From the developers of Rift, Trion has released a sci-fi MMOFPS, Defiance, on PC, PS3 as well as the Xbox 360 - tying them all into the upcoming SyFy science-fiction TV-series by the same name. In addition to the events of the show influencing the game, there's a chance that what you do in the game might affect the show as well.

J7NKD9e.png

In the world of Defiance you play the role of an Ark Hunter, a specialist in survival, combat and tracking who braves dangerous frontiers to locate and retrieve lost relics of alien or advanced origins in return for great financial rewards. Currently you can play as either Human or Irathient ark hunters, but more playable races are confirmed (one of which will be in the DLC season pass)

RYKAKFz.png

Wreckage from the Votan ships that exploded in space periodically falls to Earth. These meteor-like fragments usually contain rare and valuable alien technology. While Small arkfalls can be tackled by a brave Ark Hunter or two and go unnoticed by everyone else, Major arkfalls are impossible to ignore as they blacken the skies, turning the surroundings into a violent torrent of debris. As an Ark Hunter’s EGO sounds the alert, a massive section of arkfall impacts the land. Filled with arktech wonders and/or rare resources, these large arkfalls attract a horde of beasts, who are often in turn dwarfed by a massive guardian of the species, intent on claiming the arkfall for themselves. Only an army of powerful Ark Hunters can hope to stand against the monsters of a major arkfall and live to claim the glory and rare rewards found within.

177l5dP.png

Guided by the celebrity scientist Karl Von Bach, a team of Ark Hunters embark on an Earth Republic-funded expedition to find a mysterious alien relic rumored to have been lost in the Bay Area. Unfortunately, they are not the only ones searching, and their ship is soon brought down by mysterious forces. Now the Ark Hunters must try to gather local information to find the artifact and thwart looming dangers that threaten all life in the Bay Area. In addition to the main missions following the main story line of the game, that is tied to the TV-series, you will as a player be able to engage in a number of side-missions as well as challenges with leaderboards and special rewards of their own.

JP8SDrT.png

In addition to being able to explore the missions, side missions, and challenges with your friends, you'll be able to shoot them up too if you so fancy. There's both instanced PVP as well as an ongoing world PVP called the "Shadow War".

Ark Hunters in the vicinity of certain arktech will receive mercenary contract invites to an ongoing Shadow War. Those who choose to sign up become what are known as Shadow Operatives, soldiers working in the “shadows” of Echelon, a private military corporation. These Shadow Operatives quickly fill the ranks of two teams. Teams are then directed by Echelon to converge on the fallen arktech, where they must battle to claim the prize.
To the winners go the spoils: Echelon credits to be used on special gear, weapons, and armor, as well as a ranking on the Echelon mercenary leaderboards.

1dDh8oF.png

Through the coures of the game you will recieve a number of EGO points. These can be spent on EGO powers, Blur/Cloak/Decoy/Overcharge, and a number of EGO perks which provide passive benefits. You don't need to go into this system blindly though, as Defiance fans have put together an EGO point calculator.

While I like the idea of having different media tie-ins and Trion seems to have done a pretty decent job with Rift, the thought that this game is tied to a series on the SyFy channel (I'm still bitter about them no longer being the SciFi channel... I mean... really?) doesn't necessarily seem like a good thing (unless the SyFy channel's gotten better over the past few years).

I'd like to be wrong about that, though (again, I like the idea of having a tie-in with with all sorts of different media/entertainment forms).

The TV series is probably going to be ass.

However, I would love to hear "Codename XXXny3hs0ld13rXXX has taken back an outpost from the aliens. Clearly he is a great soldier."

This game just begs to be taken hostage by Goonswarm or similar insane groups.

I can only imagine this going wrong: either the TV series will do it's own thing and the videogame is ignored or they stick to their idea and end up with a terrible story trying to tie in with whatever nonsense happens in a competitive videogame. Also: this game's market is super limited, SyFy might air in other countries as well, but it's always behind a paywall and they're always a bit later than the USA. I can't imagine anyone outside the USA even being interested in this.

This will not end well. It's not timed good in relation to other MMO releases coming sooner, and the tie in seems like a cheap gimmick that won't really translate well for the game even if the show is good. Not to mention Planetside 2, which is going to do this style of thing 10 times better and with nostalgia to back it up.

It seems like Trion are more than able to deliver cross-platform connectivity, but that won't happen because Microsoft won't allow for it:

I enjoyed Rift a lot. It had a lot of great things as well as a lot of flaws. Compared to most MMOs released these days (which are always compared to WoW) it is much better than average. However, I got into the alpha or beta of End of Nations (cannot remember which) and I just do not enjoy it. Granted it still isn't the final release, I think it's the concept and execution that does not appeal to me. I am going to keep an eye on the finished product to see how much it has improved.

With that being said, I'm interested in this game. Not a fan of the 3rd person part, so hopefully they'll make it first person as well. I just want to see how the game is executed. The concept interests me (and I don't even care about the TV show tie in), and as long as it is executed well, the game has a lot of potential. First impressions seem like a Starship Trooper MMO.

So are the PS3 and PC versions going to be on the same server then? Or because Microsoft won't allow the 360 to be interoperable, will they have separate servers? Or is the 360 version just scrapped then I guess?

Also: Anyone not using KBM will be at a massive disadvantage in this lol...

I havn't played End of Nations in a while, but I loved what I did play. Reminded me of the closest thing we're going to ever get to a new Myth game, with a greater focus on tactics and positioning instead of base-building and who can macro the best.

EDIT: Damnit, didn't notice the date/time stamps. Thought this was a new thread. *shakes fist at Echo*

Heh, it felt a bit jarring reading about the TV show. It's clear they designed the alien species so you'd have them to pick from in the game.

I'll test it out this weekend.

I actually have a lot of faith in Trion, they have proven that they can run a really competent MMO with Rift and that they can churn out new, free content super fast.
Both of these are qualities you need nowadays and I think Trion (together with Arena.Net) are one of the only developers who "get it".

Players in Defiance are classless, you gain XP and go up levels, but you do not pick a class, instead opting for choosing technology and weapons to suit your purpose.

    Sounds great to me.

This game seems like Tabula Rasa, only instead of it being a "shooting MMO" it is an "MMO shooter".
Also people who say "why do we need this,we got Planetside 2": This is a totally different beast. It's basically Borderlands/The Secret World mashed together. It's way more PvE than PvP focused.

I suspect it has PvP, but no guarantee here from me.

Regarding the show: The aliens all lived in a solar system. Their sun was going supernova so they all got on spaceships together and ran away. They found Earth. They stayed in orbit above Earth for 6 years, negotiating with the humans to let them stay. Their resources ran out so they said "fuck it, we're gonna die otherwise" and went to war with humanity.

*bang bang pew pew boom rattatatataatta boom boom*

During the war, alien ships that had terraforming technology on them were shot down by the humans.
This terraformed the planet ACCIDENTALLY and in horrible ways no one wanted.
So now aliens and humans fucked eachother AND the planet over and basically went "well fuck this shit, we better live together or we all die".

    And that's the plot.

Put me down as "Cautiously Optimistic".

I'm a sucker for Sci-fi, classless systems, and I did like what I saw of Rift.

The only thing I hope for is that taking place in the same "world/setting" is the only thing the TV and game have in common. I'd hate to see this be hamstrung by the TV show's plot and not being allowed to really expand past what the show has done.

I do not know if they have already said it wouldn't be, so until I hear otherwise I'll keep my fingers crossed.

This has the potential to be something I would play the crap out of depending on how they handle the TV tie in and such. It has all the trappings of things I enjoy built into it with such a large potential gotcha built in.

I do hope for the best though because a well executed 3rd person shooter mmo would actually be pretty fun.

After reviewing the videos, some things I'd like to see:

    - More weapons (sniper rifles, energy weapons, alien gimmick weapons, heavy ordinance, etc) and vehicles (maybe tanks, definitely some air, warthog style dunebuggies, an APC for groups).
    - More character synergy (My main gripe with Borderlands 2 and 1 was lack of interclass/character synergy; people combining gun types and abilities into GW2 style combo attacks). I'd like to see that here and as expanded as possible.
    - Any cover system (Planned or are they open to the idea)?
    - Dodge mechanics.
    - More examples of character customization options (races, faces, armors, etc).
    - Guild/Guild Equivalent customization (For example, guild emblems for armors and vehicles).
    - PvP (World PvP and/or BGs/Arenas. I saw in one video a Battlegrounds tab and what looked to be a 2 team deathmatch looking thing going on).
    - Explain more the relation between the game and the TV show. How will we influence it, how will it influence us? Will events in the show impact content drops? Are there going to be any game events running live/parallel to the show?
    - A bit more lore clarification; are the aliens our friends? Enemies? We seem to be friends with some and enemies with others. What factions exist? What is the Earth's status globally? Has the political landscape changed? The geography? Are there any aliens/alien ships left in orbit?
    - What is the game's financial model?

The game takes place around ruined San Francisco, the TV show around where St. Louis used to be.
In the first season of the show, characters might namedrop players if they were the first to solve a specific quest that kinda ties into the tv show.
They did state however that the second season (if it gets one) will receive a lot more impact from the game, because at the time of them filming it, the game will actually be live, compared to now where the series is done while the game hasn't even been out yet.
