It's SPACE HULK, for PC, Mac and iOS, son.

OP updated March 1st, 2013!

You can read the in-depth reveal here courtesy of Rock Paper Shotgun: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/12/10/space-hulk-space-hulk-space-hulk-space-hulk/
Rock Paper Shotgun throws down some exclusive screens and an interview with the devs: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/03/01/space-hulk-preview/

shulk1s.jpg

Larger versions of the screens available in the RPS article. Some choice quotes from the devs:
"If you have in your head the boardgame as you play that, and XCOM, and mix those two together. That’s the game experience you can expect from Space Hulk."

"We’re trying to make it as cinematic and creepy and claustrophobic as possible."

"Our vision is that we essentially want to keep the claustrophobic atmosphere, you’re up against millions of Genestealers potentially, you’re the underdog. You’re going to lose this game three out of four times, just as in the boardgame."

"I think the screenshots speak for themselves. We are making a PC game, and we are doing a downscaled port for iOS.

"[When RPS asks for a Release Date] It’s not going to happen on this side of Summer. And it’s not going to be a Christmas release. Hmm!"

"We have signed a deal with Steam directly already. No Greenlight, no middlemen publishers."
-Blood Angel terminator squad
-Fearsome Genestealers with challenging AI
-Thematic 3d environment
-Single player campaign based on the "Sin of Damnation" hulk
-New coop multiplayer levels against the Genestealer AI
-Multiplayer head-to-head recreating the board game experience against a friend
-Cross platform multiplayer between PC, Mac and iOS
-Level editor with ability to share creations
-Game expansions in the future as DLC

The game is being developed by Full Control who is well known for...uh...being located in Denmark. Soon to be well-known for motherf'in SPACE HULK.

Anyway, let's talk about how awesome SPACE HULK is. Anyone still got their original board games lying around? I gotta go dig one up!

I got the most recent edition, which is beautiful. But I don't get to play it nearly often enough. Perhaps this will change that.

Space Hulk is balls hard. Any mission that wasn't "Hold this position and kill anything that runs at you." was "Move to this position while the fucking Genestealers come out the goddamn walls to kill your squad.". If this game removes things like this I will be sorely disappointed.

I don't know if I'd enjoy playing the game against AI though, as most of the fun is taking turns freaking out as THEY'RE COMING OUTTA THE GODDAMNED WALLS and being the one coming out of said freaking walls.

    The Emperor Protects.

Always wanted to be a Guardsmen in that kind of situation. However short the experience might would prove to be.

Rereading Salvation's Reach by Dan Abnett, and the setting is on a hulk. Wish this were on Xbox!

So is this going to be a digital version of the board game?

    Because...oh my stars.

I love space hulk. Anyone else play the original pc space hulk game? That shit was boss for an 11 year old.

Everyone has to buy two copies of this so we can get a video game version of Necromunda and/or GorkaMorka.

I loved the melee combat, one slip up and you're dead.

I would love a Fallout New Vegas style Necromonda game.

Or a Dragon Age style inquisitor game.

And no, not Dragon Age III: Inquisitor. I mean an actual dialogue wheel spinnin', smile-girl romancin', heretic smiting Ordo Xenos game.

Ordo Xenos: the anti alien inquisitor who never actually hunt aliens. Good times!

No one ever seems to realize that, before war, everyone's primary concern is fashion.

Those three hundred iron skulls don't get sewn onto that long coat by wishing, ya know.

Everyone, from the Undead Emperor to the lowliest dakkaboy has at least a 300 Embroidery skill.

This . . . this is good news!

I've been playing the board game ever since it first came out--even judged linked multi-map tournaments at Gen Con. I have the old video game on PC and Playstation, and the free indy version on PC from 2-3 years ago (can't remember the name of it, but it was Space Hulk in everything but name) was a lot of fun.

This though . . . if they follow through on all of the promised game modes, this sounds like a boatload of pure awesome.

I never really got into the Warhammer universe, but I played a ton of Vengeance of the Blood Angels on the PS1 and I loved it. Maneuvering your awkwardly huge Terminators through a Hulk while an extremely fast and powerful enemy comes at you from all sides was great.

Color me excited. Extra points if they reuse the awkwardly disjointed dialogue system.

40K is the campest universe and it's glorious how games workshop never cracks sly at how stupidly OTT it is.
To be fair, it's toned down a notch from the utterly ridiculous 2000AD comics (Nemesis the Warlock et al) that they based it on.

Oh sure, but what little I've seen of those comics seems to suggest that the creators are willing to admit they're creating something completely camp and over the top.

Games Workshop presents it's universe with such sincerity it's kind of endearing. Like that day dreamer in class who would tell you of his crazy worlds.

Man, I remember this way back when it came out. It was actually my first ever exposure to the Warhammer franchise. For a long time I thought the genestealers were the 'Space Hulks,' (hulk being another word for monster to my mind, based on the comics featuring an incredible one). It was several years later before I stumbled across a Games Workshop in a mall and discovered that 'hey, they made a board game out of it!'

The fact it's really Grin Dark is 40K's biggest secret, it's a bit like Muse or Queen in that regard.

Have to see if I can get some pictures of my brother's room, we did it up like a Spacehulk when he was away on a school choir trip - came back to find the walls painted black and gunmetal, air vents made from slatted cupboard doors and completed with the built in wardrobe and door panelled up with card and foam to be airlock doors and bulkheads.

Secretly disappointed it's not a FPS though, never got to play the older versions but they sounded pretty great. Plus I've got the actual game and no iPad

The first one was good, very difficult and had a ton of character. I thought the sequel was pretty bad, although the animation of fighting a Genestealer in hand-to-hand was pretty sweet.

Yeah, it's based off the amazing boardgame. Trust me, I shelled out $100 for this boardgame and am very happy with it, that tells you how good it is. I am very excited for a digital version. The ability to make custom maps is awesome.

I wonder if you will be able to toggle on old edition rules or old variant or extra rules. That would be amazing. With that the ability for people to create custom campaigns for people to play through would be amazing. I bet some real creative folk out there could make some awesome branching campaigns for people to play through.

all I remember from playing this on the amiga was dying over and over again and never really understand what I was doing wrong. The box-art was terribly misleading, it didn't show men in armour made of paper hiding in a corner getting eaten

I loved Space Hulk. It was my second Games Workshop board game (the first being Blood Bowl). Man that PC game was exceptionally hard. I think my favorite board game of that type was still Advanced Space Crusade though.

GW actually cracks wise about their ridiculous settings all the time in their novels. Commisar Ciaphas Cain is a comedy series, fer chrissakes.

I am reading the CCC books, and they are lots of fun. The first book is him against genestealers (or rather, him against the Imperial Guard brass, who are sending him against genestealers, instead of letting him hang around HQ drinking tea and banging the local maidens).

Anyway, I played a little of the original Space Hulk, and it was ridicu-hard. The remake for the PS2 was not as good.

I desperately want to see a Necromunda game where you actually maintain a whole squad of scavengers, upgrading their skills and gear over the course of a campaign of missions. If you wanted, you could take your team against other players. It would need to hit the sweet spot somewhere between Icewind Dale and Fallout.
