A "thing" is putting it lightly. And it works just like anything else you might collect. Come on now.
Anyone get the Merch pin during the holiday sale? I did. I can't wait to get more at PAX.

I wasn't being coy, I honestly have no clue what it's about. I've heard it's a "thing" but I had never seen or heard of it before the PA posts about it.
im thinking of making a sash to go with my lookouts cosplay to start collecting the pins on. im trusting PA not to make all the pins cost a ton. if thats the case i will probably not bother playing along.

Mike got the idea for this quite a while ago and hinted at it for a long time before posting and making it official. its based on the thing they do at disney, thats all i know. that and it totally hits me in my collector heart.
damn you Penny Arcade! Knowing my weakness!!
To be clear, this is not related to the forumer buttoneering in any way. The pins are Official Penny Arcade Merchandise. Nobody here can control the cost of any official PA merch item.
You can typically trade more than once with the same cast member. As long as you aren't hogging all their time or interfering with others who want to trade. All the pins on the cast member lanyards aren't special edition pins that you can't get anywhere else. Typically, it is filled with random ones that you can buy from anywhere. There is usually a "mystery pin" on the reverse side of the lanyard that no one can see (it might be common, it might be special). Sometimes you can get lucky and there will be some rare ones that either cast members or managers put on from their own personal stash.
Pins at Disney range from like $5-6 for a regular single pin to $15 for limited edition/special occasion pins. Too bad I can't get a huge discount at Penny Arcade like I can for pins at Disney. Heh.

You should totally check out Buttoneering as well, since it's a community based collecting game. This is starting the sixth year doing it (first time at PAX East!) and it's been a lot of fun. I am so passionate about it because I love pin trading at Disney and during the Olympics.
That being said, I don't think Pinny Arcade is necessarily stepping on the toes of Buttoneering because if it's anything like Disney trading, it's only for trading "official" pins, purchasable from PA, not for community made pins. It should still be a ton of fun, and with a much lower barrier to entry than Buttoneering, it'll likely be quite popular. There's actually been almost no info about it (including to us Enforcers), so I look forward to seeing how they're going to do it!

Khoo chimed in with a little extra info, but basically it's "more info in March".

Ohhh this makes me very excited. Collecting pins sounds like a very fun hobby.

i will take your word on it and start prepping my lookouts style merit badge sash.
of course. it will be part of my Lookouts Cosplay so there will be many pictures. although idk how much stuff will be on it. it may take a few Paxes to collect enough stuff.
that is a good idea. I have my 2012 scarf but i want the sash to go with my cosplay so i will probably just buy an actual sash or make one. so far the ones i've found are far too small. probably because they are meant for children. :P

Why not? It's pins. Everyone likes pins.
If they have blind box sets at PAX I will lose my mind.
Anyone have a good way to display pins in general? Like, around the house that is. I know there are pin boxes out there.

I do not generally like pins, actually. They put holes in clothing, or require specific clothing (Scarf, sash) that I am willing to sacrifice to holes.
On top of that, it just doesn't seem the spirit of the whole thing... Have fun with fellow gamers.. or burn time trying to get pins.
I dunno. I like the pins. I don't like that I have to give up actual gaming to go "earn" them by standing in line, or by constantly harassing people for them.
I'm going to Disneyland in two weeks, maybe I'll change my mind from that experience. But generally... I don't think I like this. I'll withhold judgement until I actually experience it at East, but I don't see any logical reason that I'd like it.
It isn't like I don't already have my cup runneth over at PAX- there's infinite things for me to do, and adding an arbitrary random thing doesn't really seem to help with that.

I'd gladly love every last one of those either for free, or for a reasonable fee- I just don't want to burn time that could be used for gaming with awesome PAX people getting them. There's few situations that I can find a game of any kind any time for anything and love it. Or just talk about games to anyone I walk into.
I don't hate the things. I hate the effort spent during what should be a vacation for me- Money is cheap. Time is not.

Collecting pins is the same as collecting anything else. There is usually common stuff that you can buy, some blind boxes to take a chance on, and then some that are only available on/at certain events. You aren't going to be walking around, waiting in a line for them. That isn't what pins are all about.
The fact that Mike grasped this whole concept from his trip to Disney just means that they are more than likely doing it in a similar fashion.
And I don't understand "generally" not liking pins because they put holes in your clothes. You stated yourself that people typically get special things to put them on. Lanyards are what is typically used unless you get a pin book to put them in.
There is no effort in collecting or trading pins besides what you put into it via money. Penny Arcade has seemingly taken a good concept from Disney and applied it to their own brand.
