I don't read xkdc because I was never into maths or found it easy so I don't always get it. But that is okay, I am sure lots of people who are into maths like it.

All the scientists and engineers that I know are interesting people with a hunger for knowledge

But hey maybe they scrawl little elitist doodles and chuckle at their own wit too

It might be because learning to play an instrument or how to cook or even a foreign language is FUN.

    Math is not.

I think what rubs people the wrong way about the most recent xkcd is the idea that someone wouldn't just say "I never use algebra in my real life and I forgot it the second I graduated; what a waste of time" to a friend, but angrily and condescendingly shout it at their high school math teacher years later like they were carrying a grudge all that time. He makes a good point, but he's writing a comic, so he tries create a humorous situation, and he just screws it up badly.

And the people who are mad about it obviously haven't met many math majors.

The better counter-argument is "yeah, well I actually do something with your physics/math (I'm an engineer so I'm somewhere left of the chemist on that chart), so shut up".

i was surprised to read this! it’s so sad that voting takes eight whole hours and you have to choose playing halo 4 or your country.

also halo 4 only exists for november 6, and on november 7 they destroy any unpurchased, unplayed copies

My degree allows me to understand where Randall's attitude comes from.

The modern origin of his attitude lies in the works of Bacon and Descartes, though it has roots as far back as Democritus, and even to Democritus' teacher, Leucippus.

    I don't wanna kill anybody. I don't like bullies. I don't care where they're from.

There's webcomics for art people, science people, literature people computer people, math peoples. However there's just a larger percentage of math and computer peoples on the intrawebs, so of course xkcd is going to be top of the list. It was also very funny for a good while. Sorta like how Simpsons was good from seasons 3 through 12. (or 10 depending on your point of view).
