I Guess I'm Okay?: The Movie Based on the Novel (The Great Gatsby thread)

In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since. Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, he told me, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had.

So Baz Lurhmann has been directing a film adaptation of The Great Gatsby for a little while now. And finally, the first of what I can assume can be many trailers, has been released

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgzhtUeER7o

This isn't the first of its kind, and I suspect it won't be the last by far. Previous we've had the original, silent film, with no existing prints of it available

The_Great_Gatsby_1926.jpg

Then the film from 1949

The-Great-Gatsby-Poster-C10126101.jpeg

Arguably the most famous of the bunch, the 1974 adaptation starring Robert Redford, followed

Great_gatsby_74.jpg

As well as all of these we've also been treated to a more modern version with G, only available on DVD in Spain, Iceland, and Hungary. Throughout it all every version has been faithful in their own ways, but all seem to miss the very essence of the Jazz Age, glorifying the loose morals and opulence of the wealthy during this period while ignoring the music and soul. Baz Lurhmann's adaptation looks like it may follow this tradition in stride.

I hope to be proven wrong, though! Lurhmann has a unique, some might say gaudy, style to all of his films and I'm not exactly a fan, but hopefully this movie turns out to be the perfect storm.

    Yeah

I mean I'm loving the use of colour, and the setting looks great despite the fact that it was all filmed locally here in Sydney, Australia. I even got to see part of the set they used across the street from my at my local park, and they nailed the aesthetic at the very least. I'm just not going to set my expectations any higher than they should be.

This is the first Baz Lurhmann film I am keen to see.

I was once dragged by my mother to see strictly ballroom. Which, as an eight year old I wittily reconstructed the title to strictly boring. My mother found this hilarious.

If I remember correctly that day I wanted to read an Enid Blyton book. It was the one with a parrot.

If they play it off like they did in terms of camp + era juxtaposition (the music in Moulin Rouge, setting for Romeo + Juliet) then I see this being a good movie that gets a shit box office performance.

If they try and play it straight well they've already fucked themselves by using Frank fucking Ocean as the first song in the trailer.

I am going to make two admissions in this thread that will probably offend some people

1: I have no idea what The Great Gatsby is even about. I have never seen nor read any version.

2: I love Baz Luhrman movies. Romeo+Juliet is one of my top five favourite movies.

I hadn't read it until last year Dave.

    You should though.

Julian is right when he says the book's strength lies in its depiction of the roaring twenties.

1: I have no idea what The Great Gatsby is even about. I have never seen nor read any version.

The Great Gatsby is about an outsider's perspective on the lewd, crude, and shameless era of the Jazz Age during the early 20th Century after the First World War. Surrounded by the opulence the narrator, Nick Carraway, is introduced to the man behind the local extravagance, Mr. Jay Gatsby. From there on the story becomes an exploration of Gatsby's slowly unveiling past, which can be seen as a commentary on the period and its lack of scruples, as well as Carraway's relationships with the people of New York.

I always thought Gatsby was supposed to be a goober who was pretending to be a badass. I don't really know if Leonardo diCaprio can be a goober pretending to be a badass.

Like I said in the youtube thread, friend of mine was an extra during one of the lavish dance sequences and they used Party Rock Anthem. I mean if it's done well, I can't complain, but goddammit that just makes me a little concerned.
