No word on if this is true or any implications it has for the new Shadowrun, but can't say I'm surprised with how unimpressive the screens have been looking and the bizarre decision to turn the franchise into a run of the mill FPS.
Shadowrun will be shipping soon. It's been a long three years for many on the team. I'm certain that some folks will be leaving us to do other things after we ship. That's normal, and it's healthy, too. As for our contingent staff here, they're just that - contingent. They have a maximum amount of time they can work here before taking a mandatory break. Many of them are complete star performers, but when the job's done, they move on, and the job's almost done.
The personal attacks on team members are inappropriate. We're locking this thread accordingly.

I highly doubt this guy's claims. He's probably just a disgruntled fired employee (if even that) and wants to sabotage the sales of Shadowrun.
Also, yes. Shadowrun is a run of the mill FPS with magical abilities and trolls. God, I've played that one way too many times.
Who hasn't?
EDIT for hambone: </sarcasm>
Actually, I'm really interested in this as a FPS, despite the wanton rape of a beloved franchise. They have hacking in it right? They should just package up dystopia and ship that.
The guy making these claims sounds really fucking disgruntled. Like he dropped his toast on the floor, butter side down, and now he is going to shit in everyone's breakfast.

Out of curiosity, do you see Mario Kart or Raving Rabbids as wanton rape of beloved franchises because they didn't adhere to the source gameplay/materials? I see it as essentially the same thing, and I still own all my first edition SR books and a good deal of the old novels.
And might as well get some good out of this thread anyway. The NDA is now gone, anyone have questions about the game proper? I've been beta testing it for about a month now.

Oh, cool. Well, you're a smart dude so I'm glad I can ask you the one question I really have about the game--I'm a big fan of multiplayer FPS games, and I'm a big fan of all things Shadowrun. Assuming I don't care about any "mismanagement of the franchise", will I like the game?
Does it offer anything new from a strategy standpoint? It honestly does look like anouther FPS deathmatch/CTF game with some cool new abilitys. But in the end it appears to bring very little as far as new gameplay to the table. I haven't read up on it all that much so please correct me if I'm wrong. I love FPSs, but am not interested in anouther Quake clone.

I'm pretty sure Rayman and Mario have never adhered to any kind of canon. Don't be ridiculous.
Oh that dumb bastard. I got my start in the industry doing contact work at Microsoft (quite a few years ago now). And he just completely sabotaged his entire fucking career.
Yes, being an orange badge sucks. You as much or more work for less money. Even in the better groups they treat you like a barely-tolerated house pet. But you know that going in and you can leave (on good terms) if it gets too bad. Its an early first step towards a decent career.

In some respects it has a very rock paper scissor feel as far as the powers and tech go.
One example. The dwarves have huge essence, the biggest magic pool in the game, but at the same time, they regenerate the slowest (regen faster by syphoning essence from others, trees of life, strangle, etc). So rather than being efficient casters, since the tech takes up essence pips (thereby decreasing your potential for casting spells), they're actually much better suited to be teched up.
Trolls are a very very damned hearty race. They can take a ton of damage, they can carry the heavier weapons like the minigun without much of a speed decrease, and their skin toughens as they get hit. So they're great for melee. They're one of the only races that can bust out a kitana efficiently and bust you up with it. The thing is, their toughened skin is dependant on essence. You get an anti magic field, or sick your dwarf on them, they're heightened defense is going to drop fast and you're going to be able to take them down quicker.
Elves are the mainstay of the game, and the race the newbs pick. They're fast, they have the second highest essence in the game, and their health regens. So people think they can snag an AK, pick up some tech and spells, and play the toe to toe game with everyone else. Thing is, they are more fragile, have less health, and seem to take more damage. So even though they regen, they're not great for toe to toe gunfights, and newbs don't get that :P They make excellent support. Strangle the cap points or the flag spawn, summon a minion to guard the flag or cap point or tree of life, have them cast the tree, or when at a loss, have them snipe.
Humans, as always, are the middle of the road race. They make good casters, they make good gunners. They can go toe to toe with a troll if you're smart about it, and with the money bonus they get, they're the only race that can start with a support spell like res, as well as a decent weapon like the AK.

Nope, and Shadowrun has changed its canon several times over its different versions.
And while Rayman and Mario haven't adhered to any kind of canon, they're platformers first and foremost, and while, settingwise, arena fighters (Rayman Arena), mini game collections (Raving Rabbids), kart racers, etc don't make a lot of sence in that respect, but at the same time can still be fun games in their own right despite the iffy connection to the characters and background that they're using.
The NDA is now gone, anyone have questions about the game proper? I've been beta testing it for about a month now.

Signs point to yes? Read my race rundown up top, and see what that does for you. They patched the game recently to put in all the powers, tech and guns. Still only two maps, but I can give a better rundown as far as the features of the game if you want. Just ask.
I think the game sounds fun, don't get me wrong, but doesn't the idea of trolls, elves, and dwarves running around with chainguns and AK's make anyone else chuckle a bit?
EDIT: I've invented a new term: "double suspension of disbelief"
Hmm. Well, it really depends on what this guys job was. I thought Microsoft tends to hire devs on a temp basis and then fire them when the project is done so they don't have to pay benefits. Then they can come back like 4-6 months later or something like that.
I bet that's what happened and the guys all pissed about it so he's spreading rumors. I doubt MS would allow FASA to close.

I'm still not convinced this isn't a standard shooter where you can teleport and fly. However instead of classes they substituted "races," Trolls as heavy soldiers, Elves as scouts, ect.
I've enjoyed the hell out of it. I honestly do believe that the powers and racial attributes really add something to what could have very easily ended up a run of the mill first person shooter. People, once you learn what the hell you're doing, are actually encouraged to take up roles that essentially they can build themselves. Team work is extremely important, and I have yet to find a throwaway race, power, or tech. Some are used more than others, yes, but in the right hands, you can tear shit up as any race. The only thing that would really make me hesitant is if they drop the ball on map count.
It's a lot of fun, and challenging enough that I honestly think it'll scare off the screaming kiddies, or at least make them a bit less frequent than a lot of other games, and they have everything balanced to the point that there is no uber build that is just going to rip everyone apart.
I'm still not convinced this isn't a standard shooter where you can teleport and fly. However instead of classes they substituted "races," Trolls as heavy soldiers, Elves as scouts, ect.
And to you, there's nothing I can say. Give it a rent and make up your own mind. There have also been statements made in the beta tester forum that there SHOULD be an online demo released prior to the release of the actual game itself (which is rumored to be sometime in June).
To be clear, I'm pretty positive this game is going to be great. The thing I was complaining about is that it strays pretty significantly from what Shadowrun fans would expect from a new game. I compare it to the way Fallout fans react to Fallout Tactics.
The difference here is that Shadowrun: FPS might actually be pretty rad on its own, regardless of whether or not it's the right game for the IP.

How many FPS games do you play that include teleportation and flying magic? O_o
I'm totally going teleport + katana as soon as I get my hands on this.
OK. While I do hate what they did with the Shadowrun setting, I won't let that get in the way of a good game.
Again, demo it. It's worth at least trying out. If you don't like it, at least you didn't waste any money
Wish I could find the quote now. One of the developers has already talked about some of the ideas he had for a single player Shadowrun game. The scope and size he talked about while mentioning the Matrix just left me all kinds of... well, in need of new pants.

I think they made some good points in the 1up Yours podcast. Basically it was "make the shooter now, get the fans and money, renew interest in the IP, make the RPG later."

See, that makes me feel much better about this whole thing.

I just hope it sells enough to convince the corporate pocketbook holders at MS that it's worth the backing. I'm really worried about the viability of an online only shooter like this.
Some other quick observations. Single player bot matches. The ability to fill your remaining empty slots in a match with bots, who in turn drop whenever someone enters your game. Variable skill levels for the bots (I haven't hosted a game as of yet, so I'm not sure if each individual bot's difficulty level is customizable, or if it's by team), and the ability to run a dedicated server. Little details I know, but I figure someone would be interested.

Both teleportation and flying have been done in first person shooters dozens of times. Hell, Duke Nukem and Rise of the Triad have had flying power-ups for more than a decade.
I'm not saying it won't be fun, let's not kid ourselves: there's nothing really new here.

But, yeah. Very sarcastic. Saying that Shadowrun is a run of the mill FPS is like saying that Burnout is a run of the mill racing game.

Very counter-strikey with magic and whatnot.
And no, there's no hacking.

It's a quirky, fun shooter.
With orcs and shit.

Aoi. Is the game fun? Be honest, now.
I bet that's what happened and the guys all pissed about it so he's spreading rumors. I doubt MS would allow FASA to close.
The hilarity adds to the fun.

Was always 360/PC.

I disagree, but to each their own.
