Yeah, the intro was amazing, to be honest it was very jarring to go from seeing what looked like it was going to be a fully, fantastic looking 2d affair to the 3d models. I'm sure you guys will do an awesome job, but I, and possibly other people here would love to see gameplay elements and/or many many cutscenes that involve that style of animation and presentation. In terms of overall style though, looking fantastic so far, I'm loving the whole 'Undercover PI' theme and the general feel of the game so far.
Care to divulge a little bit of information on the game mechanics you will be using? I'm sure a game thought up and created by two guys wo love games to death will have awesome game mechanics, but I'd love to hear what you have in store for us to give us an enjoyable gameplay experience. I'm not just talking 'RPG esqe combat' or something, what cool gameplay mechaincs have you got planned for us? I'm really into games design and love working out how to make fun and rewarding gameplay expereinces and would love to hear the ideas you guys have.
Hey guys, I just wanted to hopefully clarify some of the stuff in that trailer.
First of all, we probably should not have dropped that trailer just yet. Our 3D stuff just isn’t ready.
Okay, with that said. I’m glad we can all pretty much agree the 2D intro is cool. It shows off the detective agency that Gabe and Tycho work at and gives some clues about the world. I like it.
The decision to add the 3D stuff was made at the last minute. We were afraid people might think the entire game was 2D. We put the 3D stuff in there to show that we intend to create a 3D game. It was just way too soon to show that stuff. There are a lot of effects we have planned like cell shading that just aren’t in yet. There’s still a ton of work to do in order to really define the look of the game.
Honestly the feedback we’re getting here is super valuable so I appreciate that. I can also assure you that I would never allow the game to ship if I didn’t think it looked cool. I’m with you guys. The 3D stuff we have to show now is not up to par. I also know that the people have working on it are good people and they can do this. We’ll get it there.
that response has more than normal maturity. you are handling the internet masses incredibly well. thank you.
Indeed. This is very encouraging to hear.

Gabe it is very nice of you to drop in here and clear things up for everyone. As fans of PA and more importantly members of the PA community we really want this game to be all that it can be.
Some of the video shows some wrecked houses and MASSIVE footprints in the ground.
This, combined with all the Fruit Fuckers, points towards a confrontation with FF'er Prime.
Also, knowing that this is merely a trailer, I still think it looks pretty good.

I have no idea why you considered a post pointlessly and unhumorously taking a cheap shot at the people paying for the forum on which are posting to have been worth cross posting.
When I saw the 2-D cutscene, it evoked memories of the rarely seen "Tracer Bullet" character that Calvin used to take on in Calvin & Hobbes. I think the pulp detective approach is perfect. I can't wait.

Me?
The models DO look like muppets, and Mike and Jerry ARE known for looking a lot like beaker and bunsen. Don't make me dig up that photoshopped pic of them... And last I checked they have a sense of humor.

I think its way too early to say one thing or another on the game with just this trailer. All we know is that its about PA, will be in 3D, may contain fruit fucking, and may or may not involve shooting/punching.
Not much opinions to make until actual gameplay is shown.
I was really impressed with the 2d part of the trailer, reminded me of the good old lucasart adventure game days. I'm really hoping this is at least partially an adventure game. I feel it could be almost comparable to monkey island, and thats saying a lot since curse of monkey island is one my favorite games if not my favorite.
Can't say im that impressed with 3d, but i realize its an early build and all the nice stuff probably isn't in yet.
The big problem with this project is that we're seeing the PA dudes in a different medium than before, and they're obviously not going to look the same way. We've been viewing the antics of Gabe and Tycho for years in the same way - in the form of several two-dimensional stills. We've seen in the first part of the trailer that these stills can be put into motion and remain attractive. Any kind of three-dimensional adaptation will probably look pretty wonky to us, because two-dimensional characters are hard as hell to put into 3-D. This is also why I don't buy figurines very often.
For another example of wonky 3-D adaptation, I'm going to steal the above post's example and mention Monkey Island. I found the 3-D adaptation to be pretty damn weird looking.
Bitch, bitch, bitch! I didn't see anything I didn't like in that trailer. Ya the 3D models look a little "meh" but I doubt it would drag the game down any.

Except there's been a perfectly good 3d models of them in the obey the tube mod. (Has that been (understandably though) cease and desisted out of existence?)

The comment might have been more like "we're console gamers as well as pc gamers and we realize our fans are console gamers too, so we'd like to bring it to consoles, but we're just announcing it for the PC right now." or something.
It's been awhile, but I'm pretty sure they said something akin to that.

Wasn´t it something like first at PC with episodic content and than several episodes put together for consoles?
That said I think we are overlooking something really important here. What happened to Gabe´s old japanese dude avatar?

They're most likely not using those models for this, though. I never said that all 3D adaptations of things that were originally 2-D were weird looking, just that it's hard as shit to do it right. This is also why I said that it will *probably* look wonky, not definitely.

Then why do they look like muppets? It's like a completely different style and it looks weird because it's not the style of Penny Arcade. It's not that the models are bad or low poly or anything like that, it's just what I'm seeing is a completely different art style being employed. That's why it looks so jarring to me, anyways.

Uh, how the fuck would you do them in 3D without them looking like that? I mean, Tycho's head is a fucking cylander, there's no way around that.

So I'll be able to play this on my PC? Because my only new system is the DS.

And, is this gonna be an XBLA game or a regular game?
The 3D models of Gabe and Tycho make them look like fucking muppets.
However it is kindof fitting given the real life duo's resemblance to Beaker and Bunsen.

You know it's funny, where I live, to "dig" means, literally, to take a shit. Slang is fun sometimes.

IIRC, Gabe and Tycho said they'd be releasing it on all major platforms at PAX.

Yes, exactly.
Also, I changed my avatar/sig theme. I feel pretty.
Yeah.
My point.
