So when I tried to restart the game after crash it would open in the background but no window would show up, even on alt tab. So I reboot my computer and restart the game and it wants me to play the tutorial suddenly. So I'm reinstalling the game.

Every time I played it I would just try to recreate my hometown, just with less murder.
I don't know what's going on in this game but now I'm pumping out all the oil and then I'm going to replace my oil wells with a nuclear plant???

I should have read this thread before I bought this. Completely unplayable. Reinstalled twice, took a solid 1.5 hours each time, can't do shit even though my specs are all fine. Way to shit on my memories, EA. I bought the disk though so maybe the store will take it back

so, apart from EA not knowing the difference between a preload and downloading an installer
and apart from the server-side savegames, which I think is a genuinely stupid way of doing things (persistent online connection to play is one thing, but at least let us play our cities on ANY available server and not have them tied to just one server please)
I played a bit of this last night and really enjoyed it; it's funny how fast the city develops! granted I was in sandbox mode just to get the hang of controls and basics and stuff and it definitely feels like easymode, but I was having a lot of fun just jumping between three cities and whatnot and just setting up basic infrastructure between them
EDIT: I created a private region in an American server (Oceanic was full, plus with opposing timezones I reckon it'd be easier to get access to an American one during Aussie peak time) and claimed all 3 cities in that region so I could jump between them fairly quickly
but I have a feeling weekends will be rougher with regards to server access; we'll have to see how that goes
might be SimCity during weekday nights and GW2 during weekends depending on server availability on the weekend
alternately, let me transfer my cities to available servers as necessary thank you

further to this, my very honest review of SimCity is the following:
it really is a very good game that I can easily see myself wanting to play extensively
however it is severely limited not in performance, but customer service
regardless of how you feel about DRM shit, it's hard to disagree that EA utterly and completely mismanaged the handling of their customer service side of things
there are lots of people out there yelling "get over it, bugs at launch are to be expected etc etc" and while I normally shrug at early adopters, I must disagree with that yelling in this case
bugs are launch to be "expected" if you are playing a primarily multiplayer franchise, where multiplayer is the main draw - MMOs, online FPS games, etc - bugs can be expected, but not necessarily forgiven
but if the game can be reasonably enjoyed solo for the first little while, then bugs are not to be "expected" - I really feel that, with this game at least, EA created problems where there didn't need to be problems
SimCity has historically been a single-player franchise, and while it's okay for that to change direction based on how devs want to go with their game, part of the popularity of this gametype is to be able to have control over a city or cities and work to solve problems
forcing an MMO model on top of that can be termed innovative, sure, but also completely fucking optional
by forcing players into a persistent online world, you are removing some of the single-player enjoyment from just playing a game that YOU can enjoy without worrying about how OTHER people are choosing to enjoy their game
yes, you can choose to play privately and without anyone else, that's cool - but then you punish people for wanting to do this by locking access to their cities with server limits!
to some extent I can accept the persistent internet connection for DRM purposes - it's annoying, but I understand it... what I don't understand is the need to force games to be played server-side and introduce a host of problems that don't need to be there
why not just issue invites to friends to join your game that is played solo until you choose to connect to the servers and invite friends?!
it is a good game, no doubt about it, and very fun when you can access it; I'm sure server queues will free up and become less of a problem as time goes on, but what if your city was created at launch alongside a bunch of other cities on the same server and you bump into the same queue over and over again as a result, because your city can't be transferred to another server because some illogical limitation?!
so, really, it is the customer service side of things that completely and utterly lets the game down, and I feel like no matter how good a game it is, putting a design in place that actively prevents people from playing it when they want to play it is like shooting yourself in the foot
Goose! That's me, honeyShow me the way home, honeyRegistered Userregular
So is the only option to try and reconnect when the game tells you that it couldn't connect to the server to close the game and re-open it? Because holy shit is that lame.

i was kinda bummed about no mega cities but then it sounds like running multiple cities in a region is basically the same thing
i'm not really buying the line that running 2 or more cities adds some sort of unmanageable stress or complication that isn't present in running one mega city
mega region

having run three cities in early stages, it's actually kinda nice to know that, okay, I don't have to worry about ground pollution in this city cuz I built a massive sewage treatment plant over in the other city that can handle it, so this city can just buy sewage capacity off them for cheap
which also means I can put down land-value-increasing stuff without worrying about it being cancelled out by pollutants
alternately, I don't have to worry about finding the best place to build a water tower in this city because my other city near the coast has a water pump built right by the ocean which is yanking in tons of water
and my third city is awesome for generating wind power because it gets the most wind speed out of all the cities so I can actually power all my cities with just a wind power plant (with a couple of extra turbines) at this stage and decrease costs
so I would say it is definitely more manageable than having one megacity, for sure

my Mayor's mansion is currently right on the beach in a low-pollutant city (with all our garbage and sewage going to other cities) that has some light industry that is placed so that my house is not downwind from it, and a wind power plant on the other side of the highway in the far corner of the city
it's basically the Hamptons but with shittier shopping

I will say one thing strictly about gameplay: maybe I haven't found it yet because I'm an idiot, but holy shit I wish this game has an undo button. The number of times I've had to bulldoze a dumb-shaped road that I didn't like has been a bit frustrating.

It really seems like the game wants you to play 2-4 cities at a time to get any satisfaction. Stuff like university taking up 1/5 of your real estate and my coal/oil town having so much power that my neighbors can buy all they need
Me and friends have been playing on 16 city maps and are each claiming 1 city in each blob which is fun for sending very specific help to each other

It is astoundingly retarded that you have to wait in server queues to play a single player game

Honestly, I know it sucks but just wait a bit. Diablo 3 had the same kind of launch. It is why I hate these online only games because you cant actually play the game for the first few weeks it is out. But after that, most of these problems get ironed out.
Of course I have all sorts of other issues with the game that maybe only an expansion pack will save.
Increase the city size(double?), add in suburban sprawl in the weird dead zone between cities(even if it's purely cosmetic), and release on not origin and you have a sale EA

i kinda like the idea of working with a smaller city as long as it can support the population number of a big ass city. It's not physical size that matters to me it's those fucking bars and numbers and bells and whistles. as long as i can build a city up to 2 million people or something and then set a tornado loose on the whole mess. who cares if they give me a little box to fit it in, that's just the gameplay to me right there. make a huge city, population wise, work within those borders.
that being said the mac release isn't for another month? :c

And ended up remaining pretty crappy well after the launch! And now the console version won't have online-only, because Blizzard figured out that the concept is stupid!

Do we have a thing where people build cities together?

Well this is kind of shit.
I just get to look at a city the game built for me and do nothing.
At least it looks pretty, I guess.
