Double-Extra Fine

Does this change the game? Only insofar as Tim Schafer is making it this time.

You mean... I'll never get to play Plant vs. Zombie?

You realize he is just going to plop some art on top of a story and let you click on it. Then laugh all the way to his $2 million payday.

As an indie developer desperately trying to manifest money out of thin air for the last few years, Kickstarter and the like seemed like a great option for getting things off the ground. If "real" developers (with, you know... actual buildings to work in rather than bedrooms, basements and garages) start getting funded this way, serious thunder will be stolen from people trying to gain momentum through these types of sites.

On the other hand, it's an awesome way for fans of companies to fund the projects they want to see get made without big scary executives getting in the way and telling them to make the "safe" games.

    I am torn.

So, sort of like how we felt when people like Lisa-goddamn-Kudrow started getting nominated at "internet video" award shows because they had appeared in web shows.

    I feel your pain.

Are there parallels to be made to world-class athletes competing in the special olympics?

    ...not that I'm special.

Maybe more like Metallica competing in Battle of the Bands

Yeah, that's definitely more accurate. And less insulting.
