When running, the quality of your offensive line is obviously determinative. Still, if you can't reliably run between the tackles for 3-4 yards on all pro, one of three things is happening: 1) you aren't running the plays as diagrammed. Not that you always have to hit the gap specified, but if you call a dive and you immediately try and bounce off tackle you'll probably not do so well. 2) The opposing D line is just way better than your O line. I dunno offhand which teams in this year's iteration have the worst run blocking lines, but if yours is awful and you're playing the ravens or something you will struggle. Football! 3) the CPU is stacking the line and you're just running into it. Correct solution here is to audible to a pass. I don't want to dive too deeply into explaining how to use formation audibles because I use the legacy audible controls and I'd probably just confuse you; best way to learn is to set the play clock to whatever the maximum time is (or turn it off, if you can?), then play a quick match and teach yourself all the audible controls.

For anyone that's interested, a play that works against the computer virtually all of the time (with just a little practice):
    1. Pick any formation that has a TE and one WR on the same side (there are a lot of them - I use the strong I out of the Pats playbook, but every playbook will have a bunch of formations like this). Shotgun or under center doesn't matter.

    2. Hot route the TE to a wheel route (right stick up on the PS3).

    3. If the corner on the WR is playing off, hot route the WR to a curl (left stick down). At the snap, keep your eyes on the safety and LBs on that side. If any of them rush over towards the sideline, look for the TE to come open deep down the middle (lead him a little inside). If no one rushes over, throw a bullet to the WR curl for ~12 easy yards.

    4. If the corner is playing the WR tight, hot route the WR to a streak. At the snap look for the TE. If it's a zone, look for the TE deep down the middle again. If it's man the TE will often have inside position and you can throw him open by throwing hard to the inside. ADVANCED MOVE: If the CB is playing the WR tight and it's zone, the WR will come free after a second and be wide open in the seam. Throw it hard, outside, and deep and it will often go the distance (assuming the WR is fast enough to outrun the safety). The trick is you have to throw it before you see the receiver to get it there before the safety covers, and if you misread the zone (and it's man instead) you'll often throw it right to the CB.

    5. Have a receiver from the other side running a slant or drag as a third option or last resort.

The CPU also has a lot of trouble adapting to bunch formations; any trips, bunch, etc formation in which the inside WR/TE runs to the deep middle (post, deep cross, seam route) works really well against most of their defensive alignments. Grab whatever one of these plays you like, then just hot route the outside receiver to a drag or a square in.

Congrats, you've just created a basic high/low read: if the defense is in anything but cover 3/4, the deeper route is likely to be open once the receiver passes the linebackers. If they are in cover three, just throw to the shorter crossing route and take the five or seven yards.

This is especially effective once you get used to using set packages to rotate your better receivers into the slot positions.

the other piece of basic passing advice I have is this: don't drop back too far. If you're in shotgun, the QB is already standing basically where he needs to be. From under center, don't drop back much further than shotgun distance.

The temptation is to drop seven to 10 yards back from the LoS: in addition to making your throws longer and thus harder to complete, it widens the angle your tackle has to keep the end out of, which will get you sacked (for a big loss, too.) Unless you're throwing a screen pass or you're a cheater who uses michael vick, you don't want to be dropping back a long way.

If there is a call for it I can lower the difficulty or adjust the sliders. I know we are all at different levels of play with this game so it will be hard to find a setting that everyone can agree on (too hard v too easy), but I'm sure we can make something work

This one is very, very important and a habit that I'm still working on getting rid of. I watched many a replay where I can see I completely fucked up the play by dropping back way too far.

I'm good with all-pro. I still struggle often, but I just need to play more. I've played on Pro and it felt too easy.

AllPro is fine with me too.

Some things bother me, DB's with stick em on their hands, run blocking seems way too easy...overall though it's a good balance.

also pump faking seems to be kind of hilariously effective in this iteration. It takes more time (animations) than in previous versions, but if you actually fake the safety one way then throw the other, sometimes you can get a receiver hilariously wide open

I ran for 222 yards with a 70~ overall RB (against 2nd stringers, but still) on these settings, while just trying to get through the dumb preseason game, so any lower seems like it'd be way too easy

    Did get picked twice though

yeah linebackers are still way too good in coverage, for the most part. I haven't played against the 49ers yet, but actual patrick willis will probably get like four INTs off me or something.

at least they don't intercept/bat passes blindly anymore, though

I saw Skip Bayless tweet that Tim Tebow had thrown 4 picks and "why is he even on the field??"
Was that a user played game, because I can believe it with these defenders (and Tebow's arm), and secondly,

Come on, Madden. Realism. Skip Bayless would find a way to defend a 4 pick Tebow game and you know it

PS3 to advance to preseason week 4 tonight. Seems most folks have their stuff done.

I think I'm going to start the season with a RB as my number two WR. Bengals wide-outs not named Green are kind of terrible. Speed 83? Who signed you, Slowby McWhiteyson?

Are there not some decent WR out there? In my league Im playing with friends I just lost percy harvin for 5 weeks and there are a decent amount of OK wideouts in free agency. TO, Chad Johnson, Lee Evans, The Other Steve Smith. They arent great, but they are decent.

I got Evans and Housh to replace Harvin, I figure combined they can do his job. Evans on 1st and 2nd down for his speed, Housh on 3rd for his route running and sure hands. I just have to figure out packages to successfully sub them.

Also, what is the rule for friends who arent members of PA? I have a buddy who would proabably love to get in on a more scheduled, active league with lots of teams. But I understand if we want to keep it in house. To be honest, he gets kinda upset sometimes when playing, so maybe I shouldn't inflict that upon anyone else :)

I tried doing you a favor by injuring David Carr in our preseason game but I only managed to knock him out for one quarter.

I have no problem with it, in principle. But, he would need to register here and be accessible through the forum, whether by post or PM. He would also need to be chill, or at least able to abide by the "Don't be a dick." rule. Otherwise, I leave it to your discretion.

If it's not complete then it'll just be simmed anyway, and at least in past version the commish could also tell the AI who would win. If this is possible, I would only do this if it was agreed between the 2 that it was a specific players fault for not getting the game in, such as not being around to play your game. In the regular season, I will also extend the advancement 1 day if it was agreed that the 2 teams would infact play and have a scheduled play time so let me know (By PM!) whats up if a game can get played after the deadline.

As for playoff games, I'll let as much time as needed pass to get a game played between 2 human controlled teams. Within reason, of course.

So I picked up the PS3 version of this the other day to play with a friend who lives on the other side of the US. I know almost nothing about balling feets and have played a grand total of 0.25 games of Madden 04 on the original xbox. My only other experience is Tecmo (NOT Super) Bowl for the NES.

Seriously is there like a 'Madden for Dummies' out there? Like I thought the career mode would be like pick a team and take them to the Super Bowl but it isn't, like, at all. I'm so completely confused.

Does that make it like playing a regular 'Pay Now!' exhibition game? Like I get to control all the players?

I'm at work so I can't just check on my own. But the first time I played a game with my created QB he only got to play for like 1 quarter then I just watched little colored bars until I found out I had lost.

what did the AI do? Cut a high 70 player while keeping several low 50's?

  • gundam470gundam470 Drunk Gorilla CaliforniaRegistered User regular
It cut my starting TE (bennett of the NYG because since he was injured his rating was low I guess?) but not a big deal since he kind of sucked in the game anyway and I didn't even bother to resign him. Then I check my depth chart and found I had 3 SS and 3 FS. I then found I only had 2 QBs on the roster. Then I saw I only had 5 WR but that's not too big of a deal. Nor was it too big of a deal that I only had one FB. Then I saw the game had literally swapped the starters from the left side of my OL with the right (so my startinbg LG was at RG and LT at RT and vice versa).

I don't know what the fuck the computer is thinking sometimes and this just the stuff I noticed after deciding to check my roster because my releasing Bennet was one of the stories on the front page.

    gorillaSig.jpg
  • Eat it You Nasty Pig.Eat it You Nasty Pig. tell homeland security 'we are the bomb'Registered User regular
weird things happen when you auto-reorder the depth chart (part of what it does when it cuts people, I assume.) It will start players at positions where they are rated highly, even if they aren't their natural positions. Sometimes this isn't bad (start an awesome LG at RG and a lesser LG at his natural position, whatever), and sometimes they're hilarious.

Yeah I could have definitely resigned Benett. Another thing I have noticed is that the game will consistently have the punter do my opening kickoffs. Maybe it's just a preseason thing, but I think it's weird as hell. This is aside from the issue that was mentioned before where your kicker will become your punter when it comes time to get your subs in. It cannot be that hard to fix that.

    gorillaSig.jpg
  • ANTVGM64ANTVGM64 Registered User regular
It is a pre-season thing. It's to cross-train your players. It automatically puts in whomever your '2' is at every given depth chart position. Since your kicker is your backup punter, and your punter is your backup kicker, and my daughter is my sister, it kind of works itself out that way.

  • Eat it You Nasty Pig.Eat it You Nasty Pig. tell homeland security 'we are the bomb'Registered User regular
madden does that on kickoffs if your punter's kick power is higher. Some actual nfl teams do it too.

it also does it in the preseason cause it's retarded

Yeah that all makes sense but I'd like to not play an entire pre-season where after the 1st quarter the opposing team can only get off 15 yard punts.
