Building a new computer

So my computer has decided to have horrible timing and die on me. As in the power button does nothing, obvious suspects of there being a problem with the power cord or the power strip have been ruled out. I don't care what the problem is as the computer was ancient and I don't feel spending money to fix it is a good choice at this point. All I care about is being able to get some data off the hard drives, which shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I had been planning on my husband and I building new computers in a few months as his is ancient as well, but it looks like that time table has been moved up. What we want are some really good gaming computers. The budget I'd like to keep to is about $1000 for each of them, though that can be a bit negotiable. Oh and I should say we already have all of the peripherals we need for now: monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, all that, so the budget doesn't have to factor those in.

What I don't know is well, how to do any of this. I haven't built my own computer before, but now is as good a time as any. Are there specific parts I need to pick out first? Such as motherboard, case, etc? Places that are easy for me to buy from are best buy, fry's, amazon, and newegg. I've got Amazon prime so there's always that sweet free two day shipping. It looks like the closest micro center is two hours away.

So what I need is some help. Recourse such as guides, tips from you (the fellow computer builder), anything to help point me in the right direction would be awesome.
