Welcome to the thread where we talk about movies.

The rules are astonishingly simple: talk about movies. Be interesting. When telling us about something you saw, give us more to talk about than "it ruled" or "it sucked." Be respectful of other people's opinions. Treat disagreement as an opportunity for learning.

The use of the word "pretentious" remains banned until further notice.

    Based on your post:

Best classic Bond: From Russia With Love*

    Worst: Thunderball (song, too)
*Special mention to the underappreciated sibling that goes coconuts over-the-top, You Only Live Twice. Any film with a volcano lair that has a working monorail deserves some sort of credit.

Mother of God Jaws looks amazing on BR. Never noticed the Mayors suit has anchors on it before. The attention they gave this transfer deserves some kind of award, and raises my excitement for the Indiana Jones BR release.

Saw this last night. I'd read earlier in Ebert's review that he hadn't understood the plot, which upset me. You're a movie critic! You watch a lot of movies! Shouldn't you be good at understanding plots? Just pay attention really hard! It's not difficult!

Then I saw it and didn't understand the plot.

    Which parts didn't you get?

    Quik'n'dirty rundown:
We start with what looks like a botched mission in which Mark Stong gets shot. This forces Control to retire and take his number 2, Smiley, with him. When it comes up there might be a mole in the group, Smiley gets brought in from the outside. After investigating he discovers that the betrayer is Mark Strong's ex-lover, Colin Firth, who betrayed him to get shot. The rest of the top guys were all duped by Firth into giving away intelligence secrets in exchange for Russian info which was mostly bunco, but the British so wanted to get back in good with the CIA they acted stupidly. Smiley takes over the role of Control. The end.

I actually read an online explanation this morning, which cleared everything up immensely. But my main problem while I was watching it was keeping all the characters straight. I think there's something about British movies with lots of people where I'm just going to get confused.

Some stuff I still don't quite get, even after reading the plot explanation:
Mostly I didn't understand Smiley's trap that caught the mole. How did he know the agent he questioned on the air strip wasn't the mole? Why did the three senior agents need to meet because of Taar's actions in Paris? How did Smiley know that it was the one single agent who would come to the safehouse that was the mole?

But again, most of my confusion at the time I was watching was more along the lines of: Who is this person? Why am I being shown this scene? Why does character X say he needs object Y? It's definitely more of a "mull it all over when you get home" type of movie, because some stuff just doesn't make immediate sense when you're shown it for the first time.

Wait, Mark Strong's and Colin Firth's characters were ex-lovers? How'd you pick up on that? So there were two secret gay relationships in this movie (the other being Benedict Cumberbatch and his boyfriend)?

That's a fair feeling. It is purposefully done in a way that doesn't ever repeat something or hold your hand, so yes, it can get confusing. How did Smiley know
it wasn't the guy at the airport? He didn't know. That's why they show the scene of him thinking juxtaposed with the switching train tracks. It's him rethinking everything and realizing then.

    It's not so explcit, but
the photo Firth takes of the two of them from Strong's place and the way he looks at Strong at the Christmas party. It's also why Strong is crying when he shoots him. Firth's bi.

    New thread smell!

There is apparently talk of an all female Expendables in the works, and that just kind of ruins the idea. Simply because there aren't that many action chicks out there. Maggie Q, Michelle Rodriguez, Yvonne Strahovski, Michelle Yeoh, Haywire lady, ?.

Do you drag out Brigitte Nielsen as the bad gal?

Could probably add Sigourney Weaver. She seemed to work pretty well in Paul and Cabin in the Woods as the evil government department head.

A smaller cast is fine with me. That'll give each character more depth, something which I thought was needed in the first Expendables. Haven't seen the second but reviews I've read confirm it's a continuing problem
enough that Jet Li is sidelined almost completely.
They should add Scarlett Johanssen to the cast, she's a promising new female action star. Jennifer Garner, as well.

I also wasn't able to follow it. On the other hand Ebert said he saw Kiss Kiss Bang Bang twice and wasn't able to follow it and I didn't have any trouble so that made me feel smart.

Cynthia Rothrock is getting back into movies. Gina Carano would probably be cast. Maybe Lucy Lawless and Pam Grier. Sigourney Weaver as the boss sounds about right.

I haven't seen better CGI dinosaurs yet. But I doubt it, Spielberg said he doesn't want to alter any more of his movies that way. I guess he learned the lesson Lucas won't; Don't fuck with the movie!

I'm no doubt setting myself up for disappointment by being so excited about Paranorman - a lot of the reviews are saying it's a bit lacking in the character/story department. But stop motion is so neat! And Laika movies are so gorgeous!

I saw Jurassic Park on the TV a few months back.

The CGI dinosaurs looked perfectly fine to me.

The model Velociraptors, on the other hand, weren't near as good as I remember. Very limited in what they could do.

I tried to watch Hijacked the other day and oh god my brain is now full of dumb.

Why on earth did they feel the need to add CGI blood splotches in gunfights?

And have them literally make splotch noises when people got shot?

After being subjected to fifteen minutes of this torture I turned it off.

And back to movie discussions, Albert Brooks was certainly different than I've ever seen him in Driver. He's gonna be defending his life again for that one (see what I did there?)

Driver is the Sylvester Stallone movie about CART racing.

    EDIT: nope, that's Driven.

Ah, Drive. Gosling was the Driver.

Interesting aside: Drive was based of a novel of the same name, and its sequel is called Driver.

So saw this in the last thread and felt a need to point it out buuut.

The sequel to Drive is actually called Driven.

    Agreeing with this.

Haven't been this challenged as a viewer since the time David Lynch realized that he was David Lynch, long since liberated from the traditional Hollywood system, and if he wanted to make a film filled with hot cars, even hotter lipstick lesbians, and layered, confusing dream sequences, then he had earned the right to.

Well, it's give and take. Fewer actors would help flush them out more and build better camaraderie, but for the most part my main issue with Expendables 1 was that it spent way too much time on character development.

For a silly all out action movie, it was incredibly slow and boring. Given what they're doing, I have no problem if the characters are one dimensional, especially since most of them are terrible actors and can't portray a real person anyways.

I had the opposite problem. Except for Statham, Lungren, Stallone and to a lesser degree Rourke they were all cardboard cut-outs. Not that those exceptions were anything special but they had the best character development and unique personalities to make them memorable.

    Agreed.

One dimensional characters don't appeal to me. They should have been written better since the 80's heroes they were supposed to be inspired by had more personality and quality in their movies then what I saw. Rourke, Stallone, Statham, Li, Crews and Lungren could have been enough to make a more interesting movie on their own without adding more numbers with inter-changeable characters. All that does is give them less screen time so they can't reach their full potential. Then there's their horrible names. They're supposed to be aliases but I expect better from Stallone. He won an Oscar for the screenplay for Rocky, after all.

    Good to hear!

This behind the scenes article is interesting. My first thought when I saw a Coraline trailer was "wow it looks a lot like CG". Well it turns out Laika characters are kind-of computer animated. Well not really, but each character has an absurd number of face plates that are switched out each frame - and the plates are designed with computers and then printed out with 3D printers. We're living in the future.
