now though. You might ask there how they handled it though.

Even if you're using RealPolitik, you're gonna need someone to take people's orders and plug them in, and update the map.

Ok. Everybody should get jDip, to test out their moves. I will randomize countries right now. Done.

Alright, now, a few questions I have for you.
    1. Should I reveal who is who beforehand and play via PM on the forum, or should we use gmail addresses (1 per country), so you don't know the forum name of each country?
    2. Should we have one move per day?
    3. When should we start?

I don't know about others, but one move per day seems a little too much for me. I've been really busy lately and it isn't easing up any time soon. Maybe once every 2 days? And I like the idea of using the Gmail addresses so we have some form of anonymity.

    England.padip@gmail.com
    France.padip@gmail.com

etc. You can set them all up to forward everything to your account so you can watch what's going on (right now they forward everything to me, so you'll want to switch that). I'm PMing you the passwords now.

Ok, I'm assuming you didn't PM everybody the passwords, so I'll PM everybody their country, email address, and password.

Since RBB knows all the passwords, I suggest you change yours, but that's up to you.

Email me at thor2488@gmail.com by 12 midnight EST on whatever night your orders are due. I'm thinking the first set of orders could be due this Friday, to give you guys a few days to think and to come up with some strategies/friends/enemies. And to get used to the rules, for newcomers.

tl;dr I am PMing you your email and password. First orders are due this Friday, midnight EST. Try to send it in a format I can understand.

I've been reading some strategies and a good deal of literature about the game. This is going to be a good time. Good luck guys. May the best dictator win.
