Racists Gone Wild: Grocery Bagging And Freedom Of Religion Edition

From the derp heart of Texas, we have a tale of a racist claiming his demands to not have his groceries bagged by a black person are protected by freedom of religion.

No, it's not April 1st. And no drugs were involved in the writing of this post.

Kudos to the owner, though - his response of "the moment you insulted my employee like that, you were criminally trespassing, and I plan to file charges" is very awesome indeed.

I always love seeing stories about East Texas. They make us look so enlightened and sophisticated.

Wait, no, the opposite of all of that.

Thomas said his religious beliefs are based on Vedism, which he said encompasses Hinduism.

“Vedism translates into knowledge. I am not this way because I am ignorant. Ignorance is the enemy,” he said.

At the store I work at a customer got impatient with one of my cashiers because he was having a hard time getting an item to scan. His thought to motivate him? "Hurry up you fucking fag!". I stepped in, finished the order, gave the man his total and took his money. I then took him aside and quietly told him that he needed to apologize to my cashier or never shop at the store again.

Of course the company, which takes pride in its extreme LGBT friendliness (which is great), got a complaint from the asshole and I was reprimanded because of my rude behavior toward the guy, and we gave the guy a gift card for his "embarrassment."

    I fucking hate retail.

By the way, the town this happened in is home to the NFL's most famous Black head coach, Lovey Smith.

    I love this guy:
Thomas said. “It would be the same as if you asked that a congoid (a person from west/central Africa) not touch your food.”

Why yes it is. This racist thing is like this other racist thing, therefore neither are racist?

What's the maths here? Being Racist is negative, therefore 2 negatives are a positive?

fakeedit: Also, what the hell is wrong with his neck in that picture?

The picture's actually of Keith Langston, the store owner. While he's certainly not photogenic, his handling of the situation softens the blow to my faith in humanity.

One of my favorite parts was where it said the plaintiff filed a "nine-page, hand-written lawsuit." Between that and the quasi-eugenic horseshit this guy is spewing, it's good to know he's crazy in addition to being a run-of-the-mill racist prick.

I know it was bad of me to point that out, but it just looks weird to me, since he doesn't seem that fat.

I also like to point out it was a pleasant surprise that the store owner "fired" the customer, instead of the employee for "offending a customer's religion". Hope this turns out positive for the store owner, more people need to be rewarded for doing the right thing.

Oh, I thought you had confused the guy in the picture for the racist prick in question. He and his odd neck should continue to rock.

What really impresses me about the man is that Hawkins is a really "Texas" part of Texas. Both the local college and airport are owned by hardcore conservative ministry corporations. If there is a place where I would have expected a weak, vacillating response to this customer instead of the "No, fuck you" he deserves, it's Hawkins. But Mr. Langston came out swinging.

It probably doesn't hurt that the owner wasn't just admonishing a racist customer, but backing his own employee as well.

Which, bravo, dude. While West Texas is not, East Texas is definitely part of the Old South, and I'd wager this store's clientele is probably 50% Black or better.

Color me simultaneously disgusted and proud of my old neck of the woods.

It also helped that the customer cited a "foreign" religion instead of southern baptism or something.

The Southern Baptists just elected a black guy named Fred Luter be the president of the organization, so that wouldn't have flown very far either.

East Texas is very much a part of th eOld South, and it surprises me not a whit to see both sentiments in this article on display.

This time, Langston was there. He called police to serve Thomas a criminal trespass warning. While waiting for the police, an employee locked the doors, and the lawsuit claims Thomas was “unlawfully restrained.”

Technically, this is where he may have a leg to stand on. Depending on how the law is structured in TX or in that municipality, this action could be considered kidnapping.

In Texas, land of the "if they are in your property you can shoot them pretty much scot free"? The guy should be glad they didn't do a citizen's arrest on him.
