Alien Syndrome [Wii]

A while ago, I stumbled upon the Rogue Galaxy preview on IGN, and was amazed that I had never heard of such a fantastic game before. That's why I created a thread for it, because I thought it should be shared.

The newest accidental stumbling, revealing a game that I think will be absolutely bitchin'?

Alien Syndrome

alien-syndrome-20070316052731921.jpg

The story so far:
IGN wrote:
Alien Syndrome unfolds thousands of years into the future as humankind is regularly finding and terraforming distant planets so that they may become inhabitable. Somewhere out in the darkness, the Seti-Alpha 5 Terraforming Station has gone quiet. Despite repeated attempts to communicate with the facility, Earth Command receives no response. And that's where the seasoned Harding comes in. Only after the soldier arrives on site does she discover that the age-old Alien Syndrome is behind the mystery, and she takes it upon herself to rid the galaxy of the enemy once and for all.

alien-syndrome-20070316053410106.jpg

Some extracts from IGN's preview:
IGN wrote:
There are several differences between this new and improved sequel and its aged predecessor, the first of which is that the franchise is no longer restricted to the action genre. Rather, the game branches out into the realm of the RPG, enabling players the option to upgrade Harding's abilities as she runs-and-guns her way through alien-infested interiors and exteriors.
IGN wrote:
And finally, the new build features a four-player cooperative mode, as opposed to a two-player one.
IGN wrote:
Sure, it's packed full of traditional top-down shooter mechanics, but it's also got a meaty single-player mode. There are 15 diverse levels that range from the insides of infested ships to factories and more, and each presents individual side-quests, too. There are some 100 different enemies, five major bosses and 15 sub-bosses scattered throughout those many levels.
IGN wrote:
Shooter fans will be happy to learn that the Wii remote is used to direct the gun of the soldier as she blazes through the various stages. Players simply point in the direction they want her to shoot, tap the A or B button the device, and she will quickly gun down her opponents.
IGN wrote:
SEGA indicated that it is currently concentrated on upping the graphic finesse for the project, which doesn't ship until May.

I'm interested to see how good they manage to make this game. The original, and the remake that Sega put out on the classics collection, were both awesome.

This game was... dismaying at first, because it is a PSP port. Let's hope that little tidbit about "concentrating on upping the graphic finesse" actually means something, and not just "let's throw in some light bloom and call it a day."

But I really look forward to a good top down shooter in which you point with the wiimote.

    Okay then...

This does look like it has potential, but I'm not going to be buying it if there isn't a significant graphical improvement. Not that I really care about the graphics that much, I'm just sick of the wii getting badly thrown together ports of already existing last-generation games.

Agreed. It looks neat, but it also looks a lot like the X-Men Legends games to me. I'd like to get the next gen I've paid for.

alien syndrome was fucking awesome. I didn't even know it was an arcade game until the mid 90's.... I played the hell out of it on my Sega Master System.

The PS2 upgrade was the second best game on the collection (2nd only to Fantasy Zone). I can't wait for this sequel.

Seeing as it's got a bitchin' contrl scheme and 4 player co-op, I'm really not that bothered with it being a PSP port. They could keep the graphics at that level, and I wouldn't mind, especially given that it's a run and gun top down game, and you're not really going to be focused on the graphics all that much.

Yeah, at least it is on the good hands, as Lawrence "Larry" Holland* works as producer for the project.

I feel the same way, I got this payed off.

I have to ask, were you, well, proficient at it on the Sega Master System? I don't know how the hell you could could play that game successfully in later levels.

I hope this runs at 60FPS on the Wii.

*sigh* those screenshots are not doing that game justice i think.

it bothers me when a developer releases half assed screen-caps because then everyone is always "Zomg, that game looks like petrified buffalo crap!!"

put some time and effort into your game and then set out to get PR. otherwise you end up with negative feelings associated with your product and brand.

The way they describe the gameplay, with you pointing at enemies and having your character shoot them, sound remarkably similar to Global Defense.

Where are the other SMS fans on this forum who can attest to how much of a compliment that is?

Why not? They sent those screenshots out as PR for the PSP game. then they got reused when they announced the Wii version, with the disclaimer that they were upping the graphics.

    Seems damn valid to me.

I'm not a graphics whole, but I hope that when this sort of port is done, it's done well enough to make a respectable console game.

With that said, Alien Syndrome may be a port from another system, but the type of gameplay lends itself well to the Wii controls. So in this instance, I would definitely go for this game, assuming the gameplay is solid.

Thought I'd bump this thread for the new weapon info and screenshots available over at IGN. Screens look...about the same. But the weapons. Oh, the weapons. Nanobot storm fire and forget self targeting rifle? Fuck yes!

I'm getting a distinct Diablo-esq dungeon crawler + multiple weapons + waggle + aliens feel from this game. I just hope there's goodies to collect.

Aiming has always been annoying in 3rd-person detached-camera games (for me at least). Dual-analog only works if you have robotron-like complete top-down. Otherwise there's a slight disconnect between the direction you're moving the other thumbstick in, and the interpreted direction your player shoots in (relative to the camera, and the angle of view). Cutting it down to direct pointing actually sounds pretty good.

    We'll get back there someday.

I had some questions from a few folks about the ol' Syndrome and how some things in game work.

Loot. Yes there's a ton of random loot drops. Tons. There is a huge amount of armors in the game for starters, those get broken up into the basic 5 parts; head, torso, arms, legs, feet. You can mix and match those however you want. Then there's the weapons which each have unique + and - stats. Everything you pick up is different. There are even rare and super rare drops from specific Alien mobs. Dare you unlock the secrets of the Mootant!?

Another thing that came up was leveling / proficiencies. As you level up your stats, you'll gain power accordingly but there are also the proficiency points. It's here you can add to the 4 resist types. Alien Syndrome has 4 types: Fire, Radiation, Electricity and Infection. Not only can you increase your resistance to these (up your fire resist and that Flame Scourgecreeper isn't going to hurt much) but also, this ties into the weapons that you get and their proficiency as well. Of course, if you try to take out an electricity alien with an energy weapon, you may find yourself having a harder time than usual. All in all, there is a balance as you play through the game. As you level, you'll be able to spend points and skills in order to best address the situation you're in.

I'm bumping this for an update from the developer's blog on 1up. I was excited for this game before. Now I discover it has Diablo-style random loot generating, skill points and proficencies? Oh, fuck yes! I'm sure it's not as in depth as Diablo's system, but it still has me pretty pumped.

My love of 2D (perspective and literal) coupled with this games control scheme, with a sprinkle of SEGA magic makes me really rather interested in this game.

I suspect if it is good - it will become, like excite truck, an arcade classic ignored as shovel ware.

Sega fans are used to classic games getting ignored. It's fucking criminal that no one knew what SDI/Global Defense is.

RPG elements and Loot are a sega tradition. Back before the Genesis became popular, almost EVERY sega game had those features. They'd take a standard genre, like shmup, or platformer, then add RPG elements and shops and gold, and we'd wind up with some of the greatest games no one has ever played, like Fantasy Zone and Wonderboy III.

Needless to say, I'm 100% confident that these additions will be awesome.

I can beat the entire game without dying once, or using the shop once. I honned my trigger finger on that game.

That game is the reason why I love the Sega Classics Collection on the PS2, because it adds 4 new levels which, unlike fantasy zone II: The Tears of Opa Opa (which was a great game in it's own), felt like honest to god fantasy zone levels.
