The first part is actually kinda correct. Usually you kill the monsters that defend the other person, then take that person's mana/source of their power. At least traditionally.
Now with the revisionist bits planeswalkers (which is what you are, really) are much less Gods but still really powerful in general, and fight for whatever reasons rather than the clash of Gods over power sources.
