Theme Parks: They're Like Expensive Playgrounds

This thread is all about those expensive little places called theme parks, they're full of magic and wonder and expensive food.

Disneyland:

ibqb1seuqsLTji.jpg

The house that Walt built, it was the first theme park in the world and pioneered the hub and landmark system that most parks continue to use. It was also the first place to ride many famous rides such as the Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain. It has a sister park known as California Adventure which had a shaky start but is doing well with mostly thanks to the amazing water/light show "World of Color."

Disney World

iESrzVXd9WWPl.jpg

Not finished until after Walt's death, Disney World still remains the biggest Theme Park in the world. Currently consisting of four parks, it contains most of the rides form Disneyland along with many new rides and locations. The amount of laws changed to get it built are staggering, including the fact that Disney could build a Nuclear Power Plant if they wanted. Walt had big plans for it, having plans for a entire city called Epcot. After his death the board decided that idea was kind of crazy.

Disneyland Paris (aka EuroDisney

i6IB7fskRwcvG.jpg

A massive failure when it first opened, Disneyland Paris has managed to get more even footing in the recent months. It's mostly a copy of Disneyland with some Hollywood Studios thrown in for good measure.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFpSrXJWITY

Universal Studios

universal_studios_limo_orange_county_2.jpg

Universal is mostly based on movie properties, rides like Back to the Future, King Kong and Jaws made the park a cool place to be. Sadly all of those are closed now. But Harry Potter world is super cool and Islands of Adventure has some neat rides if you like rollercoasters. It's also got Halloween Horror Nights which cool I guess.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L_vgW7jW0M

There are other parks but they're mostly just roller coasters and shit.

Edit: Romanian reminded me I forgot this.

Sea World

San-Diego-Sea-World.jpg

Sea World is a nice mix of super cool aquarium and a theme park. The main attraction is the famous Shamu show, it also has some crazy coasters too.

    Theme parks are pretty great.

Theme park guests, on the other hand, are a pox upon the land.

(Also, the lack of SeaWorld in this OP is staggering.)

I loved Sea World so much as a kid

But the last time I went, I just got depressed thinking about just how small their tanks are

It kinda put me in an off mood for the weekend

    I love roller coasters.

The best one I've ridden recently was the Intimidator 305 at King's Dominion

    Fixed it just for you.

Also I just want it to be known that Haunted Mansion is the best ride off all time.
Harry Potter is probably technically a better ride, but I don't have a poster of that in my room.

I used to like theme parks as a kid, but it's been ages since I ever wanted to visit one.

I am petrified of heights, so roller coasters are mostly out of the question.

Being around large crowds of people can, over time, leave me mentally exhausted, so that's a bit touchy.

And having worked at Knott's Berry Farm, I know exactly how much bullshit goes into the games.

That doesn't really leave much to enjoy, so.... yeah.

I did make myself go on supreme scream once, though. It was exhilarating.

Unfortunately I couldn't wear my glasses, so I didn't really get to enjoy the view.

    Things I learned at PAX:

Mike and Jerry (Khoo and others, I presume as well) have been propositioned for a Penny Arcade theme park.

    Yes, Fruit Fucker was involved.

Yes, the story was even better if you went to Khoo & A this year.

I was so scared of the Haunted Mansion when I was a kid, but now I just marvel at the technology of it and how it's still affective with minimal changes.

Fun fact, my first ride on Shei'Kra involved me crying on the whole way up.

It is, quite possibly, the most humiliating ride photo I have ever had to endure.

It didn't (and still doesn't) help that my parents bought the photo.

I never went on coasters as a kid. As of now, the biggest coaster I've been on is the wooden one at Balboa Park in San Diego. Not big, shook the hell out of me, but I liked it. Now I kind of want to try bigger ones but I am petrified of any upside down portions because I have no idea what to expect. And yet, I hunger ...

Also, I think my major issue is the drops. The thought of that initial drop scares the fuck out of me. So badly in fact that the only two rides I didn't go on at Disneyland were California Screamin' (the steel coaster) and
fucking Splash Mountain. Yeah, I pansied out on goddamn Splash Mountain

I used to be terrified of rollercoasters but now I'm a burgeoning afficianado (although I haven't had many chances to make it to a lot of parks).

The last time I went to Cedar Point my cousins and I managed to ride every single coaster other than the kiddie ones we weren't allowed on. By the end of the day I was pretty wiped out from all them Gs.

oh man roller coasters. I used to be terrified of them, until my dad started giving me bribes to actually ride ones like the Ghoster Coaster in Wonderland (Toronto). Then I'd cry until I got cash money and man up for the ride.

I started actually enjoying coasters with the Comet in Lake George, and the super awesome yeti one at Disney World. I rode that one like 4 times in a row last time I was there. When you start going backwards, oh man, the adrenaline rush is fantastic.

I'm super afraid of heights so the going up part of rollercoasters is the terrifying part to me.

Once I start going down it's all cool.

Exception to this: Top Thrill Dragster.

Related anecdote: the last time I rode TTD, when we were first in line they had to stop the ride because a train at the exit platform wouldn't release the restraints, a mechanic had to come fix it. So I'm standing there for like 15 minutes after being in line for 45 minutes, the tension and anxiety building. Then when I actually get INTO the train, the person in the seat in front of me had banged their knee or something and bled on the seat, so I had to wait another 10 minutes literally sitting in the train waiting for my turn. The anxiety of waiting to go was immensely worse than the actual 17 seconds of exhilirating terror.

Went to Universal Studios Japan a few months back. Jaws and Jurassic Park were great. From watching youtube all the rides seem identical to their american counterparts. The backdraft show was awesome also. Kind of sad to hear a lot of the attractions have been retired in the american parks.
