At the beginning of the LeChuck Crisis, as it would later be known, Mêlée Island found itself wracked by paranoia. Every pirate suspected every other pirate, dozens of insult sword fights broke out, and generally the chaos was overwhelming. The debate settled on two pirates Typhus733 and stever777. Finally, the pirates were persuaded by Typhus argument of "Woof, rarr roof woof. Bark woof arr arrf roof roof woof." and decided to spray stever777 aka a Monkey Island Cannibal with root beer and then keelhauled him, just to be safe.
Elsewhere on the island, Guybrush Threepwood had asked about how to become a Mighty Pirate and was directed to three Important Looking Pirates in the SCUMM Bar. They told him he needed to accomplish impressive feats of swordplay, thievery, and treasure hunting to be considered a real pirate. For the trial of thievery, he had to steal a particular idol from the Governor's Mansion. Unfortunately for romanqwerty he was caught between the vicious band of piranha poodles and a menacing group of ghost pirates. His death was far too grisly to relate here.
After the vicious attacks on young Threepwood, the pirates decided to conduct a census and make sure everyone else was accounted for. Everyone was, except for a somewhat mysterious stranger named SeGaTai. As best as the pirates could tell he had set out on a voyage and never came back. Where he got the ship from was a secondary and lesser mystery, as none were missing from the harbor. Much later on, it was determined that SeGaTai was in fact a Ghost Pirate in disguise.

So you're saying that you and stever were cannibal buddies. I suppose that would confirm you, but I have some reservations about being under the command of a cannibal. I know you won't intentionally kill villagers, but I'm worried you won't give us a proper burial at sea when we die.

If he's mafia, the mafia would probably be inclined to let the village create their own counterwagon to save him and do their best to not to look like they're trying to save him. If he's village, then they don't care at all.
* SegaTai, our only known mafia at this point, made his vote very late. It was made when Stever was already known to be winning the vote, and it was a simple throwaway vote.
* Kime actually was in the lead early in the day before Typhus overtook him.
