[Total War: Discussion] Total WAAAAAAAAGH WARHAMMER!
PA discussion thread for the Total War series by the Creative Assembly!
List of released Total War games:
Shogun/Mongol Invasion
Medieval/Viking Invasion
Rome/Barbarian Invasion
Medieval II/Kingdoms
Empire
Napoleon
Shogun II
Rome II
Attila
Warhammer
Very exciting. I don't think I was alone when I was hoping for them to cover new ground (though Total War: Ming probably would be unworkable from a scale point of view), but if they were going to retread old ground, this was the best way to go. Shogun already got an outstanding reboot and two very good expansions, so this is the way to go.

Fuck yea. This is the only Total War game I really got into. About time they returned to it.
I hope it isn't a hyper-focused map like Napoleon, or just around Italy/Western Europe/Balkan areas focusing super-hard on Rome. I can see them trying to make a Shogun move, where it is only Roman factions with same units and stuff. Hoping the map is equal to or larger than the original Rome: Total War, and the factions are just as diverse. Also bringing back the Seven Wonders! Oh, I missed them! My Empires were nothing if not lovers of culture. Culture through war.
My first act will be to run amok in Iberia as Carthage, then take the Greek City States and conquer Russia!
Day one purchase.
Edit: I'm also slightly worried about a new engine. They just perfected the current one. CA has this habit of 2 or 3 games per engine, with the former games always ending up as beta-tests of a sort for the perfected final game in the engine.
Mostly I just want them to keep the current reinforcement system and how easy it is to see/find stats and manage provinces.
Klash on
We don't even care... whether we care or not...

Fuck yeah, boys.
I have consistently loved and played the hell out of every Total War game. Easily my favorite series.

Well, the first Rome was on a new engine, and that turned out pretty well.
I was still kind of hoping they'd do something 19th-century after Fall of the Samurai
but this is aces

Ohhhhhh rrrrrrreally? I wonder if it will be as a-historical as the old RTW.
Hell I still play that, just have to use a good mod like Europa Barbarorum to make it bearable.
Nothing pisses me off like seeing the Egyptians forces wearing pharaoh headdresses and swinging kopeshes. Dammit, they were hellenic! The Ptolemies were Greek FFS!
Or lorica segmentata on early Roman troops AAARGH!

In short, the map is even larger than the original and on the engine side, they've created a new graphics engine (with particle effects and deferred lighting) and added a few other features (like mixed naval/land combat).
As I said in the Shogun 2 thread, I'm so stoked for this game. I can't fucking wait.

Hell to the fuckin' yes. I need to get my Malcolm McDowell on and fuck up some Greeks for making my ancestors lose Troy.

Holy shit total war Flash Gordan vs Ming the Merciless would be epic
Philippe about the tactical deployment of german Kradschützen during the battle of Kursk:
"I think I can comment on this because I used to live above the Baby Doll Lounge, a topless bar that was once frequented by bikers in lower Manhattan."
I never really got into Rome, so I'm glad to see Rome II is coming out. Really looking forward to it.
I wonder, though - my "biggest" issue with Medieval II was that all of my generals ended up turning into hard-drinking gay men. Does that tend to happen in Rome, too?

Well,
Unlike Medieval,
That would be very historical.

True, but the original Rome, compared to the latter games in the engine were bare bones. Same thing with Empire and even Napoleon, compared to Shogun 2. I don't mean to say "oh they're gonna ruin it with a new engine!", I just mean that I can't play Empire anymore because Shogun 2 was just so amazing that despite the 300 hours I have in Empire, I can't stand it's bare bones systems anymore. Basically, I was hoping they'd do Rome 2 the way they did Shogun 2, when they had everything down to a science.

Huzzah!
I'll second that complete lack of patience. Rome is still the best Total War game to me. It can be messy, but there is nothing like a world blanketed in a single faction-colour. It's like watching someone spill a dye over a map.

So the player’s choices become consequences that they will have to live with – and the trait system will make a return, too. But instead of focusing on the individual, here it’s being used to tie you more to your armies. Rather than a simple grouping of units with an attached general, armies will be Legions, and Legions can gain traits, depending on how they fight.
This is something that is extremely exciting for me. I really enjoyed Shogun 2's trait system for generals/agents, and with these guys making it accessable for literally every unit in the game is awesome.

I was wondering if they would do something like Lincoln: Total War (They would include Mexico, Canada, and Alaskan Russians to give variety between Union, Confeds, western settlers, and undecided states), Dynasty: Total War (China) before going back to an early franchise. Hmm, a Russian Civil War (Whites and Reds) would be fun too.
I hope they rebalance the difficulty on the historical missions, because the ones in Medieval II were just brutal. I would often use the same tactics and sometimes they would work flawlessly, and other times it would be a total route without the AI doing anything differently.
I could never win consistently at Agincourt, Arsurf or Otumba.

In Rome I recall the generals were more likely to end up as hard drinking, bloodthirsty men with anger issues. There was the time my patriarch wound up sliding further and further into mental sickness instead though.
While the experience system used for generals in Shogun 2 (and I believe Empire as well) is more balanced and predictable, I do miss some of the traits from the older way of doing things. It went way overboard at times but bringing back some of it would be nice. Crusader Kings has shown just how much you can do with the characters in a realm so I hope CA took note of how well received CK2 was. I do find the idea of the armies themselves having traits intriguing as well.

Rome was (rightly or wrongly) my favourite of the Total War series. Fuck yes!
However I did think Rome Total War was the best of the TW series so I am looking forward to version 2

I could cosplay the game box if you'd like. If you're buying it digitally, though, I don't know what we'd do.
Pretty much this. Rome was my first foray into the TW games, but Medieval II is by far my favorite.

SEGA, you gonna do right by me this time?

Either way, I'm pumped for this here game

2. The days my kids were born.
3. The day I married my wife.
In THAT order.
