GOTY 2012 Poll: Nominations needed
Posts
I immediately checked for Frog Fractions.
Everywhere I've seen that game listed including the Playstation Store had it's title as Papo & Yo it might be called Papi y Yo elsewhere but for the sake of simplicity I think we should just use it's english title
XBL, Steam & Tribes: elmartino333
I have barely even scratched the surface of my christmas games, so even with a week it will be hard to make a good faith effort at actually choosing which ones to vote for
Second this.
1000 Amps (PC, Mac)
Miasmata (PC)
La Mulana (PC, Wii*) came out in North America for the first time this year.
And do mods/total conversions count? Because, if so, I'd like to nominate Day Z (PC) Actually, never mind; since it's alpha, it probably shouldn't be nominated yet anyway.
Edit: Wait no, I checked and you did actually do the original when it came out, my bad.
But consider, say, Fall of the Samurai. It's an expansion of Shogun 2, but you don't have to own Shogun 2 in order to play it. I'd argue that should be included this year on that basis (while Rise of the Samurai, an earlier expansion, required the base game and should not).
Note: of the above games, I've only played Gods and Kings, just choosing various examples.
But mcc's the final arbiter when it comes to these things
hah ya.... we're having a slight problem with the front page. You need to go to the forums directly which can be found at http://www.thearcadians.net/forum/
Unstoppable Gorg (PC) was this year, though I don't know if it would make anyone's list.
Black Mesa (PC)? Technically a mod and technically not finished, but still one of the better things I played this year.
Don't Starve (PC)? Technically still in beta even though it's available for general purchase.
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
Double Dragon Neon (360, PS3)
Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2 (PS3)
NeverDead (360, PS3)
Carrier Command: Gaea Mission
Salvation Prophecy
Gratuitous Tank Battles
Hard Reset
Intrusion 2
AVSEQ
Cargo Commander
Escape Goat
Gentrieve 2
Towns
Hack, Slash, Loot
Pineapple Smash Crew
Qasir Al-Wasat: A Night In-Between
Super Amazing Wagon Adventure
Dino Run SE
Talisman Prologue
The Journey Down
After going through some of the games I have on Steam and Desura it turned out to be more than a couple. If I discover anything else I'll be back. These are all PC games, some may be available on other platfroms.
Hard Reset came out towards the end of 2011. I only know this since it was part of the cheevo hunt in the 2011 Steam Winter Sale.
Huh. It released on Steam exclusively, and the store page says July 12 2012. I bet that's for the Extended Edition, so yeah probably doesn't count.
Nice catch.
Let's say extend nominations to a full week? I put this thread up up tuesday night so let's take it to Tuesday evening of next week. That will give me time to loop in TIG and 360a too. I'll update the first post to reflect this.
FF14: ARR
Sounds great to me. Maybe even keep voting up for two weeks? Depending entirely on whether you can do it, of course.
Edit: Black Knight Sword is on PSN as well, btw.
I am making the same expression as your avatar right now.
But yeah, it should be on there I guess.
Isn't it still technically in Alpha? So does that count?
No, it's 1.0. Or so the makers claim. You may be thinking of Day Z, which War Z blatantly ripped off.
Artemis (PC, was that released this year or last?)
Knights of Pen & Paper (iOS)
Mixer: Kestrel1 | Twitch: KestrelTV
I get so confused with all this "Z" stuff, so I'm just avoiding most of it until a clear winner presents itself. Sorry for the confusion!
I don't play any of them either, but the whole War Z mess was so fascinating. Like a slow motion trainwreck. The short version is that War Z released with a version that many of the alpha players claimed was not any different from the alpha at all; the game was still plagued with horrible, game-crippling bugs (for example, you take fall damage from running down a gentle slope). It cost at least $15 to buy, and also had a microtransaction model grafted on to where you could buy weapons and items for your character; you lose these items if your character dies, which makes this not a winning transaction (I say "at least $15" because they also had packages that included a certain amount of in-game credit). Scummier still, many of the features that were described in the Steam listing simply didn't exist. After the various gaming sites called them on this, they edited the Steam description to remove most, but not all, of the missing features, all the while the project lead gave the old "I'm sorry if you misread" non-apology. Around this time, they also pushed through an update that didn't fix any of the bugs or hacks that had been found, but did up the respawn timer to 4 hours, and added a microtransaction to respawn immediately. Valve got so much negative feedback from the game that they ended up pulling it from Steam and offering refunds to people who had purchased it; unfortunately, the folks who bought it directly from the publisher weren't so lucky.
The really funny bit is that the project lead was Sergey Titov, who was also credited as the lead designer of the infamous Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing. He now denies that he was the lead on Big Rigs, and claims he just developed the engine.

I also noticed that these games have erroneous platforms, suggested corrections are listed here:
This game is listed twice, I'd suggest removing the first one:
There are also a few cases where 'Win' is used and 'PC' would be more consistent.
Really glad to see you doing this again!
edit: oh I guess you're right, just 360. Odd. Why not port that to the PC like the original? Oh well.
Yeah, Spelunky needs to make the list. It's not a port so much as a remake. Or a sequel.
I'm not sure if the comparison is apt. Cave Story+ was a graphical/audio enhancement with new difficulty levels, bonus modes (Boss Rush, character reskin, etc) and little new dialog. The gameplay and levels were pretty close to identical.
